No/low buy January: S&B edition

Is anyone up for a no/low spend January? Couldn’t see a thread so thought I’d make one. I know in previous years there’s one thread throughout the year but people lose interest so I thought one thread per month would be better.
I’m planning on doing a complete no buy for January. Who’s joining me?

Yes I'm in. Already started in December and have only bought a few bits second hand. No new stuff, also trying to work through what toiletries etc I have..not buying any new ones.
Anything I like, I'm sending the link to myself and then forgetting about it.

FiveShelties · 29/12/2024 09:55

Me too, the wardrobes are full, drawers are full, cupboards are full etc etc😁

PinkDreamer · 29/12/2024 10:24

Welcome both :) @coolcahuna I’m impressed you managed to start in December!

It was against my will lol. My friend has started a three month ban started in December and I offered some moral support. I was going to buy a new dress for my xmas do but found something lovely in the wardrobe. I do have one caveat though.. I am allowed to buy a few bits from charity shops and buy and sell on vinted. Otherwise I know i would fail!

TiramisuThief · 29/12/2024 11:16

I'm in. I started in December also, I bought one thing I've wanted for a while and it was a second hand purchase.

Statsinyoureyes · 29/12/2024 18:23

I'm in by necessity, landlord has kept our deposit (that's another thread) and moving is so expensive. I've never done it before and would appreciate any tips! We're a family of 4.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2024 19:20

In

Though I have scuppered myself already buying some Phillip Kingsley but it is for my son , so I am excused

I am using up a bottle of shower gel that is one of my favourites then I'll be back to my not very exciting but very serviceable big pump dispenser of Faith In Nature . My plan for this year (well for January ) is to use the FiN on workdays and my nicer ones at the weekend

There's nothing I need to buy really except toothpaste and deoderant .
I have enough clothes ,

One thing I learned years ago is "Don;t be taken in by the Sales . You might get a bargain . But probably not "

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2024 20:23

Actually , I;m okay , it;s December .

I bought some underwear last week but that win't count either .

Disneyland2022 · 29/12/2024 21:39

I’m in!!!

Im desperate for a new car so I’m going to save hard to hopefully put a big deposit down!

I must get creative and entertain the kids for free!

Statsinyoureyes · 30/12/2024 11:33

What is anyone doing, if anything, to prepare?

I've unsuscribed from lots of promotional emails, gone through my wardrobe and beauty stuff to see what I have

henlake7 · 30/12/2024 13:46

Glad Im not starting til January. Just had a bunch of Vinted packages delivered! (and have now answered the question of wether I can rock dungarees at over 50.... yes I can!!LOL😎).

I think Im going to try concentrating on my health abit more so more pampering and exercise and less buying things!
I figure I'll take it one month at a time and see how I go.

CharlotteRumpling · 30/12/2024 13:54

I did this last year, and did pretty well, though I fell off the wagon a bit in the Black Friday sales. I still bought less than 12 things in the year. Some were essentials like a pair of boots.

Don't plan to buy anything in January.

Disneyland2022 · 30/12/2024 15:45

Life is throwing me a curveball.. the washing machine has just broken. £220 on a new one 😩!!

Im going to breathe and move on. Determined not to loose motivation.

xx

CharlotteRumpling · 30/12/2024 16:05

Oddly my washing machine is also broken. Not yet got the estimate.

TiramisuThief · 30/12/2024 16:11

I don't think broken appliances count, or at least to me. They're pretty essential purchases!

CharlotteRumpling · 30/12/2024 16:16

No, they don't. Just one more thing to pay for.

Darklane · 30/12/2024 16:33

FiveShelties · 29/12/2024 09:55

Me too, the wardrobes are full, drawers are full, cupboards are full etc etc😁

Same here, so count me in.
I’d already signed up for the low spend year, allowing myself just one buy a month, but this is better. A month at a time buying nothing doesn’t seem as daunting. I already have far too much stuff. I spent today going through some of it, sorting it so I can find things!

RomainingToBeSeen · 30/12/2024 16:52

I'm in!

I have so many clothes in so many different sizes, it's just laziness that I will order new things rather than having a proper look through drawers and cupboards. I'm also the queen of convincing myself that what I really need to complete my wardrobe is a new jumper/top/dress in a particular shade or shape.

I was out yesterday and nearly succumbed to a new pair of lovely white box fresh trainers and a new top but put them down.

CharlotteRumpling · 30/12/2024 17:16

Statsinyoureyes · 30/12/2024 11:33

Last year I stopped buying for a life I don't have. Post the pandemic, I WFH, mostly in loungewear. I do go out but London is way more casual than it used to be. So I have no use for swishy dresses or workwear.

I also look at cost per wear. I will spend on boots, coats and jeans because I wear them so much. No point buying things I wear once a yearm

KrazyboutKillian · 30/12/2024 17:22

@RomainingToBeSeen
i sound just like you !

I have clothes that are brand new but don’t fit
I’m planning to sell

and clothes that were ok , but never quite right so binning them

enough body lotion / creams and oils to last about 5 yrs

so yes , I need to stop , and make more considered purchases in the future
this will be a good thread for me

Buxomblondie · 30/12/2024 17:30

I will join! But only for clothes and make up. Skincare is not something I buy too much of and if I need it I need it. I'm barely wearing make up these days so more concerned about caring for my skin.

Agree with the pp who said they're focusing on health. I'm hoping to glow with health so won't need make up 😇

foxywheaton75 · 30/12/2024 23:22

I'm in please.
In preparation I am deleting all my shopping apps on my phone, it's just too easy.

Magpie50 · 31/12/2024 02:02

Starting January, right?😐
Coz it's not like I've gotten super stressed at work and bought a dress!
(Disturbia skater dresses are like my kryptonite...especially if they are on sale!).

Raineradrion · 31/12/2024 06:44

I get involved, and every time I receive a subscription discount email, I just can't help but place an order, even though I really don't need these.

To control myself, I've decided not to buy anything in January except for necessary expenses.
