Please me find a wedding guest dress

Lovely ladies, I need your help!

I have two weddings coming up this summer and want to buy one dress to wear to both. I'm keen to look stunning, obvs, but also to avoid the boring "paint-by-numbers" wedding guest styles that are all I seem to be able to find.

The second wedding, in particular, is very formal (think cathedral and - I imagine - strong 4 weddings and a funeral vibes). I desperately don't want to be in Laura Ashely-type floral number which could double as sofa upholstery. However, many of the dresses out there do seem to be channelling that look.

In my mind I want to be fashion-forward and slightly edgy. However, in reality I'm a 40 year old mother of two who doesn't actually care about fashion and could look ridiculous if I try too hard.

A bit about me - I'm a size 12, although sometimes manage to get into size 10 on a good day/vanity-sized label. Pear-shaped, but with a reasonably flat belly. I don't like my upper arms and never usually show them, but I'm working on getting over that hang up, so sleeveless isn't necessarily a deal breaker. I find tea dresses usually work well for me, but I have approximately 62 in my wardrobe and would appreciate a nudge into a pastures new.

I like Saloni (only the less Boden-esque prints) and did find a dress I liked in the sale, but the quality was not good enough even for the reduced price so I returned it.

I like the idea of Rixo, but am always turned off by the frilly flounces which they attach to perfectly nice dresses.

I have looked at Zadig and Voltaire, but I fear I am not the body type to carry off the dresses.

BA&SH is a little beachy for the occasion.

Budget is £300-£400.

Any suggestions either for dresses, or places to seek dresses, would be very much appreciated. Otherwise I'll have to dust off a floral tea dress, like the last 4 weddings I went to!

Would you wear this: https://www.freepeople.com/uk/shop/celiab-nammu-dress? I personally think it’s amazing! I know others will disagree.
And have you looked at Athropologie? I love their slightly quirky twists on things

@Tiptopteapot Ohhh, I think it might be a little too demanding for me, but thank you for the suggestion. Anthropologie is a good shout though. I haven't looked there for ages!

@NeedForSpeed I think I do like the ruffle/duvet one!

A lot of these dresses cross the line into evening wear for me. Neither wedding is "black tie" so a full-length silky dress would look a bit OTT at 2pm outside a cathedral.

Although maybe that's a "me" problem. I've noticed more and more people wearing evening dress to weddings, rather than day wear with an added bit of glam.

The other half will be in a morning suit, so don't want to look like we're going to two different parties!

Only the green one would fit with evening black tie to me.

I think I was raised with super smart wedding and funeral experiences - I'm always shocked at how casual other people seem to dress for formal church weddings and funerals!

If your partner is in full tails / morning dress, you can't really go overdressed unless it's sequined IMO. It's also a day to evening event, so I wouldn't overthink whether a dress is a day dress or evening dress. You could dress down slightly by day with a jacket or blazer over any dress and have the dress only for the party element?

BusyFrizzyLizzie · 10/06/2025 14:56

I love this, but unfortunately one of the weddings has requested no black.

The other one is a little too saccherine. If only the Ted Baker dress was in blue or green!

Have you tried Reformation? Lots of florals there but they seem a lot fresher and more modern than the upholstery look you want to avoid.

Londonmummy66 · 10/06/2025 16:07

This is quite elegant and should tick both boxes -sorry MN won't let me post the link for some reason but it is the Eleanor dress by RIXO

The only issue with sleeveless dresses is that it wouldn't usually be correct to have bare shoulders in a cathedral unless you are part of the bridal party and finding a jacket to cover your shoulders with a halter neck can be tricky. I'd probably pair this with a cream Chanel style jacket for the cathedral and then party with it off.

Kevan Jon dresses look fabulous on ….not sure of your colouring but this green is flattering IMO ….

Described as a bridesmaid dress but I think it could work for a guest!

This silk Rixo dress is gorgeous, comes in 3 prints and is frill free. I think the red flower print would be beautiful for a catherdrl wedding

im 5ft 1 tall and orderered the petite one in the black and gold and it was the perfect ankle length maxi and a very flattering fit on my narrow shoulders and big boobs . Sadly it was a bit big on the hips so I had to return it. I loved it but at that price it has to be perfect.

I know you said no floral but the above looks really nice on and is decent fabric quality.

It also has matching girl's one if you have a DD you wish to torture by matching! Grin
