Why am I scared to wear Red lipstick ?

honeylou42 · 21/11/2024 20:22

I feel I need a dollop full of confidence pouring into me to start wearing red lippie. I'm fifty and love it on others, but scared to death to try myself without feeling stupid. Does anybody else feel like this ? How can I not care about it and feel fabulous

Do it. I rarely wear make up. When I went to the Goodwood Revival I wore it. Red lippy, nails etc
Felt very glamorous.

GettingStuffed · 21/11/2024 20:28

Me too, but I think that's because I can only do not wearing makeup makeup.

IDontHateRainbows · 21/11/2024 20:29

I'm not scared of it but I don't feel drawn to wearing red. Give me a nice deep berry or plum and I'm happy though.

Is it red in particular or any bright/ bold colour?

Keroppi · 21/11/2024 20:30

For me, I think it's because I don't see many people with bold lippy anymore, or if I do, it's the main focus of the 'look' - muted eye makeup and sleek hair.

Red is a bit different though as you can definitely wear a full face and red lippy that's your perfect shade.

Doggymummar · 21/11/2024 20:30

Same age, if you get the right shade it's empowering. Go to Boots or somewhere with a makeup hall and ask them to help with shades. I have Clinique Black Honey and also one called Wicked, which is Revlon I think.

I think really red lippy requires very white teeth. I prefer deep pink.

usernother · 21/11/2024 20:33

I'm older than you and I now wear a hint of red lipstick. I apply it thinly and then really blot it. This way it minimises the chances of bleeding and doesn't look as harsh on my wrinkled old face. It might be a good way for you to get used to wearing it.

This is what puts me off. Teeth aren't white enough and red lipstick really highlights it!

BitOutOfPractice · 21/11/2024 20:52

I started wearing red lipstick in lockdown because I felt I looked so pasty and insipid on zoom calls.

now I wear it most days because, well, it makes me feel good.

do it op.

warmheartcoldfeet · 21/11/2024 20:58

I always look like I'm in drag if I try and do bold makeup - especially red lipstick!

I find it impossible to buy one as you can't just stand in Boots trying every lippy on, wiping it off, trying another, wiping it off - you feel so exposed and really silly as everyone else seems just to be able to choose a great red.
Also you end up with a messy stained face until you can't see one red without another.

I always look like Cruella De'vill.

Ideally I'd like a private booth with proper cleansers and every red available so I can try in private.

noobiedoobie · 21/11/2024 22:42

Everyone has a shade of red!

Main thing is warm or cool - if you look zingy in more orange based reds then warm.

I'm warm and look vampy and scary in the blue based reds 😂

I actually much prefer coral lipsticks and pink lipsticks as they are fun day to day.

downwindofyou · 21/11/2024 22:45

I don't like bold lipstick in any colour. I like a stain or a blurred look in nudes or berry but a bright opaque colour just seems way too much maintenance for me.

I also find bold opaque colours make lips look thinner which isn't very appealing as we age. If someone has lovely big lips it would look ok

Agree. That's what puts me off. I also think to carry off red lipstick, the rest of your make up needs to be flawless

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/11/2024 22:51

I have very thin lips , worse as I age (and no thank you , I won't be doing fillers )
I look like a drag queen in red lipstick .

This isn't true, a blue based lipstick (Mac Ruby Woo) won't make your teet look yellow, but a orange based lipstick will. Everyone can wear a red lipstick you just need to find the shade for your skin tone.

Vax · 22/11/2024 06:29

I've never found one that suits me even with my lip fillers so I don't have tiny lips anymore.

needhelpwiththisplease · 22/11/2024 06:35

I've found ELF red lip oil is a good in between look

For pink you definitely need white teeth I find

superplumb · 22/11/2024 07:50

If you're worried about teeth not looking white you need one with a blue undertone. Mac Ruby woo is cooler. It's very pigmented though. Try putting on with a brush and blot..

LadyLapsang · 22/11/2024 08:48

I don’t usually wear red lipstick but in the past I occasionally used Chanel Pirate - the name always made me smile. I’m more a By Terry Nudissimo woman for everyday wear.

I use that too, it's a bit thin for me though. I like a bold shot of colour. I was a Goth in the 90s

I love this one. Tried it after reading about it on here. Had used Dior for years . Very long lasting.

lurkingfromhome · 22/11/2024 09:24

They say everyone has a shade of red that suits them, but I don't agree at all. There is definitely a shade of red to suit every complexion, but it's much more to do with the size and shape of your lips and teeth and whether those are features you want to draw attention to. Medium to full lips & even, white teeth are obviously going to look great. Thin lips and uneven and/or yellowish teeth are not going to be flattered by any shade of red IMO.

Parapaderapa · 22/11/2024 09:29

I also have thin lips and think I look like a drag queen in bold lipstick. I love it on others though!

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 22/11/2024 09:45

I'm late forties, small mouth, very wonky teeth and it took me years to find my red lipstick, but I got there: Mac Viva Heart (used to be Viva Glam 1). IMO it's quite unusual as it has both blueish and brownish tones, but no orange. Plus the proceeds from the Viva range go to HIV/AIDS charities.
