Anyone in their 40s and still uses dark/ liquid eyeliner?

I stopped this when I was late 30s as I always accepted the wisdom that it was "ageing", less is more as you get older etc. And I'm not a huge make-up person.

But for my Halloween get-up tonight, I ended up doing botched-up cat's eyes with a children's face paint pencil and it was really fun! Does anyone still use dark liquid liner or is a total no-no past 40?

If so, what do you use?

Anyone in their 40s and still uses dark/ liquid eyeliner?

I don’t. It defo makes me look older. I have smaller eyes so have never really used eye liner. When I do i stick to the top lid on the outer edge.

I do wear a light pastel pink shadow with black mascara. It brightens up my eyes
much more.

growinguptobreakingdown · 31/10/2024 21:59

I've been using rimmed liquid eyeliner since I was 19 and now I'm 52.I've tried softer pencils and sometimes use brown but nothing suits me more than liquid black.I don't wear wings but yours look nice.

Pigeonqueen · 31/10/2024 22:01

I’m 44 and still use liquid liner every day. I just don’t feel right without it. I don’t do a massive flick though, I just follow the lash line and do a tiny uplift at the end. I used to be a consultant for Clinique for years and years and I can’t stand not wearing makeup round my eyes.

LetsGoDoDoDo · 31/10/2024 22:07

Hell yes! I'm 43 with no intention to give it up. I do occasionally worry it's a dated look but many young people wear it. I simply don't feel like myself without it.

You look really pretty btw!

Doggymummar · 31/10/2024 22:08

I do a tiny thing line where the glue for falsies goes

Breadnjammy · 31/10/2024 22:10

I never did

I know a 40-something who does it and it doesn’t look good imho

justasking111 · 31/10/2024 22:10

In my sixties, still use it but not in an exaggerated way. It does look good on OP

Clingfilm · 31/10/2024 22:16

Whaaat? I do upper lids, no flick as I think it makes my eyes look bigger, I always thought it was lower lid that was aging, especially the ringed eye Princess Di Bashir interview look?

buffyspikefaith · 31/10/2024 22:17

Yep I do whatever I want with my makeup! Sometimes dark upper liner, I always use eyeshadow on my lower lash line, and always tightline

WonderingWanda · 31/10/2024 22:18

I never mastered liquid eyeliner and my eyes don't really suit top liner anyway I don't bother unless I'm going somewhere fancy and just use a pencil on the bottom in and 80's sort of way.

pecanroll · 31/10/2024 22:19

I think it's aging mostly because it's a millennial style to do your eyes like that rather than it actually making you look older, like trainer socks, over plucked eye brows, skinny jeans and no doubt over contouring and highlighting one day! But surely we shouldn't care by now!

TheCatterall · 31/10/2024 22:31

I’m 50 and still use dark eyeliner occasionally. I do all sorts of styles, thin lines, hints of colour, cat flicks.. and sometimes I even do my bottom waterline.. 😦

I have hazel eyes and use a burgundy, dark brown or black liner (have mascara in the same colours) and have all sorts of liners. Wet, dry, smudgy, waterproof… sometimes I use a liner, sometimes I use my eyeshadow and a thin brush.

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff love the eyeliner and you really suit it. It’s just a case of finding what you like and saying fuck off to the naysayers. ;)

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 31/10/2024 22:32

Ah this has made me feel more adventurous! I used to use Rimmel Scandaleyes and might dig that out again. Not for everyday/ work but for dressing up purposes!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/10/2024 22:33

I used dark eyeliner (pencil not liquid) and they will pry it from my cold dead hands.

Hohofortherobbers · 31/10/2024 22:45

It suits you. If I could apply it that neatly is wear it too, always went wonky on me.😒

AdviceNeeded2024 · 31/10/2024 22:47

Yes and I use Rimmel Scandaleyes, do the top lid with a small flick. I like the shape it gives my eyes.

Xmasbaby11 · 31/10/2024 22:50

I’m 48 and sometimes wear liquid eyeliner- I think it suits me and feel it makes my eyes pop. I’m not a very trendy person though - I just do what suits me. Usually brown not black.

MsSheldonCooper · 31/10/2024 22:51

Yes I do. Every single day.

However - I now tightline which means I apply under the upper lashes instead of on top the way you have. I also still do a neat little wing.

yours looks good but that is quite a thick line taking up a lot of valuable “eye-lid real estate”.

try the tight lining method (google it!) I promise it will change your life and make your eyes look way bigger.

WettyBite · 31/10/2024 22:51

I’m 44 and still use it 🤷🏼‍♀️

hopeishere · 31/10/2024 22:52

I'm in my 50s and I do it. I don't do the flicks any more though.

I saw morherpukka recently and hers (big flicks) are a bit dated looking imho.

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 31/10/2024 22:52

I do! Pencil just smudges on me. I only ever do a thin line, but I have big, round eyes that need some definition!

Josette77 · 31/10/2024 22:54

It looks great! You have beautiful eyes. 💖

I am 47 and don't wear eye makeup. I have rather large hazel eyes and find blush and lip gloss tend to make me feel the most comfortable. Plus my eyes tear up easy because my eyes are dry or a puppy commercial comes on. They're very unpredictable..

You look beautiful and it's not ageing at all! Especially since you have zero lines or signs of ageing in the first place.

BackSideMisty · 31/10/2024 22:58

47 and tight line the top lid with a bit of a flick using a kohl pencil. I like how it looks. Age schmage!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 31/10/2024 22:59

@MsSheldonCooper yeah I normally do a dark brown kohl pencil under the upper lash line and light cream or pale gold shadow on top. I didn't know that was called tightlining! I just fancied something more dramatic.

The above was done with the black pencil from my 6yo twins' face paint kit! 😆 I expect a proper liquid liner would produce a slimmer line

BetterInColour · 31/10/2024 23:12

I think it's fun to do something a bit different every now and again- I don't think it's especially ageing unless you stick to it all the time, come hell or high water.
