Please help me buy a winter dress...

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me to choose a winter dress, as I am going mad and cannot find anything. I have been looking online but I find some websites so difficult, even using filters, I end up with lots of choices that they are absolutely not what I want, pages and pages of them...

I am looking for a winter dress, by winter I mean, not a fabric that is too thin, also, that I can put a tshirt underneath to add warmth if needed. Ideally midi Or long. Something simple that I can wear to work but that can be dressed up a bit for weekends too.

To add more complication...I've had my colours done recently, I am a blue autumn, so I am not considering any color...best colors for me are the ones from a peacock, also dark brown, red/brick and different types of green, but I have quite a lot of green clothes already, so I'd prefer something red, blue or dark brown...any ideas? Does this dress exist??

@DreamyRedNewt I saw the Zara one yesterday in store and it really caught my eye / it looked fantastic irl.
Really good quality and the pockets were a lovely touch and unusual x

This:

Justine Tabak

is gorgeous. As is the red cord on the same site.

It's a nice dress but £275 it is very expensive for brushed cotton.

A simple style like that would not be difficult for someone who has basic dressmaking skills to sew from a similar pattern. I'd be a bit concerned about how the fabric creases (look at the lower half of the back of the dress in the 5th image, where the model is standing in front of a blue fence).

Interesting username @CapaciousHandbag! Have you met @CapaciousHag - who has been known to post on S&B?

I've just ordered the Zara dress in 2 colours to try. Quite like the forgiving look of it. I keep going back to look at it online, and decided why not. Plus, now that it's the 15th, the return timing extends to 30th December for the Christmas period.

Brakeburn is good for this and they don't have so many choices it's overwhelming. It is similar in style to Fat Face / Seasalt but a fraction of the price and they often have a sale on. I find their clothes wash well.

I like their website, as you say, not too much choice, but I prefer it to hundreds of pages of choices...I find it overwhelming! I have saved three dresses to potentially buy one of them.

I passed the Zara dress in a store today. I’m fond of Zara’s styling but the dress really is just a whisper of a thing - it’s a winter dress only in colour, really, really thin with absolutely no weight at all.

I guess those of you who’ve suggested it just don’t feel the cold?

Thankfully there must be a happy medium somewhere between £275 and £27 …

I bought the brown one yesterday (online)

I haven't seen the dress in the flesh yet, but agree that being short-sleeved, it is not really a winter dress. But I also think that worn with a cardigan, tights and boots would be absolutely fine

I agree, I ordered it last week and sent it back as the skirt was really lightweight cotton and didn’t hang at all well (although it needed a good iron from being folded up)

Also this, though bit unsure about the embroidery. Kaia Embroidered Corduroy Midi Dress Red | Day Dresses | Monsoon UK.

"bit unsure" - If it's of any help the embroidery ruins it.

I received the Joe Browns Winter collection catalogue today. A good range of dresses in that.

I would be buying this Uniqlo one if it came in different colours. I like the combination of the plain top and pleat skirt.

Fortunately they have other dresses! I do particularly like this one:

Red dress

That is so beautiful. I wish they did it in other colours than red and black. It would look great in a deep or smoky blue.

What would happen to those pleats when you washed it?

Hmmm assume they are perma press type or maybe stitched at the top? None of the reviews mention how it washes so I couldn’t be sure!

I have a similar dress (couple of years ago now) from Mint Velvet and that gets machine washed then hung up to dry, and the pleats fall back just fine. They aren’t quite as complex at the top as the Uniqlo one, though.

Grammarnut · 16/11/2024 11:38

The embroidered Monsoon ones are lovely, in jewel colours, too.

MeatPotatos · 16/11/2024 11:45

apparently this is a sezane dupe - I don't like it myself as it wouldn't suite me - sorry I did not read the whole thread
