I can't dress for autumn/winter.. help!

So I'm a summer person! I love summer dressing...I have heaps of summer dresses and I wear with various sandals, flip flops etc when the weather is good.

I am currently still in my dressing gown because I have no idea what to wear when the weather is colder 😂

I only like wearing dresses and I hate tights...I dislike the feel of jeans. I like leggings but think they don't look very grown up or sophisticated. I dislike the feeling of being bundled up. I hate wearing boots...they take ages to put on. I also hate trainers. I only like shoes I can slip on.

I just want to be able to chuck something on in the morning that looks relatively nice but appropriate. Winter dressing is just such a huge faff.

Anyone else struggle?

Love winter. Why not a superlong sweater over leggings and pull on boots.

Mmmkaay · 02/11/2024 13:25

Place marking for suggestions! I want to look pulled together especially for work, but don't think sweaters ready work, they just look bunches up if I try to tuck or belt them - I've got loafers for quickly slipping on but think they look crap with socks / hate cold ankles... It's hard work!

Outfit idea is good actually....thanks. I do have a pair of pull on ankle boots and usually end up wrestling with them 😂

Yes I don't like socks. I don't even own a pair...I steal them from my dh or DC if i ever need a pair 😂

My FAVOURITE season. Sweater dresses in black grey burgundy with super bright opaque tights. Black suede knee boots or patent loafers are my go to.

borntobequiet · 02/11/2024 13:29

Hopeless.
Go and live in a hot country.

MorrisZapp · 02/11/2024 13:31

You've jumped the gun. It isn't actually cold yet so jeans, jumpers and boots aren't calling you yet. I live in Scotland and I'm still wearing my sandals every day! There's another very mild week incoming so ignore the pumpkin spicers and dress so you can actually breathe.

When it's actually cold your feet will instinctively shy away from sandals and beg to be socked up inside shoes or boots.

Yes I want to but feel quite self conscious and have been wearing my summer stuff even up to last week with lots of puzzled looks from others!

I could cope with loafers

Well I puzzle look right back at them! Literally in bare arms yesterday for part of my walk and yes, people do look. But I wonder do they look at their weather app? It's no colder now than it was in June! Pity the fools who dress for the calendar not the weather.

LetsChaseTrees · 02/11/2024 13:38

Get slip on trainers, zip up boots, figure out what it is about various winter things you don’t like and minimize them!

Tights - have you tried footless? I much prefer them, don’t feel nearly as restrictive as full footed tights. They work well with boots.

Oversized jumper? Just chuck it over your summer dresses.

Comedycook · 02/11/2024 13:40

I think it's partly sensory and partly laziness. Just much quicker in summer to chuck on a dress.

Oh never thought of footless tights... thanks

Long denim skirts are great with boots and tights.

What? 😂 it's 13 where my sister lives in Scotland . Positively tropical 😂

Oh and another issue...if you wear a dress, what coat do you wear? I always think 3/4 length coats look awful unless the dress is shorter than them...but I think a full length coat is a bit much

OP posts:
YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 02/11/2024 14:22

I persuade myself the 3/4 length coat is fine - works a treat😄

TheLongRider · 02/11/2024 14:31

Boots with a side zip or pull on boots are easy. Wide leg trousers that hit the top of the boot so they're not dragging in the mud. They'll trap air and keep your legs warm without constricting your legs. Look for socks with a soft leg band, you'll sometimes find them marketed at diabetics. Uniqlo heat tech tops under your summer dresses to winterise them. The tops are lightweight but warm.

I wondered about this yesterday so went without one. When it's coat wearing weather it will also be jeans and boot weather for me. I have a super dry bomber jacket for dog walks with skinny jeans and wellies. Two teddy bear coats for wide leg trousers and a fitted below knee coat for dresses which will be shorter than the coat

lindyloo57 · 02/11/2024 17:03

I'm the same summer is my favourite time, I hate being bundle up in layers but feel the cold, I just brought a midi denim skirt slightly aline in shape, the straight one doesn't suit me, I plan to wear it with thermal leggins under as I don't like tights,

Footless tights (try H&M and M&S) are good alternatives to tights but not as thick as leggings can be.

Sweater dresses or just warmer dresses are what you need. You can as others have said throw a jumper or cardigan over a dress.

TheOGCCL · 02/11/2024 17:37

Another one who much prefers warm weather dressing and sandals but I put the sandals away weeks back! It’s still super mild so I’m in trainers, no boots yet.

Trainers are pretty useful - in an average London tube carriage 97% people are wearing trainers - for all sorts of occasions, and come in so many styles. Skechers have some you just slip into, no bending over.

To avoid feeling bundled up, I look for fine knits and then layer if necessary. It took me years to realise chunky jumpers were not my friend. No versatility.

My winter dresses are jumper dresses worn with thick tights and boots - and I just wear my padded jacket over the top, or a waterproof if it's raining. I have a long wool coat which comes out every few years if something formal is needed.

MayaPinion · 02/11/2024 18:04

I hate tights. I'm a big fan of a longer skirts and dresses and knee socks. My feet are size 5 so I stockpile the black and grey school socks at the beginning of the school year. I wear them with boots or DM Adrian loafers.
