Plus Size Mother of the Bride Outfit

Leeds2 · 02/02/2025 17:00

To cut a very long story short, my daughter will be getting married within the next three weeks and I need an outfit urgently. Nothing is booked yet (will be very small, not in this country) but I want to look smart and as though I have made an effort! Any links to anything you ladies think would be suitable would be much appreciated! I have no idea what suits me (nothing does, really) but I have in mind maybe a waterfall type jacket?
Size 22/24 below, 24/26 on top.
Tia.

I always forget Karen Millen. Love that dark green dress. And this dress and jacket:

KM co-ords

And this:

Do you want a dress, or would you prefer trousers?

My mum is curvy (a short size 18) and wore a really nice linen trousers and top to my wedding. She looked lovely and like herself rather than what Debenhams says ‘mother of the bride’ looks like.

Any good? They’ve got quite a lot of dresses but this was the one that caught my eye.
Karen Mullen dress

Not kind to the upper arms, though! If you’re overweight, sleeves look better.

QuaterMiss · 04/02/2025 14:15

It’s winter, @Bignanna - no one would be wearing that dress without a jacket. I imagine there’s something on the site that would co-ordinate, as with the dress and jacket I linked.

Presumably the jacket would be removed at the reception!

QuaterMiss · 04/02/2025 15:19

Not if it were part of the outfit. Look at the KM co-ords link I posted above.

‘Monstrosities’, @winfongdown?

Although what was suggested was actually African inspired clothing, such language regarding things that might be ‘African themed’ could be uncomfortable reading for S&B posters of African heritage. I am one such.

We have no idea of the race or ethnicity of the OP. (Nor does it matter.) Whether one thinks women of whatever race or ethnicity should be free to buy clothes by Black designers is a matter of personal opinion - but there are plenty of dresses by Kemi Telford or Heritage Clothing that would make perfectly lovely wedding guest dresses. Unfortunately sizing would be an issue with the first for the OP, but perhaps not for others.

Kemi Telford dress

Heritage Clothing dress

Please don't try to put something into nothing. I would have said the same to someone suggesting eg this

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 04/02/2025 15:58

Really? I can see why some one might describe that as "tartan tat" - given that it is acrylic tartan tat made in Pakistan.

There is no comparison with that site and Kemi Telford and Heritage Clothing- even more so if you read the "about us" sections on their sites.

Tbh, if you had described the above as "Scottish monstosity", I'd roll my eyes at as it's clearly nasty tartan tat and bears no resemblance to anything genuinely Scottish. You might not like Kemi Telford and Heritage Clothing but they clearly are not fake, cheap tat.

winfongdown · 04/02/2025 16:15

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle please show me where I said that ?

". You might not like Kemi Telford and Heritage Clothing but they clearly are not fake, cheap tat."

winfongdown · 04/02/2025 16:25

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle we all like different things here. You criticised a cape dress someone else posted . That's life. I didn't like the stuff you posted 🤷‍♀️

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 04/02/2025 16:49

You described Kemi Telford and Heritage as a monstrosity in an African themed dress. You apparently can't see what's wrong with that. QuaterMiss explained it.

You tried to justify it by saying you'd say the same about the tatty rubbish on that other "Scottish" site.

winfongdown · 04/02/2025 17:09

No - you need to read what I said again 🙄 I didn't say" Kemi Telford was a monstrosity in an African themed dress" . I didn't say anything about Kemi Telford. Sorry but I won't engage with this level of silliness.

UpMyself · 04/02/2025 17:59

Apologies for using the word themed. I picked it up from another post without thinking. Normally, I'd say wax fabric or ankara.

Eh?

Kemi Telford is one of the 3 brands which are inspired by African culture and heritage. You dismissed them all as "African themed monstrosity"

I would wear it with a jacket, shrug, bolero jacket or pashmina but couldn’t find the right one. I’m the same size and well aware of my upper arms 🤣

I’ve been looking for a good trouser suit, but can’t find one yet. I shall report back.

UpMyself · 04/02/2025 18:04

I don't understand this. The ethnicity of the designer should be irrelevant, shouldn't it?

That horrible 'tartan' dress doesn't even seem to be tartan.

Bignanna · 04/02/2025 13:48

What a ridiculous sweeping statement.

sweetpickle2 · 04/02/2025 18:40

What a ridiculous sweeping statement.

Upper arms are unattractive as you age and even more so if you are overweight!

UpMyself · 04/02/2025 18:57

@sweetpickle2 , it's not a ridiculous statement. I'm not overweight but I wouldn't wear a sleeveless dress.

sweetpickle2 · 04/02/2025 19:01

If YOU don't like YOUR arms then that's your business.

Suggesting if anyone is overweight (or old!) then sleeveless dresses are automatically unattractive on them is a ridiculous sweeping statement!

UpMyself · 04/02/2025 19:27

I do like my arms but I don't like having that much flesh exposed.

sweetpickle2 · 04/02/2025 22:38

So what exactly has that got to do with “if you’re overweight sleeves look better” not being a ridiculous statement?

UpMyself · 05/02/2025 08:36

If you're not overweight, sleeves look better. @sweetpickle2 .
Men look better wearing sleeves too.

You did call them African monstrosities though which was uncalled for. Absolutely no need to mention African at all. It’s also not for you to say to someone with African heritage that they are being silly. You may not have meant to be offensive but you have been so rather than get defensive just apologise for your words. No one is saying you have to like the clothes.
