I want some casual skirts that don't make me look frumpy or tarty

I never wear skirts because I can never find any that I feel comfortable (or like myself ) in

I always find I either look frumpy and middle aged or over dressed.

Please help me. I have good legs and want to wear skirts..

Just saw a girl walking past in a nice denim 3/4 skirt - she looked lovely but it would have looked awful on me. I was very jealous lol

I would realli like to find 2 or 3 skirts that I can just wear in an 'everyday' kind of way. I'm SO sick of living in jeans..

Please please help me

MrsBadger · 06/05/2008 14:09

SniffyHock · 06/05/2008 14:11

reasonably hippy. I'm fairly hour glass - hips, bum and boobs but fairly small waist.. anything high cut makes me look like a duck

will look at link now.

what length is good? and what shoes do you wear during the day with skirts?

I look JUST like a duck too with certain skirts

People would throw me bread if I wore them to the park

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:14

I think I struggle with skirts because I think I have quite a 'harsh' look about my face & hair.. am quite square around the shoulders etc also which doesn't help.

I want to look softer without aging myself (am 29)

I love those Ted Baker skirts Sniffy but I would just feel overdressed to nip to the shops in one.. think I could wear it if I knew how to dress them down? also what shoes?

I normally live in killer heels which aren't going to look casual lwith a skirt..

am so out of comfort zone lol

if legs are good you can wear ballet flats [grr]

lengthwise it should stop at the slimmest part of your leg, usually either just below or just above knee

wide shoulders means you can probably take a full skirt but if you are normally quite sharp and mannish do not go for floaty florals as it'll look weird

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:20

oh and I have long legs.. so skirts always look short iykwim

SniffyHock · 06/05/2008 14:20

I went through this last year! I too am a lover of killer heels. I would now wear this one with a plain white vest top and white birkenstocks. No jewelry or accessories. Hair not too 'done'. Would happily wear it to the park.

bundle · 06/05/2008 14:20

some big patterns can look Ok esp if a-line (no flarey out from hips bit)

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:21

yes, can't do floaty florals. They are so lovely but they just don't go with me iykwim.

what about one of these stripey howies ones?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2008 14:22

Just below the knee, jersey material or thick almost canvasy linen, fit around the hips but not 'hipster style'.

These are some of my staples and look great, even with killer heels.

All my favourites are old though so can't link.

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:24

Ok, so I think I can do ballet pumps.

So I think I'm looking for skirts that sit on my hips, end just about the knee not floral.. what other criteria?

this means I have to buy new shoes too lol

what about bags? can I make things look casual if I carry a huge bag?

I have a bob and jaggedy fringe so hard to make my hair look 'not' done iykwim.. don't think htis helps. might grow it for summer.

OH Devil, would love to see some examples.. sounds great..

twinkletoesbellyrolls · 06/05/2008 14:27

Ballet pumps are the only way to go for me, otherwise I feel very tarty. Also I am still addicted to wearing footless tights under shorter skirts as I cannot get to grips with exposing my ghost legs to the world yet! Fear that may be a fashion mistake but hey ho!

twinkletoesbellyrolls · 06/05/2008 14:28

Soz, DevilWearsPrimark - don;t think anyone else looks tarty in heels - im 5ft 9in and always had short boyfriends and think it is as much to do with that as anything

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:29

oh no, never thought of that I am so pale... what do you do with legs? not sure I can go bear skinned.. eek. I'm getting the fear now.

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:30

I'm also 5'9ish and feel I can stand out in crowd.. I want to feel small and faminine and have that 'just thrown it on' kind of look lol

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 06/05/2008 14:30

My absolute favourite is a jersey wrap skirt. It has a thick black waistband(about 5 inches) which does amazing hip slimming tricks, then half is vertical burgundy and black pinstripes, the other half is same colours but chunkier stripes. Hard to explain but I adore it!

MascaraOHara · 06/05/2008 14:32

some great ideas.. need to do some work now but will be frantically internet browsing later (and of course posting for advice) lol
