Is a sequin dress appropriate for a wedding guest?

Its midi in dark rust for an autumn wedding - simple shape, sleeveless and midi length.

Its a glam wedding of a young cool party couple - I am 48 and petite.

If so how would you style it - jacket / shoes - colour and material? It will be indoors - ceremony and reception in same venue.

Thats a wonderful suggestion - I hadnt thought of a different fabric top. I didnt necessarily want head to toe sequin but was not imaginative enough as you to think of alternative tops - also eases my concern that both together could be too much in the day time at least.

It would be much better with a different top (and not exposing your belly button).

bridgetreilly · 21/05/2025 17:04

I really don’t think you could wear that, no.

Headycloud · 21/05/2025 17:52

God so much pearl clutching 🙄I’m not sure the demographic responding but wow so much uptight responses

I love it! Got for it

notsureonthisone · 21/05/2025 18:19

That's a "look at me" sequinned, orange crop top and skirt. Go for it if that's the reaction you're looking for as a guest at a wedding. And I'm no pearl clutcher!

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2025 18:21

@Headycloud Glad you won’t be a guest at any wedding I might organise! Sequins and bare midriffs definitely not wanted. I suspect DDs friends and our friends would laugh at this outfit and think wtf!!

Sunbeam01 · 21/05/2025 18:40

I don't think sequins are appropriate for a wedding. I feel like guests should look nice and not try and upstage the bride

Well that was an unpleasant way of saying you don’t like it.

I have a close family memebers wedding this autumn and have got this to wear . My family member is a little bit "alternative" so ill be teaming it with my usual DM's and a leather jacket. The sequins in your choice are a bit much, i feel this does the sparkly without being too much sparkly, in a less in your face colour. The wedding im going to is very autumn vibed, with pumpkin & floral table decs (not carved!) and the orange/deep red/dark green colour scheme.

@puffinchuffin I love that dress! I had a similar one years ago - wish I'd kept it although I'm too old for it now! I wore mine with heels back then and still would but if DMs and leather jackets are your thing then I can see how they would work for you.

the bride is also wearing DM's and a leather jacket over her incredibe lace wedding dress so it works for that wedding and im happy with the thought of being comfy lol, but if they were more less alt then the dress could def be teamed with heals and a more formal jacket

This is incredibly gorgeous!! 😍😍😍

IsoldeWagner · 21/05/2025 20:47

I think an orange sequinned 2 piece with your middle on show would be quite the statement! However, if you have the physique, go for it!
(I'm confused that you think it's a rust dress, though!)

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 21/05/2025 22:06

I love it but don’t think it’s write for an autumn wedding. Summer yes.

MrsMitford3 · 21/05/2025 22:17

OMFG

Is this real??

No @ellimae this is not appropriate but I suspect you know that...

MumWifeOther · 21/05/2025 22:55

ellimae · 21/05/2025 11:49

No - its this one - actually a 2 piece. Dark grey is a good call. What style jacket would you wear?

www.neverfullydressed.com/products/orange-sequin-dorris-skirt

This is lovely! A blazer would work, they have some lovely brown ones at the moment

IsoldeWagner · 21/05/2025 23:01

Something in green or grey? Brown rarely looks good with that kind of bright orange, imo.

SlightlyJaded · 21/05/2025 23:12

Deffo just the bottom half. And I would team with chocolate satin or silk shirt - maybe something like this.----

SlightlyJaded · 21/05/2025 23:17

Thats a lovely fabric and cut which would complement the skirt well - but I am thinking maybe a more neutral shade eg cream might work better?

A sequin dress fine that two piece with an exposed midrif absolutely not

SlightlyJaded · 21/05/2025 23:42

@ellimae cream would work well too. But definitely something a little bit elegant to counter the spangly bottom half!

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2025 13:00

Also just because a younger couple you think are “glam and cool” (?) , you don’t have to try and be them. Be you. I don’t see glen as being clubbing sequins either. It’s much more subtle than that.

Absolutely this.

Made me snort in a most unladylike way Grin

It looks like something g Gwen Stefani would have worn when she first started out.

Not suitable for any wedding g at any time of the year.

if you’re on a low budget then this is more suitable

Ooh, now THAT is nice.

Elegant and stylish

CapaciousHag · 22/05/2025 02:16

No, a cream coloured top would not be better, @ellimae. It would be almost garish. Look again at the photos I shared above from the A/W 2025 collections - those autumnal colour combinations would soften the bright orange skirt. And I would hesitate to add anything in a shiny fabric; it would make the outfit rather loud. Very matt silk or wool would be gentler on the eye.
