Am I too old for this dress?

Honest answers please! I bought this dress in Next yesterday just because I saw it and loved it. Going on holiday to Spain soon so wss browsing for a few new bits. DD (19) was with me & said it was nice. It sits above the knee & now I’m worried I’m too old for it. Especially as it’s low at the front & back. Is it too much skin on show? I’m 52, 5’2 & size 10-12. My legs are decent, fairly slim & toned.

At £28 it wasn’t expensive but I am trying to decide whether to keep for my holiday or send back!Next summer dress

No! Not at all - perfect for holiday.

myplace · 13/04/2025 19:18

No, of course not! There’s no rules about how much skin you can show. I would hate it, and feel massively exposed, but it’s about the length for me. I would be terrified of it swishing up I’ve my head in a stiff wind! 🤣

Smallmercies · 13/04/2025 19:19

Are you alive? Is your skeleton still clothed in flesh? Then you're not too old! Wear the dress 😊.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/04/2025 19:19

Perfect for a hot holiday

Divebar2021 · 13/04/2025 19:21

The only reason I would say no is that I think you deserve something a bit swisher that a £28 dress from Next ( but nothing to do with your age or size)

Marianwallace · 13/04/2025 19:21

Looks perfectly fine to me.

MetaDaughter · 13/04/2025 19:21

It’s just a sun dress - for wearing in hot weather?

What do you suppose women of every age and every size who live in hot countries wear every day? 😂

henlake7 · 13/04/2025 19:26

To me it looks like the kind of hot weather dress you could wear if you were 7 or 70! For a casual beachy dress it looks ideal.
(I'm 52 and I wore a dress that was similar length and neckline today.....admittedly it was with tights but I never even considered wether I 'should' wear it!).

Coali · 13/04/2025 19:38

I don’t think age has anything to do with that dress, in fact I would say it’s an older person style. It does look a bit like a nightie though, I’m sure you can find something much nicer!

Treacletartfart · 13/04/2025 19:47

It’s gorgeous and you will look lovely in it. Have a fab holiday

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2025 19:48

You’re not too old, but it looks like a nightie. I don’t like it at all, sorry.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 13/04/2025 19:49

Not too old for it but it’s giving faded old nightie vibes 😕

Trovindia · 13/04/2025 19:49

To me (age 50) it looks like an old lady dress so if anything you are too young for it! But if you like it then wear it!

This. On what grounds could you be too old for that? My mind is boggling, lol

Blondebrownorred · 13/04/2025 19:54

Surely you're the age that dress is aimed at?

Hoardasauruskaren · 13/04/2025 20:24

Thanks tor all the replies! It does kind of look like a nightie 🙈🤣 I was just a bit worried that being above the knee and lowish cut was a bit too much!

I thought so in the shop but the model online is young so that made me wonder! I have found it difficult to choose clothes since my mid 40s.

@Hoardasauruskaren do you shop anywhere other than Next? As you mention finding clothes shopping difficult since your mid-40s. While it’s not true for everyone, I’d say it’s easier to find flattering stuff in middle age if you can upgrade a little from £20 dresses. (Even if that means looking for pre-owned things.)

Maybe your work wardrobe is all Toteme - I don’t know. Finding brands that give you confidence in your reflection and your choices is worth paying for, if possible. (But it’s a perfectly fine holiday dress.)

I don’t need workwear as I’m clinical in NHS si have a uniform. I get what you're saying about spending a bit more yo get a better fit etc. I didn’t have much money to spend on myself when my kids were young so always went for the budget option. Just not used to shopping in better quality places although I have a bit more cash these days.

I think if you are on holiday somewhere hot or its one of the 2 days a year its really hot in the UK then I dont think it matters much. You will def see smaller outfits in those instances!
Also it looks mid thigh to me, I wouldnt really consider that worryingly short.

irregularegular · 14/04/2025 12:52

It's a bit nightie-ish. But fine for any age if just for round beach/pool. I wouldn't take it much further! (again, at any age)

FastFood · 14/04/2025 13:02

Not too old, quite the opposite. You're 40 years too young to wear what looks like a glorified grandma apron.

Lascivious · 14/04/2025 13:06

I’m the same age. I wouldn’t wear it, but only because I don’t like it. Age shouldn’t stop you wearing anything you feel comfortable in.

I tend to avoid short things because they while my legs are slim, my knees look like potatoes.

You are definitely not too old for it, not overly keen on the dress though, unless you have a great tan it could make you look washed out
