Casual but stylish clothes for uk holiday next week

BasketballScoop · 16/04/2025 20:42

Im in a bit of a style rut clothes-wise as my weight’s been up and down a bit the last year, but its gotten to the point now where I’m desperately in need of some new stuff and am off on holiday next week and literally have nothing to wear 🙈 (I wear smart office stuff for work that’s not suitable for holidays, and the last time I bought non work clothes it was for a very hot sun holiday, so not suitable for uk April).

Im in and around a size 16, hourglass shape but have a large chest which sometimes restricts my choices. Love wrap tops, not a huge fan of jeans. Style wise I’d be more smart casual, though I want to also be comfy. I have a budget of around £210 and would like to get at least 3 nice outfits that I can possibly mix and match. Have many jackets and coats already, and a few cardis but not much else.

Would love some suggestions if anyone has seen any nice outfits recently, I seem to have lost my way with style so cannot see the wood for the trees at the moment.

It definitely depends what you will be doing too, in terms of clothes. We’ve just been walking in Yorkshire and I got progressively less stylish, and progressively less bothered as the week went on!

We go for a long weekend to the Lakes every year for our anniversary and I usually go for the wide leg trouser/t shirt (or vest if it’s warm) with trainers look. I always take a denim jacket and a shorter length cardigan as well. Then for a night time, I have a couple of v neck shell tops that go with the trouser or jeans (which I also take).

We also do a fortnight in the Peak District every year and I take similar things but also some dresses and some extra patterned wide leg trousers for a change.

I’m also an hourglass.

Edited because I clicked post too soon.

I’ve just bought these trainers too and love them. Both of them only cost me £48. I used to live in Samba or Gazelle but I find they make my feet look really long and these don’t so win win.

These M&S trouser are really popular too.

And these t shirts look good.

I’ve bought several things from The Set and I’m really impressed - it’s not expensive but the quality is good and I like the colours. Sadly they don’t do short length so I haven’t tried any trousers but the tops and jumpers I’ve had so far are great, flattering and wash well.

I like the trousers too, but wouldn't order them because they probably won't be long enough! Why is it so hard for retailers to put leg lengths, hem lengths etc on their websites..!

RampantIvy · 17/04/2025 12:40

Re wide leg trousers - if the forecast is for rain I would also ttake some that aren't wide leg or some that are cropped. The moisture wicks up long wide legged trousers and jeans like nothing else.

Wide leg trousers, some plain cotton T-shirts in a couple of colours, mix with your jackets and cardigans.

Add some jewellery and a bag.

@BasketballScoop i agree. Works with trainers or sandals

Agree, widelegs are lovely but impractical if it's raining - or if you're doing anything more than walk in town!

I'm heading north for a few days. There'll be longish walks, friend meetups and dinners, so I'll be taking a thin Uniqlo thermal top, sweatshirt, thin jumpers and 2 pairs jeans. For going out - one pair widelegs, a satin skirt, jersey tops/ tshirts, a cardie and a hoodie, possibly a dress. Trainers definitely, maybe hiker boots, and maybe shoes/ankle boots for going out. Plus a black Seasalt waterproof that works for going out as well as country walks.

Sounds a lot but there's often a cold wind and rain this time of year, and there's nothing worse than wishing you'd brought something cosy!

bridgetreilly · 17/04/2025 18:03

Barrel leg linen or cotton trousers. Ankle length.

bridgetreilly · 17/04/2025 18:05

Like these.

AliceTheBat · 17/04/2025 20:09

FatFace have some really nice wide leg palazzo trousers, and Next have some brilliant cotton t-shirts in lots of colours - I'd look to mix and match some of those, maybe with a denim or bomber jacket.

Inseam is 29inches on sizes up to M and 30 on sizes L onwards.

ChippingSoda · 17/04/2025 20:44

I have some longish linen culottes similar to these Seasalt ones that I wear a lot on holidays. We tend to go in Spring/Easter, and I wear with sandals or simple trainers and plain T-shirts in nice colours from Rapanui clothing. Plus cardi/jacket as needed depending on weather.

t shirts usually on multi-buy offer. I love my dark green and sky blue ones:

Merrivale Linen Culottes

A summertime staple. The linen Merrivale Culottes sit on the natural waist with a wide cropped leg.

So, thank you OP, I'm now going to buy all of the Set 🙂

Thanks for the link to the rapanui t-shirts - they look great and I’ve just placed an order!

Thanks thats handy so what about us tall ladies who need a 34’ inside leg.

We avoid Uniqlo because even their ‘longer’ length is 31.5 😠

I like a 32 minimum and I have found that Markss and Sspencer seem to have sorted their lengths out - got two pairs of black trousers this week in long and extra long and the extra long were probably good for you as they were too long for me!

Thanks I will check them out I could do with some jeans and neutral trousers rather than black. I like Ninepines for casual but they are not a budget option and I could also do with some smarter trousers and some jeans.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2025 07:24

For casual trousers Ninepine go up to 34". I wear a 32" from them and, although they are pricey, the cost per wear I am getting from them is rapidly going down to pennies.

If you want a nice dress I love the Starlight dress from Nobody’s child. Either with sleeves or without. Always get compliments when wearing mine and looks great casual or smart.

I've had my eye on a couple of their dresses for a while now... bit concerned they are only for super skinny people though! Would you recommend sizing up/down/true to size?

Chocdown · 18/04/2025 08:09

@Kizzy192 I find the sizing of NC pretty true to size (I’m a 14 and the dresses, trousers and shirts I have from NC are all 14). Those dresses are not generous in the bust area though.

Namechange032025 · 18/04/2025 11:19

I was about to come on here and recommend some stuff but it's already been mentioned!!! I'm 14ish hourglass with big boobs.

Bought a set of The Set tee shirts for my Easter holidays and have been a total staple (was in Spain mind but weather mixed!) only £24 and had 4 tops, 3 if the colours really useful and well cut.

Also have 2 Startlight dresses from nobody's child which look fab but are very booby so maybe not if you're doing brass rubbings in Canterbury Cathedral.

I love these trousers, really flattering and bargain in the sale https://www.hush-uk.com/lyra-oversized-tie-waist-trousers-black/011061-0456.html

Wear with vest top and open shirt.

I tried one of there dresses with a similar cut/style around the bust and found the fit extremely small but I am also tall and plus sized so that style definitely didn’t work for me.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2025 13:07

The Nobody's Child dresses have too much room in the bust area for me 🙁
