Help me find a stunning, head turning dress!

This is the brief:

  • Long/maxi dress (black/white tie dress code)
  • Summer (weather should be hot/very hot)
  • Body type: the plus: tall/very slim, the minus: no boobs
  • Age: mid 40s
  • as an absolute must the dress should be 1) very fitted at least around the upper body and waist all the way down to the thighs (not ruling out see through parts), then bottom part can be a bit looser. (no loose dress) and 2) allow me to wear a push up bra. 3) neckline - slightly plunging or not at all, both can work but an overall balance should be achieved
  • colours: fairly open but no sequins/glitters. Ideally no black but navy ok. Summer colours welcome
  • not too fussy, not too much unnecessary fabric
  • context: this is not a wedding, more like a summer party for a special occasion with friends (I won’t know everyone, far from that). My husband will wear a tuxedo.
  • need to be high quality/classy. Price not really an issue but unlikely to spend >£2k

thank you!

I've just trawled The Outnet, too (again, lol) filtered to under £2k in size 10. Working on the basis of your stated requirements, OP, plus a sense that you want a "Who was that woman in the ..?" effect, I picked these. Hope you enjoy 'em!

  1. MARCHESA NOTTE Off-the-shoulder silver sequined guipure lace gown
  2. RHEA COSTA White Athena off-the shoulder draped satin gown
  3. BALMAIN Mint Embellished mesh gown
  4. VICTORIA BECKHAM Ruffled metallic georgette gown
  5. JENNY PACKHAM Ruffled crystal-embellished tulle gown (OK, this one's for a laugh)
Edited

I really like the Balmain one!

I quite like the look of them, need to look at them in more details and see if I could dare and if my small boobs would not look too awkward in them.

Those reformation silk dresses are stunningly fabulous.

I might add though, that if its really hot I would suggest a dress that is not skin tight,
Sheer silk is beautiful until the condensation runs down the champagne glass & drips on it.
Strapless, you know it won't be comfortable all day & dancing.
Some of those gowns are sweeping on the floor, not good either.

I live in a really hot climate. What skin type do you have? if there's more skin than fabric will you get burnt?

You will need a spray tan !

Some good points… Strapless doesn’t really work with me. And in hindsight a long gown sweeping the floor wouldn’t make much sense as I’m sure part of the evening will be outside.

What did you think of the Roberto Cavalli one, OP?

You have the height and shape to look stunning in this one, in my opinion.

@TheSquareMileI love it!! Thank you for suggesting, this is quite my style, really love the back in particular! I need to check something about the venue to make sure the length would work.

I love that one too! Don’t let a comment about your boobs affect the dress that you wear- you’d look stunning in that I’m sure

I have never felt the need or want to "stand out and be head turning" and hate flashy clothing. All my friends tell me I am always well turned out. There is a huge difference between style and fashion, I am stylish.

I didn’t ask for something “flashy”. Quite the opposite. In my initial post I mentioned “no sequins/glitters” (but then changed my mind after looking at some suggestions 🙃) and “not too fussy, not too much fabric”. You obviously took my title quite literally, I am indeed the opposite of “flashy”. But I like to be well dressed, look good… My daily go-to style is usually fairly simple (some would say “plain” ), probably to avoid attracting unwanted attention…. But it fits well and I am also often complimented.
I have the opportunity to have fun one weekend, the dress code is actually along the same lines of my title and I want to play the game. There are things I don’t like about me but I can’t complain about my body (except the boobs!) so I want to find the right dress to take advantage of it.

Me, too 🤗 It's one of those dresses that many might say you can get for £80 at a high-street chain, but you can even tell from the photo that this one's just better. I don't always think price reflects quality; it often just reflects ambition. I'm willing to bet, though, that if a twin wore this alongside her sister in a knock-off, you'd immediately know which was in the Balmain.

Glad you seem to have found a "really you" dress, though! Your event sounds fun. Enjoy it!

CuriousEgg · 05/04/2025 09:31

Violettaaa · 04/04/2025 22:10

Do you have any dress in mind @CuriousEgg or any style that you think would be particularly suitable? I’m feeling pretty low about it at the moment so I would either want to hide them or “pretend” with a push up bra but I realise many of these dresses won’t work with this type of bra.
I used to not care about it and even enjoyed being able to wear anything, but a close one made a comment recently along the lines of me looking androgynous and I can’t help thinking about it!

Honestly - i’m a bit rubbish at finding dresses. Like you, I go to others to help me find them. The time I realised that my flat chest didn't matter was when a friend took me shopping and forced me to try on something that I would never have dreamed of wearing because I couldn't wear a bra that gave me some boobs. When I put the dress on, It was still apparent that I had a flat chested but i loved the dress so much that I didn't care that I had a flat chest. Kind of had this realisation of ‘well i’m buying the dress, not my boobs!’
I tried to find a photo of that dress online but I can't.(it might not be what you’re in to regardless) It wasn’t a million miles away from the one I've linked below. It was a maje dress.

MrsFaustus · 05/04/2025 10:29

Love the Balmain but the Cavalli dress is gorgeous imo.

CountryTunes · 05/04/2025 10:59

In your opinion. We only have your word on that. And this thread isn’t about you or what you like. Your previous response was disgraceful and the op showed more grace in her response than I would have. Personally I think the first dress is gorgeous and elegant. Disagree it’s too showy.

PhotoFirePoet · 05/04/2025 18:19

This one is summery and eye catching. You perhaps could use a stick on push up gel bra? It comes in various colours but I love this green

This one looks like something Sarah Ferguson would wear it’s v frumpy. Lots of much nicer dresses on here and I’m afraid I don’t like first one either.

I am entitled to my opinion and cannot understand why someone would want to be head turning and standing out, for me it is a sign of insecurity or narcissism.

Gymbunny2025 · 05/04/2025 19:27

I think when you get dressed up for an evening out you are head turning? Even if you don’t want to be if you’re looking amazing people will look at you. So why not enjoy it by wearing something you love?

MulberryPeony · 05/04/2025 19:51

I’ve reported your post @1mabon the OP did not ask for your opinion on her psychological wellbeing. HTH.

83 years old and unpleasant. Maybe you have never been able to turn heads but your unpleasant attitude certainly makes you stand out.
Enjoy your evening.

PinkTyre · 05/04/2025 22:35

@1mabon

I associate narcissism with an inability to care about the feelings of others and an unreasonably high sense of self importance.

I’m afraid only one person is coming across that way on this thread and it’s not the OP.

therealduchess · 06/04/2025 11:13

As you're tall/slim, maybe a simple & elegant slip dress would look good? Misha dresses are lovely & not ridiculously expensive.

I’m slightly addicted to looking at designer £2000
dresses!

Help me find a stunning, head turning dress!
Oinkypig · 08/04/2025 18:00

I hope the op picks the roberto cavalli dress with the roses. I think I would actually kill to be able to 1- afford it and 2- fit in to it(never mind look as good as I am sure the op will in any of those dresses)!!!!! I’m sure she will have an amazing night (looking at designer dresses gets addictive very quickly though 😅)
