Please help me find ‘nice tops’!

All I want is nice tops to wear with jeans, but I have searched and searched and I hate everything I’ve seen.

This is my list of things I need to avoid and my reasons why:

  1. Puff sleeves (broad shoulders)
  2. Cropped (long torso, c-section pouch, mum tum)
  3. Backless (51)
  4. Polyester (just because it’s foul, also sweaty)
  5. Cold shoulder (yuk)
  6. Sleeveless (51)
  7. Tunics (because of my long torso they make my legs look stunted)

I have lots of nice casual T-shirts, but I just want something a little bit fancier to wear with jeans when I go out for dinner etc. I have a couple of silk shirts, but I was hoping for something summery.

Please help!

Look in Mint Velvet, Wyse and Sezane for lovely tops for wearing to lunches and evenings out

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/04/2025 21:28

Thank you. I forgot about Wyse.

Baukjen?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/04/2025 21:51

What’s Baukjen sizing like?

A semi-sheer blouse? This one has metallic threads that are nice (I've seen it in person, which looks much nicer than the photo!) and the wrap means it can be tighter or looser depending how revealing you want to be on each occasion!

What’s wrong with sleeveless and open back at 51?

Allthesnowallthetime · 24/04/2025 21:55

Something like this?

I have quite a few blouses with statement collars that I wear with jeans. From Damson Madder, Whistles and H&M. Or a plain t-shirt and knitted structured waistcoat as an alternative.

Absolutely nothing if you feel confident. Sadly, I don’t. For some reason, perimenopause has knocked a lot of confidence out of me, and I’ve gone from loving clothes to finding getting dressed for a night out a real struggle.

I like the shape of that Zara one, but I get very sweaty in polyester.

I’m such a catch.

I am looking for the same and struggling as well. I have another bag of items to return to Next tomorrow :(

Quite generous. If you're between sizes, size down.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/04/2025 22:59

Right, I’ve ordered a few to try.

A couple from Baukjen (must learn to pronounce that), one from Jigsaw and weirdly some from Boden. They have 25% off at the moment, so I thought I’d take a punt on some of their plainer offerings.

Off to have a look at Mint Velvet now. Thank you all. Keep em coming!

Also think about a lightly sheer kaftan/robe type wrap or tie to put over a nice strappy top if you aren't confident about arms/back on display.

This looks cool but dressy and would skim a tum:

Buy Cath Kidston Pink Lily of the Valley 100% Cotton Wrap Blouse from the Next UK online shop

I like kettlewell for tops. They wash and hang well and are in good fabrics. And the range of colours is pleasing particularly this year when the shops are full of mustard, khaki, orange and red.

Britpopbaby · 25/04/2025 08:11

Easy to tuck in and is a little different from a simple white tee https://www.stories.com/en_gbp/clothing/tops/t-shirts/product.knot-detail-t-shirt-white.1266814001.html
