Casual but stylish clothes for uk holiday next week

BasketballScoop · 16/04/2025 20:42

Im in a bit of a style rut clothes-wise as my weight’s been up and down a bit the last year, but its gotten to the point now where I’m desperately in need of some new stuff and am off on holiday next week and literally have nothing to wear 🙈 (I wear smart office stuff for work that’s not suitable for holidays, and the last time I bought non work clothes it was for a very hot sun holiday, so not suitable for uk April).

Im in and around a size 16, hourglass shape but have a large chest which sometimes restricts my choices. Love wrap tops, not a huge fan of jeans. Style wise I’d be more smart casual, though I want to also be comfy. I have a budget of around £210 and would like to get at least 3 nice outfits that I can possibly mix and match. Have many jackets and coats already, and a few cardis but not much else.

Would love some suggestions if anyone has seen any nice outfits recently, I seem to have lost my way with style so cannot see the wood for the trees at the moment.

Wide leg trousers, some plain cotton T-shirts in a couple of colours, mix with your jackets and cardigans.

Add some jewellery and a bag.

Thank you, this is exactly the type of suggestion I was looking for 👍 Funny how I couldn’t picture anything in my head that would suit me but can see it clearly now!

If you want a nice dress I love the Starlight dress from Nobody’s child. Either with sleeves or without. Always get compliments when wearing mine and looks great casual or smart.

I just bought a black ribbed sleeveless dress from M&S and wore it with a linen shirt, leather biker and my DMs. I felt uncharacteristically rather stylish!

summerlovingvibes · 16/04/2025 22:00

Jumping on here as could also do with ideas! I'm soooo unfashionable... @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie do you wear the shirt under or over the dress?

BasketballScoop · 16/04/2025 22:07

I’d forgotten about nobody’s child, will have a look now.

Love the idea of the ribbed dress, was it this one: https://www.marksandspencer.com/ie/cotton-rich-ribbed-crew-neck-midi-column-dress/p/clp60725220?istCompanyId=786af40a-2e84-4001-9ef1-c1fcb168fbf9&istFeedId=69dadbaa-735a-4779-811b-c707617c01a9&istItemId=qpmxxqrwt&istBid=t&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADANKJngqShgFq9obwVW2XDsnELw_&utm_source=259955&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_campaign=www.google.com&utm_term=0&utm_content=GenieShoppingCSS&custom1=Comparison+Shopping+Service+%28CSS%29&custom2=Genie+Shopping&sv1=affiliate&sv_campaign_id=259955&awc=4786_1744837617_a29ee0aeb43f732cc3e8f7cdfce7c66a&affwin&extid=af_aie_Comparison%20Shopping%20Service%20%28CSS%29_259955

I like that sleeveless knit dress as well. You could wear it with a cardigan or jumper for this time of year.

Try to stick to a fairly limited palette for your new choices. Choose 2 trousers in basic colours, 2 t-shirts in the same colours, (or black and white), then add cardigan or jumper that match with both. Add one printed top that goes with both bottoms. The black knit dress can be worn with anything.

Good luck and have fun on vacation.

Tearsricochet · 17/04/2025 00:01

I like the suggestion of wide leg trousers and t shirts - would you consider a casual shirt too? To wear on its own tucked in or loose over a basic t shirt?

MiddleAgedDread · 17/04/2025 06:40

What sort of UK holiday? You’d look a bit out of place in those dresses in the Lake District!!

These dresses are lovely but sadly don’t work with a big chest!

Mulledjuice · 17/04/2025 06:44

What kind of thing will you be doing on your holiday?

SoScarletItWas · 17/04/2025 06:44

Someone on the thread about ‘how do people make looking pulled together normal’ posted about a new brand at Next called The Set.

All mix and match basics in different colour palettes. Sounds worth a look @BasketballScoop as you liked PP’s link to the Uniqlo set!

Ooooh, ‘The Set’ looks interesting!

foxyfour · 17/04/2025 06:56

I think wide leg trousers, t shirt and a fitted cardigan if you are hourglass. Some trainers, jacket and a bag would look good.

Ooooh, ‘The Set’ looks interesting!

Doesn’t it?! I’m a bold dresser and love a variety of colours, shapes and prints but it almost made me want to throw everything out and fill my wardrobe with The Set 🤣🤣

MorningSunlight · 17/04/2025 07:11

I’ve bought several things from The Set and I’m really impressed - it’s not expensive but the quality is good and I like the colours. Sadly they don’t do short length so I haven’t tried any trousers but the tops and jumpers I’ve had so far are great, flattering and wash well.

Starlight17 · 17/04/2025 07:16

I’d go for some side stripe wide leg trousers - super stylish and comfortable. Something like these from JL or these from M&S. I wear with a tshirt and striped shirt like the JL model with trainers or low heels. I know you said you have coats and cardigan’s but how about also adding a colourful scarf to elevate your look? Something like this from JL

Overhaul54 · 17/04/2025 07:21

Agree it depends on which bit and what you are doing.

The Set ( or capsule as it was used great). Also think about colour.

I’ve just come back from a holiday up north. It was amazing weather mostly but when it turned at the end it was freezing and wet.

The most stylish person there had khaki and white tops and trousers /jeans and had black biker jacket, jumper and sunglasses. They pulled off looking crisp and cool in the sun and well dressed in cold.

I went for burgundy and navy as that’s what I had. Navy and white worked in the sun. I had burgundy boyfriend linen trousers and a Saint and Sofia navy cotton biker style sweat for the cold. I really recommend something like jacket topit as can be worn as either a jacket or jumper.

BloodyHellBob · 17/04/2025 07:36

@SoScarletItWasthanks for the share of The Set! I’ve been looking for new, decent quality tees and sweatshirts and those look fab…might need to place an order! 😁

OMGitsnotgood · 17/04/2025 07:41

Taking note of some of the excellent suggestions above for myself!
Layers are important on UK holidays. A vest top should you get a hot day can double up as an extra layer under a t-shirt.
i take a full-zip fleece on every holiday - comfy for travel, a warmer layer on cooler days, and instead of a dressing gown in the mornings. A cagoule obviously for when it’s rainy but again a lightweight extra protective layer if it’s windy.
Once you’ve decided on your outfits, it might be worth checking whether one of your work jackets would help create an ‘evening’ look. I’ve a couple of jackets that I’d only ever worn for work, and kept my wardrobes very separate. Then I discovered that one looks fab with jeans and another over dresses.
Adding a scarf can also upgrade a day time look to evening, as well as warmth for cooler days.

LemograssLollipop · 17/04/2025 08:01

Very much depends where you are going and what you will be doing.

Over it, unbuttoned.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/04/2025 08:14

Yes, that long link is my dress. I wouldn’t wear it on its own, but with a shirt I found it surprisingly flattering on my little round body!
