Superdrug Colour Effects amazing results covering greys, but ...

I'm really pleased that these tiny, cheap bottles have got rid of my greys (£5 for three bottles, and each bottle is numerous washes).

But all the colours they offer are quite warm. Can anyone recommend a cool brown equivalent?

Sounds interesting.
What are they called?

SevenWeeks · 11/01/2025 20:37

I recommend Pro:voke touch of brunette. I use it to tone down my permanent red dye.

Great, thank you. Does it cover greys though?

I find my grey hair grabs the colour pretty well . It is a wash in toner , along the lines of the Superdrug one .
I looked at them but I was put off as I didn;t want any red or blondey colour in case my hair looked yellow-ey . I .tried the blue toned Superdrug to brighten but it did no more than a blue toned shampoo

I didn't want to go down the route of colouring again, I grew out my semi-permanent dye , I was lucky that my grey hair came through like highlights not from root growth .

Some of the reviews on the Superdrug one are interesting ! Hair going ginger . ....... wonder if they did a strand test ?

The Bleach London colours are designed to be used on bleached hair so the effect can be stringer as the hair is porous and will take colour ..

I tried the Bleach London grey dye (when I fancied a steel grey) but it did nil . So I was put off trying new things , until I bought the Instant Coffee .

Maria Nila colour depositing masks are amazing.
Hair should be thoroughly towel dried before application to get the best grey coverage though.

As OP mentioned, the Superdrug shampoo-ins are warm colours and they are visibly reddish, so they will look ginger if your hair is light enough. The thing with red dye is that it takes much better on light/grey hair than brown dye so it's always going to dominate in reddish brown shades.

Thanks 70. That's a long development time on the BleachLondon - 30 mins. I think the superdrug ones are five minutes, I'm not sure how they work so quickly.

I didn't realise that about red dye - it makes sense now.

I used to use a colour leave in mousse on my Mums hair to cover grey - had a cool brown shade and a dark blonde, was quite good.

First time about 8 mins then a few minutes

Can you still get this? I can’t find it for sale anywhere

Shallysally · 12/01/2025 15:43

Could any of the products on the thread be used to extend the time between highlight appointments please?

I don't think any of them will lighten hair.

I’d be interested to know how recently you’ve seen it there? It’s not for sale on the provoke website so seems to be a discontinued product and I can’t find it anywhere online (including Asda) I’d love to though as I do like it

I think it was a couple of months ago I last bought it - I hope they haven't stopped selling it 😫

Shallysally · 12/01/2025 17:34

Thank you. I was meaning more for covering grey roots, maybe I could ditch the six week half head appointment.

Harvestmoon49 · 12/01/2025 17:42

I use this stuff, I found it while in Superdrug buying the stuff op uses!
It makes my hair super glossy and definitely means I can go longer between root touch up appointments. I find that with this and a touch of root spray after each wash I'm virtually free of greys permanently now 😊
