Superdrug Colour Effects amazing results covering greys, but ...

I'm really pleased that these tiny, cheap bottles have got rid of my greys (£5 for three bottles, and each bottle is numerous washes).

But all the colours they offer are quite warm. Can anyone recommend a cool brown equivalent?

I’d be interested to know how recently you’ve seen it there? It’s not for sale on the provoke website so seems to be a discontinued product and I can’t find it anywhere online (including Asda) I’d love to though as I do like it

I got some at my local Savers before Christmas for 99p shampoo and conditioner perhaps savers bought all the discontinued stock.

Sounds like you don't a long development time, but found that using this henna based product covered my greys in a non-damaging, almost permanent way. I think the official setting time is 30 minutes, but I leave it on for as long as I can, usually 1-2 hours. Wash a couple of times without conditioner beforehand.
The "chocolate" colour is lovely, without any extra redness:

As OP mentioned, the Superdrug shampoo-ins are warm colours and they are visibly reddish, so they will look ginger if your hair is light enough. The thing with red dye is that it takes much better on light/grey hair than brown dye so it's always going to dominate in reddish brown shades.

That’s completely false, red dye takes the least to greys and so doesn’t usually cover them at all or very minimally……..

For those who've tried the Superdrug stuff and have otherwise dark hair, how did you find the colour result? I'm wondering if mixing it in with some conditioner and using that every day would be a gentler way of blending in the greys?

ThickAsAPlank · 13/01/2025 14:53

I have dark hair but my grey hairs come through white. I find those shampoo type colours either give me a ginger tinge or do nothing at all

I'm finding semi permanent (8weeks) colour the best as it blends everything in, and no sharp line with roots.

I like the natural instincts one

Plantur has a new anti grey shampoo out, meant to permanently cover greys. I've only used it once so can't comment on how well it's working as I think you need to use it a few times to get an effect.

I've been using the Plantur brown shampoo and conditioner for over 2 years now. You never have a root line and the colour takes the edge off the grey, and it's a dark blonde/light brown natural highlights effect, not the reddish tone you get from the superdrug ones. I used to use the Marigold ones from amazon, but they're too good, and at mid-fifties with hair as dark as mine it was too much.

love the superdrug ones - try cool blond 8.1
tho' I often mix it with the strawberry blond one in my hand

I have used this stuff before and it dyes your grey hair orange

Definitely doesn’t dye them brown

I can only use the wash in wash out stuff as I am allergic to semi and permanent hair dye so this was one product I was really hoping to work

Have you tried the cool blonde on brown hair?

That exact one

WhenWillWanksWildly · 16/01/2025 07:05

My husband has been using a daily colour shampoo from just for men for covering greys. It’s been really effective and is progressive so no sudden hair dye job look. There is little warm tone so quite possibly men’s ones do give a different colour. I’m a big fan of the Superdrug ones myself but I leave them on my dark blonde hair longer and the red tones are fine for my colouring even the copper one.
