Is smooth glossy hair achievable after 50?

If so, what products do I need to use? My hair is in overall good condition but the greys I have are wispy and coarse especially at the top/parting area.
Santa got me Boots vouchers so I’m prepared to throw money at this 😀

I swear by Milkshake conditioner mousse when I want glossy hair. I use it after shampooing and when I’m blow drying it. It must make some difference as I’ve had compliments after I’ve used it and no one’s ever said anything when I haven’t!

I am mid 40s and my hair is the same as it was in my 20s. I don't know why but likely because I have never coloured it, use minimal heat styling, and have a diet that's good for skin and hair (I love oily fish, nuts and seeds, etc.). I also love the Living Proof haircare range - it's pricey but I do think helps a lot with long-term condition.

Never heard of that, will look it up thank you! 👍

I’ve got smooth glossy hair but I don’t have much grey and it’s always been glossy. I use Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner and that’s it.

Tumbler2121 · 31/12/2024 20:51

I'm older than you, my hair still dark, soft and swishy, complete strangers complement me on it and it is very soft. I use whatever shampoo and conditioner I like the smell of, but I am very thorough when it comes to rinsing.

HOWEVER my nails are also very soft and I have tried everything recommended, it's still as though they are made of e polythene they are so soft and split at a low level!

I currently use faith in nature too, maybe it’s just not suitable as I sometimes find my hair difficult to brush after. As per the previous poster I also have a good diet, take fish oils, don’t dye my hair and can’t remember the last time I used a hairdryer!
I think I need the right product but don’t know where to start 😩

I use Loreal Professional colour shampoo and conditioner and Wow spray.

I started colouring my hair recently, had very few greys but the ones that stood up and were wiry just needed more conditioning.

SiobhanSharpe · 31/12/2024 20:58

My hair is dry so I not only use a good conditioner but also an oil, like Liz Earle Botanical Shine Nourishing Hair Oil .

I'm older than you but have coloured my greys and my hair is still thick and shiny.
NB (it's out of stock on the LE website but I've bought it on eBay before. But be careful, eBay prices can be more expensive. )

Come back when you're mid 50s and see if it's changed then! Mid 40s is still young. EVERYTHING changes after 50. Skin, body, hair.

Ain’t that the truth! 😁

Sadly I agree, it’s just the last couple of years that my hair has gone downhill, quite a shock to the system and keen to get it back to its luxurious best 😍

TBF my hair and skin aren't much different in my mid 50s, my figure is but the other stuff is good.

Magpiecomplex · 31/12/2024 21:25

Early 50s here and hair and skin definitely changed in the last couple of years. I use Faith in Nature Jojoba conditioner, I find it does the best job of keeping my hair shiny. I don't like the smell much, but I'm prepared to put up with that.

newfriend05 · 31/12/2024 21:28

I'm mid 50s ,I have a far bit of grey ..my hair is dyed ....A blow dry is always a good shout if I need it looking good, and I've just got myself the GHD hot brush ( the new one ) definitely makes my hair smoother was asked what I use on my hair the other night too

Apileofballyhoo · 31/12/2024 21:32

HRT if you're not on it and can. I do curly girl so I don't use shampoo and my hair is much better.

Unfortunately for poster I have to agree. Mid 40s my hair was still great.

50 now and hair is falling out constantly and texture has gone off.

Loss of estrogen and progesterone is shocking what it does to the body.

The achy back is also something new…

RachelCarew · 31/12/2024 22:10

I’m not on HRT. Not sure why my skin/hair is good, my mum has got good skin/hair, maybe it’s that as well as getting the products right for my hair.

57 not through the menopause yet 😵‍💫.

Shiny hair with a semi permanent, 10% grey.

I'm in my mid-60s and there has been no real change in my hair, or my body, only in my skin. I'm not on HRT either. Not everyone is the same.

GreyBlackBay · 31/12/2024 22:20

OK I'm 49 so maybe my hair will change in a few years but I've been using Josh Wood colour gloss and it is so shiny.

I use the coloured one because I have a light scattering of grey but they have a colour free one if that suits better

I'm also using the Wow spray and it's a game changer for keeping my frizzy hair smooth and therefore shiny.

Doggymummar · 31/12/2024 22:21

55 and not in menopause yet, hair is long and lustrous but I have a weave. I use pantene. Stopped co,oring my hair in lockdown and it never went grey, straight to white which I love. I use provoke Ashy to dull it down as it's super shiny. I use Revlon colour glaze if I go too far and need to brighten it up.

Mittens67 · 31/12/2024 22:26

I recently changed from Faith in Nature to the L’Oréal gloss range and the difference in my hair is really noticable. Much shinier. My hairdresser noticed straight away and asked why my hair was so suddenly so shiny.

RachelCarew · 31/12/2024 22:46

I do think that products have a lot to do with it. When I first got a few greys on the top of my head they had the texture of pubic hair 😱. I was also using Faith in Nature at the time,
