Short wedding dress?

SugaredSweet · 15/05/2025 06:45

I'm getting married next year. It's a summer (hopefully!) wedding and is set in a woodland. The guests including us will be no more than 20 with a casual dinner after.

I have a son who will be 6 and is a fight risk (ASC) - I need to be able to move. I don't want to spend crazy money on a wedding dress. I don't want a big floofy dress. So I was thinking something more non traditional, but traditional enough that it will be bridal. Would you ever consider a short dress? I'm just not sure I could pull it off... I'm 5'8 and I'll hopefully be a size 12. Currently a large 14. I'll be 38 if that changes anything.

@Ruthietuthie love all those dresses. Definitely something to think about although I'm more a hourglass/pear figure so not sure they would sit well around my stomach/hips

@BlanklyMyDear am I being stupid but where is the rental section?

Oh, sorry - I wasn’t clear! I linked to the CB site so you could see their designs, but you’d have to find out which rental sites might have some available. Look through the Vogue list I posted earlier.

I am absolutely not a dress person - my mum made me a beautiful suit from ivory raw silk with a keyhole neckline. I loved it and with flowers in my hair and a bouquet it still looked very bridal!

Kiera Knightley wore a lovely wedding tea dress

Pollyminx3 · 15/05/2025 19:34

I wore a short dress 14yrs ago, I knew exactly what I wanted (not white, silver with rainbow petticoats, swing dress style with powermesh top so not straps or sleeves)
I used a dressmaker who designed exactly what I described and made it.
if you know what you want find similar things to try on and then you could get something made if there isn’t anything spot on.

I love this!!!

I wore short. I’m hourglass and would never normally go strapless but did. It was ivory, loads of sequins but a very simple shape. Great for dancing

Ooo thanks for all the suggestions. The two Self Portrait from NaP (particularly NaP4) look incredible and I think my husband to be would approve (not that he has too but you know what I mean hopefully!) @BlanklyMyDear

I had considered a slip and then a Lucy Can't Dance overlay but I just can't justify the cost.

I have seen these which I like:

I was about to post that River Island dress.

A friend of mine married in a beautiful lace wedding dress (below the knee) with a short veil. She looked stunning! Think 1950’s vintage with the shoes as well, it was the cutest wedding dress i had seen!

I'm not keen on sleeves as I think it will be too warm and I'll get annoyed But I would like straps as my body shape doesn't lend to strapless.

I'm also not a tea dress kinda person. I prefer shift dresses really, but I don't want to look like I'm wearing a sack!

I'd happily rent a dress. I would be concerned about my son getting something on me though. Budget is probably around £500 max. Ideally a couple hundred would better.

Have a look at flamingo boulevard on instagram, that’s the bridal shop I got my dress from, they have loads of short dresses, jump/playsuits and two pieces and all pretty modern

SugaredSweet · 15/05/2025 21:30

@Bohemond23 I keep coming back to that River Island dress. I might have to order and just see what it is like. I really fancy a pair of Esska shoes and feel they could match up quite nicely.

I like this one which has a nice sixties vibe:

Oh, me! My dress was short and sleeveless! It’s for sale on Vinted right now for £35

It was handmade from cream silk brocade, silk lined with built in bra, made for a pear-shape and it has pockets!

It’s strapless, but you could easily add spaghetti straps or a tailor could use a cream scarf to make wider ‘mini-sleeves’ like in some of the pics above

PM me if you want any pics of it on 😊

I’ve missed the editing window but just to say Millybridal looks like a scam website but if you like this I can look for something similar from a legit source.

Love short dresses! I wore a 60s style lace shift mini dress with 3/4 length sleeves, boat neck. I found it on eBay after lots of looking. It felt so totally me and I felt so amazing in it!

Lily Allen was married in a gorgeous short dress. Here’s an article about it:

Some gorgeous dresses. Hope your day goes well.
Is there anyone attending who could be “ on standby” for your son if he needs a break or doesn’t cope well on the day.
You could then relax a bit more and enjoy your day.

CanOfMangoTango · 16/05/2025 12:32

Definitely do a short dress.

I saw Lily Partridge (marathon runner) posted her wedding pics on insta a few weeks ago, she wore a sleeveless shift dress with some stunning Sophia Webster shoes.

If you need to run then her shoes probably won't work BUT I'm sure you could find something practical that's a showstopper for your feet.

@SugaredSweet I haven't read the whole thread (short on time!) but really recommend Dig For Victory, an indie label in Brighton. They made me a beautiful shorter tea-length dress for my wedding in 2019 - just sent them my measurements and picked out the features I'd like (length, lace sleeves, sweetheart neck, fabric, pockets! etc). Depends a bit on your budget but my dress was about £500, and it was totally bespoke and handmade - and they made it very quickly and posted it to me! 😊 Were really accommodating when I had a mad boob growth spurt (which I wasn't expecting in my mid-20s...!) and had to send it back to be altered for a small fee. They are very size inclusive (I was between 14-16 but they do any size basically because it's handmade) and the dress was amazing - really well made.

I had a short wedding dress, OP, and loved it! Was about mid calf length.I am only 4”11, so really didn’t want a big long train. I bought this dress off the rack for £200 (closing down sale!) and took it to a local dressmaker who altered it from having a 6 foot train to being this lovely calf length - and also meant my fab pink shoes were on show! 💖 Dress wasn’t heavy at all and soo easy to dance in. I’m half tempted to dye it a pale pink and keep it as a going out dress 🤣I reckon if i got it shortened further, I could get away with it. The dress maker even managed to make the veil out of excess material, so you could just buy a long dress you like and get it altered. All the best for your big day, you will look beautiful no matter your dress length! X
