Help me find a stunning, head turning dress!

This is the brief:

  • Long/maxi dress (black/white tie dress code)
  • Summer (weather should be hot/very hot)
  • Body type: the plus: tall/very slim, the minus: no boobs
  • Age: mid 40s
  • as an absolute must the dress should be 1) very fitted at least around the upper body and waist all the way down to the thighs (not ruling out see through parts), then bottom part can be a bit looser. (no loose dress) and 2) allow me to wear a push up bra. 3) neckline - slightly plunging or not at all, both can work but an overall balance should be achieved
  • colours: fairly open but no sequins/glitters. Ideally no black but navy ok. Summer colours welcome
  • not too fussy, not too much unnecessary fabric
  • context: this is not a wedding, more like a summer party for a special occasion with friends (I won’t know everyone, far from that). My husband will wear a tuxedo.
  • need to be high quality/classy. Price not really an issue but unlikely to spend >£2k

thank you!

That's a striking gown, @Gymbunny2025 (the red rosette one) but I'd baulk at paying a grand for a polyester frock made in China! For OP's event, I'd avoid polyester entirely as she says it will be hot. Even floaty, gauzy poly can feel sweaty in a warm atmosphere - a full-length, solid dress would be like wearing a heated blanket 😬

You’re absolutely right- she’d be much better in the completely see through one you suggested. Her nipples will be well ventilated 😂

You caould give Bianca Sensori a call

Well, she always stuns & turns heads! I missed the part where OP says she must be able to wear a push-up bra, though. Ms Sensori seems happy willing to just let 'em jiggle.

FFS does every thread have to descend into posters taking swipes?

I thought the same. It’s because the OP has a figure to die for and the budget is 2k.

Just shows how easy it can be for personal stylists when the client is slim and has the cash.

The first Wolf&Badger dress nails the brief perfectly , it’s absolutely knock out.

The burgundy Ralph Lauren one is so off the brief.

This is so stunning! I love Zimmerman.

What a refreshing change this thread is - no amish circus tents masquerading as dresses.

hookeywole · 29/03/2025 10:41

I didn't win the lotto so won't be swanning around my yacht in Zimmerman, 🤞🏼 for next week!

That first dress is under 1000 usd on that website and less than 700 gbp in the EU website - worth checking

Melissa Murrell wears this Karen Mullen dress on Instagram and looks better than the model who is much younger. I think to pull it off you need to be very slender which you are. I would recommend seeing Melissa wear it as it’s truly stunning when worn well.

This is Melissa wearing it.

This is not a sexy black tie special dress imo

hookeywole · 29/03/2025 11:25

is it to advertise Melissa M whoever that is?

Ha ha definitely not! I’m a short prone to chubby middle aged woman so definitely not! She popped up on my feed today.

This party sounds semi-black tie as it’s a summer party rather than a wedding or ball, and it might be easy to over dress.

Gymbunny2025 · 29/03/2025 19:41

Any little updates or contenders @Violettaaa🙏😂

Violettaaa · 30/03/2025 00:28

@Gymbunny2025 So sorry, been a pretty hectic day, tomorrow should be quieter and planning to check all the links and update. Again clicked on a few randomly, and they’re all dresses I could wear, spot on 👍🏻 Thanks a lot to all of you for great sources of inspiration.

I think my preferred one (and the one I had in my dreams when laying out the brief) is the first one, the wolf & badger. I just need to think if I can realistically wear it/dare wearing it. I need to look at it in more details on a big screen (for now only seen it on my phone). Three things I am wondering about this dress:

  • Is it possible to find a push up bra to wear under? I already have some stick on pads I tried before but it’s sadly not enough, I would look too flat which would just kills the dress 😢 I don’t need a bra for support but for volume (went from B/C to A- after pregnancies/breastfeeding)
  • The risk of over shadowing the host… It’s not a wedding and the dress would be fully in line with the dress code, but still… Or attracting too much attention. I know I said “head turning”, and I really mean it, but equally there is a line I won’t cross. I don’t want people to think I’m trying too hard (even if there is nothing to try for, very happy as I am with DH etc) or want to make others jealous as I’m definitely not like that, quite the opposite. Not sure if that makes sense…
  • Is the dress suitable for a posh event? (private event so not 100% formal, hence I believe it would be fine)
