Fisherman sandals yes or no…

So am 50s and constantly fighting myself so as not to look frumpy and old 🤣what do we think of these. I did see them in white which might take some of the clomp factor away… I know some of you love the style of DMs and dresses but it’s just not me. I’m aiming for “old money French chic” - aiming for lol

There’s no link or picture ?

CluelessAboutBiology · 02/05/2025 20:30

No.

Teado · 02/05/2025 20:34

Although I’m not particularly big, I’ve got horrible wide size 7.5 pastie feet that spill out of sandals ….but I do like fisherman sandals on other people.

Photo would help as many won’t know what they are

No fisherman would wear sandals. Steel toe capped rigger boots or full waders only.

Why on earth are they called fisherman sandsls

Blahblahmama1 · 02/05/2025 20:37

Oui

LobeliaBaggins · 02/05/2025 20:37

I like them. But in tan, not white.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 02/05/2025 20:40

I have these. I love them, was wearing them today.

I like these. I don't believe age has anything to do with wearing them, but then I don't believe age has anything to do with most fashions.

fruitpastille · 02/05/2025 20:57

I've got the fitflop fisherman sandals. I bought them on a whim - too expensive really - but I've had a couple of compliments on them.

Supersimkin7 · 02/05/2025 20:59

Yep. But you need a bit of clomp to make them look moderne.

I imagine because fishermen (and their sandals) pre-date steel capped boots and waders by hundreds if not thousands of years...

Notshopping · 02/05/2025 21:07

I love them and I am still wearing mine from last year as they are really comfortable.

I bought a pair of Mary Janes to give a different look and they are agony.

TheRavenKingsDaughter · 02/05/2025 21:31

@VivIsBlonde why would anyone who doesn’t know what fishermen’s sandals are (and they’ve been around for a good few years) feel the need to advise the OP on their wearability?

I think they look great on other people (and the person’s age really is irrelevant here) but for myself there are other things I prefer. They seem both practical and stylish. And I’d say if they don’t work with your clothes - it may be the clothes that are somehow no longer of the moment. 😄

tillyandmilly · 02/05/2025 21:38

I have 3 pairs of fisherman’s sandals from Fitflop - I have size 9 wide fit - they are fabulous and stylish I love them ! Had lots of compliments- love those as well !

mejon · 02/05/2025 23:30

I have last year's version of these by Oliver Bonas in a sort of silvery/pewter colour. They're very light and extremely comfortable. I've also got them in an emerald green but haven't yet worn them. Fatface have similar ones. The Fitflop ones are lovely - I'd definitely get a pair if I was on the lookout for a new pair. I'm not so keen on the more 'dainty' versions - I had some from Clarks some years ago but they leather was so stiff they gave me awful blisters. https://www.oliverbonas.com/accessories/fisherman-black-strappy-leather-sandals-364203#selection.color=14

I have enough shoes 🤣… but I do love them … and am sorely tempted by the Oliver Bonas ones.

Jen579 · 03/05/2025 08:03

Sorry OP, I think they're really ugly. To me they look like something a Gladiator would wear in Roman times, they just look very manly.

MissJeanBrodiesmother · 03/05/2025 08:32

I really dislike them and I often prioritise comfort over prettiness in shoes. There is such a lot of choice in sandals so would not choose these ever.

TheChosenTwo · 03/05/2025 08:48

I saw a pair in sezane that were heeled that I liked but flat ones and almost all others have a touch of the BFG about them.

Hephebe · 03/05/2025 09:06

Generally I'm not a fan (I'm a bit sick of the DM ones you see absolutely everywhere) but a friend has a Me+Em version of the beige ones @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle linked to above, and they look really chic.

OP, I think if you're going for old money French chic but want fisherman's sandals, personally I'd go for a less clumpy example of the style.

Another alternative I something like the Arizona Birks - I've seen a fair few stylish French women in these.

Or you might like Ancient Greek? I quite like these: Black leather cross sandals

CiaoMeow · 03/05/2025 09:17

Wow! I just checked them out. I really like them!

Justkoko · 03/05/2025 09:19

I bought these in the Jan sales. Still not 100% sure so haven't even worn them yet 🙄. Don't want to wear them then realise they just aren't me.

Oh, image under review...it's the white stuff floral fisherman sandals in tan. I want timeless, not high fashion. So they'll last and not look dated in a year.
