Please help me buy a winter dress...

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me to choose a winter dress, as I am going mad and cannot find anything. I have been looking online but I find some websites so difficult, even using filters, I end up with lots of choices that they are absolutely not what I want, pages and pages of them...

I am looking for a winter dress, by winter I mean, not a fabric that is too thin, also, that I can put a tshirt underneath to add warmth if needed. Ideally midi Or long. Something simple that I can wear to work but that can be dressed up a bit for weekends too.

To add more complication...I've had my colours done recently, I am a blue autumn, so I am not considering any color...best colors for me are the ones from a peacock, also dark brown, red/brick and different types of green, but I have quite a lot of green clothes already, so I'd prefer something red, blue or dark brown...any ideas? Does this dress exist??

I would be buying this Uniqlo one if it came in different colours. I like the combination of the plain top and pleat skirt.

I bought this one in black but haven't open the package yet

I agree, I ordered it last week and sent it back as the skirt was really lightweight cotton and didn’t hang at all well (although it needed a good iron from being folded up)

Sadly, having received mine today, I have come to the same conclusion. The material quality of the skirt lets the whole things down, baggy and shapeless and falls poorly. Not like the picture at all.

And I won't buy online from them again going forward because of the charge to return the items. If I had just 'changed my mind', sure, I'd get it. But not when the quality is poor and it doesn't fall like the picture.

I am going to keep mine, I like it (don't love it) but I think that for that price, I can wear it quite a lot for work. Definitely not for the colder winter days (as now) but I will wear in milder days with thick tights and a cardi

I just bought this one from Zara. I'm 5ft 5 so it's longer on me than on the model. It's really flattering, feels more expensive and can easily be dressed up or down.

This is lovely, I wish they had more colours! Is it true to size?

MiddleAgedDread · 21/11/2024 10:02

@spanglypen i wear a 12 (sometimes a 10 on top as i'm narrow shouldered with small boobs) and the medium fitted me fine

Thank you! Same size as me 👍🏼

So mine arrived this morning along with a cord mini dress. I had purchased the dress for Christmas dinners out and Christmas day. I had so hoped I wouldn't be disappointed but it's going straight back. It arrived so creased and doesn't feel quality at all particularly the skirt part. Back to me and em, you really do get what you pay for.

That's the dress a number of us have returned due to the poor material and fall of the skirt.

I’m not feeling the boots ☹️
Please send help

@LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView ahhh ok. Well that's a shame but also considering the price not surprising

@DreamyRedNewt I saw the Zara one yesterday in store and it really caught my eye / it looked fantastic irl.
Really good quality and the pockets were a lovely touch and unusual x

Only thing is it (unusually for Zara) comes up v big. I ordered the S (I’m 5ft 3) and it was unfortunately far too long and blousy on me.

I got this last week. Have worn it to a fairly formal club dinner, the Ivy for lunch and I will wear it to work as it can be dressed up or down.

Very comfortable, a nice weight and true to size.

I'm just shy of 5'5" and it's midi length on me.

I love sustainable choices and I use vinted… it means I can purchase high end products at a reasonable price. I have been very happy with my purchases. I love natural fibres such as silk, cashmere and linen. I can combine these with quality brands.

pollymere · 24/11/2024 00:36

Look at Popsy - it's not all funky prints. I have a green dress I love from there.

P4ULA · 24/11/2024 09:15

A tartan sleeveless midi dress would look great. Add black roll neck underneath and wear with thick tights/leggings and brown (riding) boots.

GlomOfNit · 24/11/2024 10:38

Not to everyone's taste, but this is a good company to buy from - high quality, ethical merino wool and fairly timeless shapes. Best to read reviews first to see how sizing might come up for each dress. There's also a Facebook group you can join and see what others who are a similar body type to you rate.

Fortunately they have other dresses! I do particularly like this one:

Red dress

Really lovely but a bit pricy for me.

Edited

I ordered this and received it yesterday. It is a nice lightweight cord and a pretty colour, and didn't have as much material in the skirt as some, but I still just felt so dowdy in it it. I took it straight back to the post office.

It's probably me. All the current 'styles' like this feel old fashioned and dowdy to me once I put them on and look in the mirror, from the extra fabric at the shoulders, the high neck lines and the below the knee length.

I suspect I won't be getting a new dress this December. That's 3 I've returned so far. :(
