Is smooth glossy hair achievable after 50?

If so, what products do I need to use? My hair is in overall good condition but the greys I have are wispy and coarse especially at the top/parting area.
Santa got me Boots vouchers so I’m prepared to throw money at this 😀

I am mid 40s and my hair is the same as it was in my 20s. I don't know why but likely because I have never coloured it, use minimal heat styling, and have a diet that's good for skin and hair (I love oily fish, nuts and seeds, etc.). I also love the Living Proof haircare range - it's pricey but I do think helps a lot with long-term condition.

Mid 40s is not the same as 50s - it's the menopause that brings dry hair. That's not to say that it will happen to you but if you haven't been through menopause yet you won't know yet.

In order for your hair to look glossy and shine, it needs to reflect the light. unfortunately grey hair does not reflect light. You have stated your hair is in good condition so don’t waste your vouchers on products which claim to add gloss and shine as it’s not achievable on grey hair. Generally grey hair is dull.

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2025 08:20

I have fully grey hair (short sharp bob) and I get it to look pretty shiny by blow drying it properly and straightening. It’s not as shiny as it was when I dyed it dark brown but it definitely does still shine. I just use head and shoulders and Herbal Essences conditioner.

PuppyMonkey · 01/01/2025 08:27

… posting this as I want to show @lovealongbath grey hair CAN look shiny.

50 here. My fine hair looks best with Pantene conditioner, just the normal blue one. I also spray Aussie leave in conditioner on it before I dry it if I remember. I have complements on my hair.

Also vegan with great diet and on HRT and a daily vegan supplement. Not sure of the relative impact of each but the Pantene conditioner definitely makes my hair shinier and softer. I have used head and shoulders shampoo for years.

I'm 59 and get sleek hair using Paul Mitchell's foaming pomade.

Clipclopflop · 01/01/2025 08:43

Your hair sounds just like mine. Reading this thread with interest. I've been looking into getting a keratin brazilian blow dry.

RachelCarew · 01/01/2025 09:40

Goergeous hair @PuppyMonkey .

JasmineTea11 · 01/01/2025 09:54

HRT and going short improved the look of my post-50 hair.

poetryandwine · 01/01/2025 10:03

Fantastic hair, @PuppyMonkey

Sadly Faith in Nature doesn’t agree with my hair at all. But it does like L’Oreal Professionel, PK and the sulfate free Davines products. Also Pureology

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 01/01/2025 10:12

I'm in my sixties and my hair is still smooth and shiny. There's less of it since the menopause and it doesn't grow as long as it used to but what there is still looks great.

I only wash it once a week and always use a conditioning mask. Then blow dry to get bounce and shape. If it looks dry or bitty I use a styling cream or oil but that's not always necessary. I often use a dry shampoo overnight a few days in to stop it looking limp. I take collagen and biotin supplements every day.

Come back when you're mid 50s and see if it's changed then! Mid 40s is still young. EVERYTHING changes after 50. Skin, body, hair.

I agree,it was like everything changed for me , no wonder they call it The Change!

Milkshake is good,I use the conditioner spray.

Kalasbyxor · 01/01/2025 10:26

Watching with interest. My long, silky, swishy hair was a personal trademark until my late 40s when, over the course of a year, I came to look as if I'd had a hair transplant.

It is now a perimenopausal crone-crown of wild, bouncy locks, radiating like a halo from my scalp, no longer a natural sleek honey blonde but the colour (and texture!) of jute or flax. I don't use heated styling tools or silicone based products as they cause this new mane to split. Instead, I've embraced it, trimmed it a bit shorter to ensure healthy ends, and just try to rock my new untameable cloud of middle-years glory with confidence. DC miss the old hair.

RachelCarew · 01/01/2025 10:36

@Kalasbyxor have you experimented with different products? My hairdresser, who recommended the L’Oréal professional stuff I use offers a money back guarantee if you don’t like th product he sells. Says it isn’t like buying in Boots, I’m recommending it and so if it doesn’t work bring it back.

We all use it here, both my teens without colour and it works for them too.

Shiny 57 year old very thick, very curly hair after I’ve dried it with a round brush, like you my hair has always been my trademark, the best bit about my appearance.

Olaplex no 9 and Ouai hair oil are great if pricy.

Tara336 · 01/01/2025 10:39

I've started using Wella Ultimate Repair products after a recommendation and have found it makes a difference I've also used Aveda products and found them very good

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 01/01/2025 10:43

I tried many expensive hair products but the one that works for me is John Frieda Frizz Ease shampoo and conditioner plus the serum. And GHD straighteners.

Kalasbyxor · 01/01/2025 10:50

That's quite extraordinary, @RachelCarew . Your hair is the epitome of sleek and glossy!

I am very tempted to get this. But as you say the one star reviews are concerning. Hoping it’s just a small percentage.

high dose iron (ferrous sulphate) has made a massive difference to my hair in just 3 months. It was very thin and falling out. Now it’s thickening up and it’s less frizzy and curls more defined. Still a long way to go though.

Yes I've decided from further research to increase my foliate intake. I anecdotally have noticed when I eat more brocolli my fuzzies on my sides grow more. Ditto if I eat more whole carbs (in moderation obvs). I'm also going to try rosemary oil as that's another natural one that is touted to be good. May look into shampoos that have certain things like biotin etc. I also like Loreal Elvive Detangle shampoo/conditioner and their defrost serum. Aldi do a really good dupe called Lacura which is sulfate free and very cheap. Herbal Essences coconut conditioner is also lovely but not quite as penetrating. I never got on with faith in nature.

I've on and off looked into ster softening as I live in a hard water area which has the worst effect on my hair. It's much nicer when I go abroad or up North, it air dries really nicely.

Defrost= defrizz
Foliate = folate

My hair is naturally thick and coarse and is coloured. I've never been happy with its appearance until I started using Tresemme Lamellar shine products - shampoo, conditioner and a leave in serum. For the first time ever people are complimenting on my hair and I'm happy with how it looks - plus it doesn't cost a fortune!

hettie · 01/01/2025 11:45

Not too many greys here which might change things..I find it's not so much the products, but blow drying that keeps things in check...I never needed a hot hair brush before.... now if I don't use one it goes a bit worzle gummidge. If you can splurge on one with several heat settings that is not to heavy and easy to use that would be my go to....
