Please help me find ‘nice tops’!

All I want is nice tops to wear with jeans, but I have searched and searched and I hate everything I’ve seen.

This is my list of things I need to avoid and my reasons why:

  1. Puff sleeves (broad shoulders)
  2. Cropped (long torso, c-section pouch, mum tum)
  3. Backless (51)
  4. Polyester (just because it’s foul, also sweaty)
  5. Cold shoulder (yuk)
  6. Sleeveless (51)
  7. Tunics (because of my long torso they make my legs look stunted)

I have lots of nice casual T-shirts, but I just want something a little bit fancier to wear with jeans when I go out for dinner etc. I have a couple of silk shirts, but I was hoping for something summery.

Please help!

Has anybody got the Hush puff sleeved T-shirt? It looks like a nice ‘plain but elevated’ top, but their quality can be really poor so I’m not sure I want to risk £40 on a T-shirt.

Looking forward to your update, @BlueEyedBogWitch as I relate to your 7 deadly top sins so hard 🫣

I find Vinted really useful when you want to put lots of filters in like you do OP.

I just click “brand new with tags” and the algorithm soon picks up on what I like and sends suitable stuff into my feed.

I tried this on in H&M this morning. It’s light to wear and very pretty. Cotton and rayon so better than polyester. I didn’t buy it because it was wider than I like in a floaty top but it’s really nice for a cheap option: www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1281672004.html

Ok, Boden Nice Top 1.

It has puffed sleeves, which I’m not sure about, otherwise I quite like it.

Boden Nice Top 2.

I really like this one. Sleeves are a bit longer, which reduces the puff.

@Whattodowiththesewindows I do like those, and I’ve had similar from Great Plains, but the pleat at the front was such a sod to iron it ended up languishing at the bottom of my wardrobe.

I know my weaknesses, I’m afraid.

This one is a bit fussy for me, but I like the green one on you.

I think that’s where I’m leaning, too.

Lots of different designs in these too

I have a couple of these; I quite like them.

The only problem with the Sezanne shirts is you can't see them on completely as the models drape their hair all over the front of the shirts in all the pics. 😂

Are they ok for busty women? With a lot of shirts they either swamp my waist or gape at the bust (sometimes both!!)

BlueEyedBogWitch · 26/04/2025 18:51

I agree about the Sezanne models. The other problem is they’re all so impossibly gorgeous it’s hard to imagine what a normal human will look like in the clothes.

What’s wrong with sleeveless and open back at 51?

Edited

The OP doesn’t want them.

That’s lovely and very summery
Not overly keen on the green one

Whattodowiththesewindows · 27/04/2025 14:28

@BlueEyedBogWitch apparently ,according to reviews and another mn poster ,that uniqlo top doesn't need ironing .

This one looks lovely. The green one looks fine for casual, but I'm not loving the colour.

A semi-sheer blouse? This one has metallic threads that are nice (I've seen it in person, which looks much nicer than the photo!) and the wrap means it can be tighter or looser depending how revealing you want to be on each occasion!

This is polyester though, which OP doesn't want

At this time of year I like very fine linen mix jumpers and t shirts. Pure linen always hands like a dishrag on me but a linen knit seems okay.

i bought

https://www.zara.com/uk/en/fine-knit-sweater-p00506005.html

which is viscose mix and it is nice and very thin, they also had plain colours in store but the website is difficult to navigate.

I find that anything made with viscose doesn't tend to wash or last particularly well especially if thin, like this one from Zara. Anything like that ends up in a bin just after a couple of washes as it either shrinks, or looks so horrible and misshapen that it would not be possible to sell or donate. Avoid viscose like the plague

BitOutOfPractice · 27/04/2025 19:02

What temperature are you washing things on @Howmanyroses ? That’s not my experience at all. In fact I find the mn horror of some fabrics a bit mad / puzzling.

The temperature suggested on the label? So typically 30 degrees, but in my experience most viscose I got on the high street, so the likes of H&M, Zara etc ends up looking like a dishrag because it's so thin. If you can get higher quality viscose (like from Cos or Arket maybe) which is thicker you'd do much better, but you really need to be looking around as it's like a needle in a haystack. And believe me I am addicted to clothes :)
