Should I buy a classic LV Neverfull? Opinions please!

Hi MN
I have been gifted some money (£1K) from my husband to buy a bag. This is unusual for him as he isn't the gift giving type at all.
However I have taken him up on it and am now doing some research.
I need something quite big as need to carry medicines / have a large wallet / tablet etc etc.
I have always really fancied a LV Neverful (circa £1.4K)l...
My question is do they look tacky now? Will people think I'm carrying a fake? Is there something of a similar size by another designer that would look better? Classic colours work best for me I think, brown eyes etc.
I would like something I can use for years but it has to be quite a big tote chuck everything in type bag. I've currently got the coach equivalent but the leather (?) coating is coming off at the corners and only had it about 18 months...
Would like the LV Neverfull but don't want to regret the purchase!
Thanks everyone xx

If you've fancied it for a while, I'd go to a shop in person and try it on, see if you like how spacious it is etc. I also like the Mulberry Bayswater Tote, it's a very classic bag Mulberry | Bayswater Tote | Burgundy Small Classic Grain | Women,

Yes that one is beautiful... understated and classier! However there is just something about the never full... lols

Definitely go to a shop and try the Neverfull on, if you still love it then I'd go for it given you've wanted it for ages :)

gollyimholly · 14/05/2025 21:49

I find that if you've always been lusting after a particular bag you should just go for it. I feel like you've sort of answered your own question as PP suggested a bag with a similar shape but you still refer to the LV (and that's totally ok!) It just sounds like you really like it :)

I like bags like The Row's Margaux or Givenchy Antigona or Celine Phantom for big size bags. But maybe you might prefer something like the Goyard Saint Louis as it's another one in the same shape as the neverfull and has the iconic logo too.

Neverfull's are great as a weekend bag, holiday bag because they double as a beach/pool bag and sometimes a day out/shopping bag.

As an everyday tote obviously they hold a lot but the lack of closure is a security issue and the straps are very thin which can be uncomfortable if there's a lot in the bag.

I'm not saying don't buy one but go try one on first and try a few other totes also for comparison. It's a lot to spend and then not be totally happy with your choice.

PansyPottering · 14/05/2025 22:05

You like it, you’ve wanted it for ages, I think you should get it.

RunningJo · 14/05/2025 22:16

I wanted one for ages too, and got one.
I love it, the only downside is as pp said is the lack of closure. I find I use the inner bag to put my purse in, which is attached to the actual bag, but I’m very conscious when I use it that it would be easy for someone to put their hand in.
Mulberry bags are lovely & definitely worth considering too

User2446433 · 14/05/2025 22:26

Thanks everyone! I currently have the coach dupe of the neverfull and it's fine although would probably prefer a zip for security... I think I'm going to go for it!
Assume that LV never have sales :)
Is there a shop at bicester where you can try them out / get slightly cheaper ones does anyone know? x

cherrycola66 · 14/05/2025 22:39

I would go for it

Massivescreen · 14/05/2025 22:56

I lusted after one for a long time, then decided I would buy one, so went to try it, and I was surprised that the straps just seemed thinner and flimsier than I expected (I have a lot of longchamps which is my frame of reference with the straps), so I left it in the end because I thought it was a lot of money if I didn’t LOVE it. That’s just me though!
Go and try it and see if you like it and go for it if so!

The neverfull is a classic for a good reason; it is an unbeatable workhorse. LV canvas is much lighter than leather which is an advantage for a tote.
Have you looked on the LV website? Which model are you looking at? The classic monogram canvas comes with untreated leather trim which develops a patina over time but can get water stains easily. The damier ebene canvas is more carefree but some people find the straps uncomfortable.
You might consider the “inside out” neverfull which comes with an additional shoulder strap or LV has just launched a new version of their “mon monogram” service which allows you to personalise a mm size classic neverfull. As it’s a special gift from your husband that might be an idea.
I have the classic neverfull in the GM size which is a great travel bag. I don’t care if anyone thinks it’s tacky or a fake - I love it!
LV never discounts anything so don’t have an outlet in Bicester.

Thanks everyone I didn't know about the thin straps so will go into store before I buy thanks for the tip!

I’ve had mine for over 10 years. The straps are thin however it’s seen me through daily use, 2 babies and holidays. The straps are well made but they do take a bit of time to soften to be comfortable.
LV don’t have sales - sorry.

I absolutely love mine - the largest size. Very useful practical yet stylish badlg imo. I'd also consider very good pre loved. I buy from global luxury closet quite a bit. Excellent and absolutely trustworthy

olivelime · 15/05/2025 12:47

What a treat! It sounds like you've got your heart set on that one, so definitely try it in person. Maybe even try it with things in it (if allowed!) so you can feel how the straps feel with weight in it.

I'm a messy person so I could never spend that amount of money on a bag - I know I'd ruin it! On your specific questions:

My question is do they look tacky now? Will people think I'm carrying a fake?
I think that depends on the rest of your outfit. I know one woman who splashes out on big designer status symbol items - LV bag, range rover, you get the jist. But they're often paired with primark and shein outfits. I think that's a bit...odd. Maybe tacky. If feels like they're really reaching trying to make a statement with the designer logos but obviously don't care about real quality in general. If your wardrobe is generally smarter and more in keeping then I think LV is generally pretty timeless and classy.

And agree - who cares if people think it's fake? They'll be less likely to try and nab it!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 15/05/2025 13:00

My local department store stocks LV - and has 10% off for students. Can you find a student (&/or blue light discount holder), and a store offering a discount to get a little off the price?

BarneyOreilly · 15/05/2025 13:54

I’ve got a Neverfull, had it about 10 years know and it’s knackered inside but I still like it - I use it mainly as a holiday/ beach bag because you can get So.Much.In.It

gianfrancogorgonzola · 15/05/2025 14:07

I love mine. Largest size in the Damier Ebene, it’s an absolute work horse of a bag! Near daily use for five years and honestly looks like new. I use it on flights as a personal item too.

LadyDanburysHat · 15/05/2025 14:13

I've always wanted a Neverfull too. Should have bought one before I had kids and had spare money.

I do think they are a classic and you see so many people flying with them for a reason, they are really great travel bag as well as everyday.

GofE · 15/05/2025 15:12

I'd say go on and try lots on (although bare in mind a lot of the stores aren't stocking the canvas bags anymore, maybe call ahead).

I had the neverfull in mono, sold it and bought the Graceful hobo bag just to be different. I didn't dislike the neverfull (it's a useful size - i had MM - and i like the pouch it comes with) and always wonder if i might get another haha, i like the Empreinte leather particularly.

Only stocked in LV boutiques or Selfridges/Harrods unless 'pre-loved', and never part of any discounts sadly.

I wanted the LV Neverfull PM for years, and kept putting it off, but finally treated myself for my 30th, which back then cost £880. I am 40 next year and still use the bag every single day. I love it. You can draw the side in to give the bag more privacy, and there is a gold clasp on either side to hold the bag closed, so I don't find it an issue that it doesn't have a zip or anything. I have just treated myself to another one in the GM and the matching wallet. I have bought both bags inserts that have a drinks holder and extra pockets, which is a game changer. It protects the lining of the bag plus gives additional protection for loose items. The website I got them from was handbagangels
You can select the size for the bag and pick the color and how many additional pockets you want.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful.

To ask a stupid question... are the neverfulls made of leather or canvas?
I've just driven past someone carrying one... all the signs are conspiring towards buying one... lols. Absolutely love the monogram design x
