Mascara Help - to tube or not to tube ?

OakElmAsh · 25/02/2025 13:57

I was getting utterly sick of my mascara ending in a ring under my eyes every afternoon in work, so started looking into options for long wear. I was using the Sculpted by Amy MyMascara (brilliant Irish brand if you don't know it), and i love how i got lovely fluffy defined eyelashes, but my eyes must water a lot because it wasn't staying put.

After reading about options - waterproof etc, I decided to get a tubing mascara, and got the No7 Tubing mascara (this one https://www.boots.ie/no7-pro-artist-thats-a-wrap-tubing-mascara-8-5ml-10358289 ) aaaaannnd .... its a fecking disaster. it clumps my eyelashes together so it looks like i have 7 lashes per eye, it get EVERYWHERE when I'm putting on. And to remove it, even though i'm using warm (even hot) water, it feels like i'm pulling out my eyelashes individually.

Suffice to say, not a success ... so do i give up on tubing mascara altogether, and go for a waterproof (if so which one ?) Or are other tubing mascaras less torturous ?

I've always had the same problem, haven't tried tube mascara but I now have Maybellene waterproof mascara and it is staying put.

thehorsesareallidiots · 25/02/2025 15:43

I have the tubing mascara from Beauty Pie and find that it works great.

Bellybootcut · 25/02/2025 15:47

I'd really recommend the JudyDoll mascara (careful of fakes on Amazon though) it has a strange thin metal wand and goes on almost dry. You can go over it 2 or 3 times to build if you want to.

Immavet · 25/02/2025 15:52

The No7 tubing mascara changed formula a while back and isn't good any more, apparently.

Try Clinique Lash Power for a better tubing option - it is a godsend, I wear it every single day! I think that in general tubing mascara gives a slightly less 'dramatic' effect in general, but worth it as a trade off for no panda eyes on a daily basis, IMO.

fireplacetiles · 25/02/2025 15:55

Had the same issue, found the ELF extndr mascara the best ever, doesn't budge at all and cheap as chips. I do wipe the wand with a tissue first to get rid of the excess then you don't get the clumping.

Wonderknicks · 25/02/2025 16:02

I saw the Elf one recommended on here & find it very good. Again, almost feels like it goes on dry & you can build up layers.

DarkDarkNight · 25/02/2025 16:29

I have the Elf lash xtndr and really like it. I feel like if I use curlers and put a couple of coats on it gives a really nice look. It’s very good value as well, I was using Lancôme waterproof.

I moved from waterproof as I get watery eyes and the constant wiping removed even waterproof mascara - sometimes just on one eye which was an odd look!

I have had a couple of minor issues however with the tubing mascara. It has mostly been fine in the rain but once by the time I got to work in absolutely torrential rain I had a couple of black flakes under my eye even bough it normally needs warm water to remove. Also as I got to the bottom of the first tube it got really clumpy and I had to take it all off and start again - lesson learned to wipe off the excess on the wand.

I agree that the ELF tubing mascara is great. If the ELF brush doesn't suit you and you still have the brush from the previous mascara - the Sculpted one- clean that brush and use it to apply your new mascara.

Sometimes it's the style of brush that determines how well a mascara works for you rather than the formula. I prefer skinnier brushes with decent separation rather than a thick bog brush design. It's a bit of a faff to use a different brush but the results are worth it.

TheLongRider · 25/02/2025 17:03

I like the Hypnose mascara brush but the Essence Lash Princess/ Lash Queen mascara is just as good. I kept the old Hypnose brush and use it to apply the Essence mascara= great results.

I have the same problem with most mascaras. However, there are zero smudges with these...

https://www.boots.com/clinique-lash-power-mascara-long-wearing-formula-10262467 Me (and my mum who REALLY struggles with panda eyes) have used for years, and always come back to it.

Lights, Camera, Splashes by Tarte (Seems like it might have been discontinued, but might be able to get on Ebay or something 😒)

Urban Decay Cannonball was good, but again, discontinued. Their replacement is Perversion but I haven't tried it...

I absolutely love No7 tubing mascara, but I have a compelling urge to pick the tubes off and often my eyelashes along with it, I didn't realise until the day I discovered I had a huge gap in my lashes where I'd pulled them all out!
So now it's normal mascara for me unless it's a special occasion and only for a couple of hours <so I can sit on my hands>

thornbury · 25/02/2025 17:13

L'Oréal Panorama is the best, I think.

SocksShmocks · 25/02/2025 17:20

I only use tubing mascara because otherwise I get terrible panda eyes. the only problem I have is that if I have a sneezing fit (allergies) sometimes my tears seem to literally wash away mascara and I get black tubes around my eyes which is not a great look. But that’s a rare event.

I used to use the Boots No 7 tubing (gold tube) but I see a PP says it’s changed and it’s not as good. Agree with PP the Clinique tubing mascara is great but the tube is so tiny I feel a bit robbed. I like the I’oreal tubing which also has a primer at the other end (the tube is maroon one end and white the other end). I am currently using the Millie Hammer mascara which has a minutely tiny wand (and an eyebrow gel at the other end)

BlackCat25 · 25/02/2025 17:50

Adding my vote for Elf extender tubing macara. So good and zero smudging, plus very easy to remove with plain water.

Sparkletastic · 25/02/2025 18:02

Yup. ELF Lash Xtndr has changed my life. Cheap as chips. I wasted so many years on expensive yet disappointing smudgy mascaras.

SamwiseTheBodyguard · 25/02/2025 20:19

Tube, always tube! I use No7 stay perfect normally and neverhad an issue with it, although it doesn't do wonders things to your lashes it will stay put and is easy to get off with warm water. Funnily enough I was looking at the review for the new No7 pro artist tubing mascara and it had some terrible reviews and a lot of people saying it was impossible to get off, so I decided to give it a swerve when I put my order in.

I've also tried Clinique Lash Power tubing mascara which I remember was slovenly. And I've just today (off the back of a Mumsnet thread) bought the Elf Lash xtender mascara as a lot of people were saying how good it was. I'll have to try it tomorrow and report back 😊

Starhaf · 25/02/2025 20:25

Beauty Pie tubing mascara works well for me

Hixxy1 · 25/02/2025 20:26

I've just started using Wowcombo, which was mentioned on MN several times. It's bloody brilliant! Can't yet gauge how ling the tube is going to last me, but so far, I'm massively impressed. Even my surly teenager remarked on how lovely my lashes looked and that I looked younger! 🤣

This looks really good. Do you purchase from this website? Shipping is nearly as much as the product. But would like to give it a go.

Yes I do. They're not so quick on delivery though.

stayathomer · 25/02/2025 20:47

I’ve lost a lot of lashes with no7’s stay perfect tubing mascara but it did stay on for a full eleven hour retail shift so I do still wear it every so often

impressivelycunty · 25/02/2025 21:02

Hourglass do a really good tubing mascara - I've tried them all I now I think and it's my fave - Clinique Lash power is also very good.

Almostlegible · 25/02/2025 21:23

I used the Clinique tubing mascara for years until I saw recommendations for Elf on Mumsnet. Elf is equally as good and less than a third of the price. I wouldn’t go back.

OakElmAsh · 25/02/2025 21:41

Right I am getting the Elf one tomorrow, let's see how that goes!
