Please me find a wedding guest dress

Lovely ladies, I need your help!

I have two weddings coming up this summer and want to buy one dress to wear to both. I'm keen to look stunning, obvs, but also to avoid the boring "paint-by-numbers" wedding guest styles that are all I seem to be able to find.

The second wedding, in particular, is very formal (think cathedral and - I imagine - strong 4 weddings and a funeral vibes). I desperately don't want to be in Laura Ashely-type floral number which could double as sofa upholstery. However, many of the dresses out there do seem to be channelling that look.

In my mind I want to be fashion-forward and slightly edgy. However, in reality I'm a 40 year old mother of two who doesn't actually care about fashion and could look ridiculous if I try too hard.

A bit about me - I'm a size 12, although sometimes manage to get into size 10 on a good day/vanity-sized label. Pear-shaped, but with a reasonably flat belly. I don't like my upper arms and never usually show them, but I'm working on getting over that hang up, so sleeveless isn't necessarily a deal breaker. I find tea dresses usually work well for me, but I have approximately 62 in my wardrobe and would appreciate a nudge into a pastures new.

I like Saloni (only the less Boden-esque prints) and did find a dress I liked in the sale, but the quality was not good enough even for the reduced price so I returned it.

I like the idea of Rixo, but am always turned off by the frilly flounces which they attach to perfectly nice dresses.

I have looked at Zadig and Voltaire, but I fear I am not the body type to carry off the dresses.

BA&SH is a little beachy for the occasion.

Budget is £300-£400.

Any suggestions either for dresses, or places to seek dresses, would be very much appreciated. Otherwise I'll have to dust off a floral tea dress, like the last 4 weddings I went to!

I bought a Dea Kudibal dress for a wedding this year. It is a beautiful silk print. They do different lengths. Not overly fitted but the fabric drapes beautifully and they have generous 3/4 sleeves. You could easily add a belt to all their styles.
The fabric has a slight sheen to it but not satin and it does look expensive.
I chose it because I can easily wear it with boots and thick tights in the winter with a longline cardigan.
It’s also machine washable.
It has a beige/neutral colour in the pattern so I’m matching it with a neutral hat and have bought feathers in the various other colours to decorate the hat. Also picked up a pair of block heals suede Russell & Bromley sling backs from Vinted for £20 ( only worn once so in excellent condition.
The dress was about £400 but I’m hoping no one else is wearing it.
The wedding is in August so hope I don’t need another layer. I’ll probably buy a shawl if it looks like it’s going to be cool.

@MiddleAgedDread I do like that colour but I think it might make me look a little green. Thank you!
@ConstanceMartensCat and @Twinstudy I'll check out Reformation, thanks!
@Londonmummy66 that is a lovely dress, thanks. You're right about the shoulders, I'd need something over the top.
@Ebidebslim As with the yellow, I fear it would make me look a bit sickly, but I do love the striking shape. Will explore further!
@xPenelopePitstop I have one almost exactly like that, although in coral 🙂
@Sunholidays I wear a lot of Me + Em for work, so would like to branch out for play. Will check out self-portrait, although my immediate thought is that I'm not cool enough to carry off the lace. I worry I'd turn end up looking a bit like Lady Bracknell
@Namechangefordaughterevasion That is a gorgeous dress, but the cut is my go-to. However, if my courage fails I will stick to what I know. Thank you!
@Howilivenow2 I LOVE the first one (and I've bought it!). I don't know if I will wear to either/both of the weddings - the shoulder issue as identified - but I have fallen for it and it's a great deal. Thank you!!
@TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams Afraid neither of those are quite me, but thanks for the suggestions.
@ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan I've never rented before, but it's a really good idea. I'll take another look.
@LateForMyOwnFuneral I'm not sure it's for me, but thanks for the suggestion. I actually have two DDs - 3 and 4 - who would be DELIGHTED if we all went in matching clothes. 😂
@Angrymum22 I'm not sure that they're quite what I'm looking for for the wedding, but there are some lovely dresses there which I could wear for work. This is getting to be an expensive post on MN!
@Wiltingasparagusfern Ah, Sandro! How had I forgotten them! That dress is gorgeous, thank you, will take a look. And I'd actually seen the Kooples dress but moved on because I have so many in that style.

Thank you so much to everyone. You've given me tonnes to think about (and spend money on...) Really appreciate it ladies!

Oh yay! It's a beautiful dress!

EllatrixB · 11/06/2025 13:14

I do like the print of the one @Howilivenow2 linked to. Love a halterneck too!

I think my wedding wear has slowly got a bit less formal over the years - think I'd struggle now for a properly formal cathedral wedding! Having said that it's not a bad problem to have 😁

Tiptopteapot · 10/06/2025 12:26

Would you wear this: https://www.freepeople.com/uk/shop/celiab-nammu-dress? I personally think it’s amazing! I know others will disagree.
And have you looked at Athropologie? I love their slightly quirky twists on things

OMG, even Anne of Green Gables would draw the line at those puffed sleeves! 😂

So I would alway buy a clasic A line/mermaid dress. More recently, I shopped from a local place called Emilia's dresses-they also make custom made and the prices are earthy.

The other option, if you do't mind, is go on Vinted in the Occasion dresses- they have an amazing selection and not even reach 100£ - I have bhought some incl cocktail dresses and I was never dissapointed.

Hydrangealover · 11/06/2025 22:29

Have you looked at Farm Rio? Also some great wedding guest dresses here from Peapod & Co. www.peapodandco.com/news/best-wedding-guest-dresses

mstifi · 12/06/2025 12:55

What about Hobbs or Joey Brown's?

JellyComb · 12/06/2025 17:46

You must have a look at Libelula dresses! The wedding-y ones are listed under Cocktail Dresses.

Everything has 50% off right now using the code at the top of the screen, as they are closing their shop. So a £400 silk dress for £200 etc.

Roksanda, but only at sale prices (and still a bit over!) https://www.net-a-porter.com/product/1647597340685225

Harrods have a 30% off sale too with some of the brands mentioned so worth checking there

On that budget for smart traditional weddings you could look at Shibumi. They aren't tied in to any particular trend but instead draw on ravishingly beautiful shantung and embroidered silks.
The body type you describe should be flattered by quite structured tailoring and half sleeves. Shibumi also make long jackets in the same fabrics which can be helpful in chilly cathedrals or outside.

Other options that would be over budget but lovely could be Sara Roka, Paule Vasseur, Favourbrook or Beulah. It might be worth looking for these on resale sites- I've picked up amazing pre-loved bargains that have typically been worn only once or twice.

If you haven't already done it, I would highly recommend getting you colours and style done. Wearing your wow colours and in the right style for you will give you the put together look you're going for. For me it was a game changer.

I love that Sandro dress. It's like Toast and Farm Rio had a baby, Toast the sober daddy and Farm Rio the party girl.

mrsCtheRed · 14/06/2025 19:16

I wore this for my Brother's wedding last year. Felt fabulous and had loads of compliments.
Also comes with the little jacket, if you did decide to cover your arms?
I got it from Hobbs, they have lots of gorgeous dresses, jumpsuits etc

Have you tried Cefinn - they have a sale now!

MPhilomena · 23/08/2025 16:22

Help :).... Im not one for dresses but going to wonderful family wedding next week and need a great dress with sleeves (cathoilic mass)... any ideas? Which shop to try?

Could you start your own thread, @MPhilomena. It’s incredibly annoying to find an old thread re-opened for no good reason.
