I care quite a lot, as it happens, and don’t buy synthetic fabrics unless it’s absolutely unavoidable. I’m not a “mum”, though- maybe try and avoid the lazy stereotypes?

Wow. It’s MUMsnet! And how can it possibly be ‘absolutely unavoidable’! Apt username.

LoobyDoop2 · 25/11/2024 09:35

It is rarely unavoidable, so I don’t buy it. And anyone who has been on this board for more than five minutes is well aware that it has evolved beyond being purely for mothers. Hence the existence of S&B. HTH.

I forgot to say earlier. When you decide to go for eg bronze, gold, pewter, silver then choose either two or one colours from them.

You can work out or should be able to do so which metal shade goes with your skin. I’m almost always silver or pewter but sometimes do rose gold (got a stunning bodysuit with rose gold sequins on) and have got gold jewellery.

Gold in clothing/footwear apart from rose gold I don’t really suit.

I love diamanté though either in earrings or buckles on shoes, they go with my diamond studs (earrings) too if I really want to wear them out.

If you see other metallics eg pink or blue and like them then get them. I’m seriously tempted by this blue tinsel jumper:-

I love the sparkly skirt the model is wearing the jumper with!!

locketrocket · 25/11/2024 19:42

Never knew I needed a skirt so much until I clicked on the link.
Thank you OP and to all the lovely posters with suggestions ☺️

Anonymityisvital · 25/11/2024 19:47

Personally I think the skirt is horrendous but I think most of the suggestions on the thread of what to wear with it are great. I'd take one of them as a starting point.

ADHDHDHDHD · 26/11/2024 07:13

The M&S jacket is back in stock. 10, 12, 14, 16, 18

Pumpkincozynights · 26/11/2024 07:27

What a bargain!
A black blouse would go nicely. Paired with either black boots or black heels.
Purple would match too if you feel brave enough. A silky plum blouse or plum fine knit jumper.

So do I but it doesn’t appear to be M&S!

It used to be!

What to wear with this slinky gold number…
CowgirlJ · 26/11/2024 12:37

Just as a heads up - I went in to store yesterday and this skirt is indeed beautiful. However, the slightest little touch will 'click' the fabric and every single skirt on the rack had these clicks in them, which, as the fabric is so shiny, really shows every imperfection.

I honestly don't think you'd be able to wear it more than once.

Next have some nice satin bias skirts although I would imagine they'd be similar.

happytobemrsg · 26/11/2024 11:41

I hate it when they do it like this, have used a past piece which you now can’t buy.

There are similar skirts as in the same colour as the original skirt if you do a google search for them.

Thunderlegs · 26/11/2024 20:55

MiniMumMax · 23/11/2024 20:32

Alas, they are all out of stock!!

Zara do a similar one. I saw it today and stupidly didn't nab it...

Missing point of thread but this is straight in my basket......

Same. Well nearly. The sale is brilliant so it's about to go in my basket along with a few other bits once I've done enough looking around.

Thank you @MiniMumMax 🙂

LilyRose88 · 27/11/2024 14:03

I bought this and it was delivered today. It does look lovely on but the fabric is a little too delicate for me and sadly I am going to return it. I am going to buy a similar shape skirt in olive green satin from Next instead. I do have a bit of a bias cut satin skirt addiction - I have them in silver, pink, black and light green! 😂

joanofaardvark · 27/11/2024 16:08

I was inspired by this thread and bought the skirt!

I don't find it too cheap or easy to nick/pull (so far) and the seams sit quite flat - it doesn't hang noticeably different to AllSaints bias cut dresses I've got.

But: on suggestions of what to wear with - I'm struggling to make black things work as the 'base' to the gold is chocolate brown (indeed Ferrero Rocher esque whichever poster said that!)

So I'm still puzzling. Chunky cream jumper is a good option for day but I'll boil in the evenings/going out.

Singleandproud · 27/11/2024 16:18

@OnlyFrench for just £16 you should treat yourself, maybe size up so you can fit some leggings under for field stomping in your wellies

@MiniMumMax how is the thickness of the material? If it is unlined which I imagine it is got that price I'd put a slip under it might be a game changer and help if fit better

Cherubimbum · 27/11/2024 19:14

I ordered it in a 12 and 14 as bias cut. Loved the look of it when it came, lovely dull gold so not too sparkly. Tried on the 12, the seams were wavy and the general shape was all over the place, baggy at the hips bunched up by the seams at the hem. Tried on the 14 just to see if was simply a badly sewn size 12 but the 14 was the same too. Such a shame, both are going back!

LadyDancelot · 28/11/2024 11:48

I received mine today, too! My issue is I can't walk in it (I do tend to stride) as it's quite narrow with no split, so I'd end up shuffling. I got it to wear with flat shoes/trainers so slightly defeats the purpose. I'm 5.7ish and it was long on me.

happytobemrsg · 28/11/2024 12:18

I’ve got an annoying update. I ordered a 12 & 14 and paid for NDD in the hope they will arrive before I go shopping on Friday. They then cancelled the 12 & only sent the 14 despite the 12 still being in stock online. The 14 was a bit too big on the waist & hips so I really needed the 12. So I complained and reordered, with them giving me a code for free NDD. That was Tuesday and it’s still not arrived. Not had a great experience & will probably be the last time I shop with New Look (online at least, because they do really good socks 😂)

Bodeganights · 28/11/2024 12:32

I got my skirt, yes it's a brown underneath, but I've tried it on, no wonky seams, it's a little thin material wise, not see through though. I'll have to put some kind of slip underneath to make it work better. I see it as fine with a black top. It's quite stretchy, I can stride around in it barefoot. I'll be wearing heels anyway, so not much striding around for me.

I like it and for around 50 pounds I have a wedding outfit, and the next three Christmases outfit with change of top.
I reckon poppy red would go well too.
So cheers to OP

Onetimeonly2024 · 28/11/2024 13:54

I bought it too. I am not overweight (size 10) but it makes me look like a gold Christmas Weeble so its going back. No snags or wobbly sticky out seams though!

Astrabees · 28/11/2024 17:07

I have ordered one too. I will wear it with baggy black vintage cashmere jumper, I have it in mind for not doing much in over Christmas.

ShaunaSadeki · 29/11/2024 19:30

I ordered this and it arrived today, not sure whether to keep as it fits oddly around the hips/thighs and clings to tights. But DD and DH are saying keep

Sounds as though the same machinist made yours and mine. A slip helped with the static but the shape was strange to say the least, huge on hips and puckered seams!
