I'm now retired and can finally dress to please myself after many years of smart, professional outfits and sensible, Mumsy weekend clothes.

I've been slowly building up a wardrobe of clothes that reflect my true preferences, which chime with what I wore as a teenager (late 60s, early 70s), which was a mix of hippy, Biba, boho, vintage Edwardian & Art Deco.

I spend a lot of time on Vinted, searching through clothes by Monsoon & East. I've also used the search terms Steampunk and Goth as they've thrown up some interesting jackets.

Are there any labels I'm missing? What else could I search for?

Please feel free to share any treasures from your own wardrobe for inspiration!

All About Audrey. Affordable hippy vibe.

@Shetlands that's a perfect description of Kensington market!

I wear a lot of secondhand vintage stuff, a lot of boho/hippie/70s stuff I have is not necessarily from particularly boho labels, just stuff I like. Today, I'm in flared jeans that are jbrand from the charity shop, a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt from Etsy and a Harris tweed jacket with no label from Vinted.

If I were a size 8 I'd bid on this
Laura Ashley dress

If I were you I'd look for Laura Ashley (up to around the end of the1990s when the quality was excellent) and Droopy & Brown on ebay

I am a size 8 but that’s way out of my budget!!!! It’s bloody gorgeous 😩

Have a look at American Duchess for shoes. I don't have any but have been lusting after them for some time.

Do not look at Joe Browns, they are to clothes as Chris Rea is to music.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 11/04/2025 00:04

You could also search for Cabbages & Roses on ebay but it will be scary prices.

I have a wardrobe full of Laura Ashley dresses from the 70s and 80s that I hope one day I'll be slim enough to wear again 🙁
These days I buy some dresses from Lady V, and I've had a couple of pairs of shoes from Irregular Choice.

They have the occasional nice dress, maybe once every two years but you've got to get past all those bloody tunics first. It's the garment names that irritate me though, all that 'Perfectly Purple' and 'Remarkable Raincoat'.

There's a current thread about decluttering. I don't do much decluttering but I wish I'd held on to more of my Laura Ashley dresses.

OP if budget isn't restricted there's Kindred of Ireland, Egg, Casey Casey, Bergfarbel, Album di Famiglia, Apuntob

More sensible budget, Palava.

As mentioned by a couple of PPs, you may find something you like at Joanie Clothing. They have impeccable eco creds, and - wait for it! - ongoing collaborations with Celia Birtwell and Bus Stop.

If anyone else likes vintage style shoes, I have some from Memery. The quality is superb so they're worth the £££.

I have these and these. My next pair will be these.

I still have a Laura Ashley dress from the 70s with a 'Made in Wales' label. Yes I'm shamelessly bragging but also posting to warn anyone thinking of buying one online that mine is labelled a size 10 but would almost certainly be a 6 today. I'm officially still a size 10 but I can't get the zip higher than my waist.

And absolutely no way am I 'decluttering' it so don't even ask Grin

ShowOfHands · 11/04/2025 09:39

I have several vintage Laura Ashley and St Michael dresses (DD wore my velvet purple vintage Laura Ashley to prom) and the sizing is hilarious. A couple are size 14 and I'm a slim size 10 and they're a perfect fit.

Floisme · 11/04/2025 09:47

That sounds about right to me. If 70’s sizing was still applied then I imagine I’d be a 14. As it is I’m about a stone and a half heavier than I was at 18 but still a size 10. Confused

Shetlands · 11/04/2025 09:49

Oh yes the sizing! Back in the day, I was a size 12 and apart from a blip around the menopause, I'm an 'old' 12 again (5.5ft tall), which these days seems to equate to a current size 10 in many brands. I was really shocked to see that Vinted has size 12 classified as large!
