is it a uniform or what? I am about to have dc3 (and already have two under 5) and am working from home for 2 days a week now so no need for work clothes. How do I avoid going down the slippery slope to comfort and not caring (wails)

OP posts:

i am thinking linen type trousers, as I need to have something other than my staple jeans to sling on. I need to grown up in the trouser dept

but I am a size 14/16, and about 5.4. Linen equals all my flab wobbly, doesn't it??

What sort of shape, shuodl I get?

Tommy · 16/05/2008 08:23

I am obviousy so unstylish....

(fortunately, I am with Trinity on this one and don't give a monkeys )

piratecat · 16/05/2008 08:25

i threw out my 3/4 trousers from 1999 the other day. I have been saying will wear them, every summer, and they don't suit me!! They were kind of skatey, and now i am approaching 40, well, who the hell was I kidding.!!

(sobs at appraoching 40)

stuffitllama · 16/05/2008 08:25

no, linen is very kind to all
don't get a crispy shiny one
and make sure they're long enough to flop down but not too long to drag

if you get some that suit, buy loads then you never have to think about it again

BeauLocks · 16/05/2008 09:24

yes

i would rather wear a skirt too thatn cropped breeks

an NO clarks hiking sandal thingys

numptysmummy · 16/05/2008 09:27

Cropped trousers are far better than the alternative which is proper shorts with corn beef legs sticking out. And anything is better than jeans. I'm banning myself from them - i can neverget a good fit and they are such a cop out. Agree linen trousers the way to go. Loads about at the moment. Even primark have some cheap wear and chuck ones.

noddyholder · 16/05/2008 09:27

i am terrible have a girly weekend with very old friends this week and is a major military operation What is a maven?

wasabipeanut · 16/05/2008 09:33

I'd go for a nice, properly fitting pair of jeans myself and dress top up or down depending on occasion. The fit is, IMHO, critical. If it's too hot then decent linen trousers - yes or a nice flippy knee length skirt and pretty top.

I haven't done cargo trousers for a long, long time. I luuuuurve clothes.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 16/05/2008 10:07

Slim-leg 3/4 cropped trousers with fitted t-shirts and good quality sweater/cardigan (I seem to wear extremes of either chunky knits or cashmere).

Linen often looks nice on other people (DH in a white linen shirt, v. sexy) but makes me look like I slept in the dogs basket.

I can spend an entire summer in shift dresses with flats or heels.

those are not the type of thing which most people wear. Those are lovely esp with heels or ballet pumps. It is the drawstring waist sack of potato ones that look terrible

i mostly do tight t shirts tho

Seasider · 16/05/2008 10:14

Because it's easy.

stuffitllama · 16/05/2008 10:49

you are all wrong about linen trousers being mumsy

Seasider · 16/05/2008 11:19

I cannot see the problem with linen trousers, I'd rather wear them than 3/4 myself...

zippitippitoes · 16/05/2008 11:21

i think it depends who is wearing clothes tbh how mumsy they look

some people can wear a hesian potato sack and look sexy

Anna8888 · 16/05/2008 11:54

Baggy T-shirts or polo shirts are a complete non-starter and should be binned.

Three-quarter length trousers are fine if they are slim-fit and glamorous. They should never be remotely baggy or cut straight - they need to be close to the leg and end below the calf, where your leg slims towards your ankle. And they must, imperatively, be worn with glamorous shoes (ballet flats or gold leather flat sandals are fine) and a pretty top.

Anna8888 · 16/05/2008 11:56

I don't understand the linen trousers either.

They are always crumpled and faded.

Cod - you are very wrong about combats/army look etc - very low-key glam providing the rest of the outfit is feminine - and, crucially, they shouldn't be ironed
