Anyone in their 40s and still uses dark/ liquid eyeliner?

I stopped this when I was late 30s as I always accepted the wisdom that it was "ageing", less is more as you get older etc. And I'm not a huge make-up person.

But for my Halloween get-up tonight, I ended up doing botched-up cat's eyes with a children's face paint pencil and it was really fun! Does anyone still use dark liquid liner or is a total no-no past 40?

If so, what do you use?

I think your eyes look lovely.
I'm a fair bit older than you but look younger than my age and i love an eyeliner , top lash only for me with a bit of a flick,
usually a very dark brown ,never any on bottom lash and mascara on top lashes only.
Who cares anyway ? if it makes you feel happy then go for it !

henlake7 · 01/11/2024 09:21

I still think its a cute look.
Not something I could manage though. Over 50 and I use brown eyeliner on my lower line, just on the outside edge. I wear very thick glasses and my eyes are kinda invisible unless I put something on!

(ironically my eyes are almost abnormally large without glasses so if I ever try contact lenses I probably wouldnt wear anything.)

I’m 53 and I now tight line my upper under eyelid lash line (if that makes sense). This was after years of lining bottom lash line. Total game changer for me. Easier than you think to do too.

Your eyeliner in the photo looks very good and neat. You could try it daytime as well as more out out dressy times.

Do you tightline with a kohl pencil or liquid?

Kohl pencil. I’ve got a few different ones so alternate them. You could try with a liquid eyeliner if you’re confident with them. Have to ensure it dries though.

Unless I do a very slim line on bottom lash line I don’t think I’d ever return to this now.

rainbowbee · 01/11/2024 10:30

At 41, I do. It suits me. However, I stopped doing the upwards flick as apparently that's dated now. I just bring it out to the side in a small point.

IjustbelieveinMe · 01/11/2024 10:31

The youngsters - 30 year olds - where I work are all eye lid black eye liner flicking uppers and look well cool innit.

I never did

I know a 40-something who does it and it doesn’t look good imho

Excellent anec-data there.

Old women! Obey the rules! 😂 Once you're 40 you're not allowed to do anything any more, as some people might judge you. Stop doing everything!

Yes I wear liquid liner, dark eyeliner, metallic eyeliner, all sorts of eyeliners, despite being a decrepit nearly 50. I had no idea I shouldn't...

I used it religiously in my late teens (with the flick) and without the flick in my early to mid 20s. Then I stopped because I just didn't think it looked good on me anymore (and possibly never did). I have deep set eyes which makes it difficult for eyeliner or eyeshadow to have a natural 'end' point, because of the where the orbital bone is relative to the eyelids IYKWIM. And I think being deep set they already make me look a bit intense, so adding liquid eyeliner on top of that is too much.

I can't use kohl there as again, being deep set it means that the lined area rubs off onto the bone and I end up with a line there. Sometimes I use a stiff, angled brush and draw a thin line of dark powder eyeshadow across which doesn't tend to rub off in quite the same way.

What you can do with the line of dark powder eyeshadow is draw a line with it wet (so just wet the powder eyeshadow), then seal over it with the same powder eyeshadow, just drawing on top of it. In fact I’ve done this a bit in the past when I wanted to emphasise the area. You can use an eyeliner slanted brush or a cotton bud works just as well.

ineedsun · 01/11/2024 15:28

I didn’t know we weren’t supposed to! I’m 51.

It can’t be that ageing, I last got asked for ID to buy wine a couple of years ago 🤣

LoafofSellotape · 02/11/2024 01:11

I use a dark brown AYU liquid pen, I tightline then extend a wing, not very pronounced but enough to elongate the eye .

MrsCatE · 05/11/2024 02:38

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff your eyes look great! I posted about similar a few years ago along the lines of what make up skills are you proud of - now in my late 50's and still do liquid eyeliner. I no longer do an elongated / filled in Cat's Eye but can still do a flick. I'm lucky that I don't have crepey eyelids. From memory, the winner of my thread was a lady who could apply lipstick by bracing it in her cleavage!

Lostsadandconfused · 05/11/2024 02:47

Only when I do a full dark smoky eye for night, including eyeliner on the lower water line.

Otherwise the only eye makeup I use is mascara.

Pollyanni · 05/11/2024 04:06

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff i think it looks great but im a big fan of (top) eyeliner. What colour would you say your eyes are ? I've the same colour and never know how to describe them!

Garlicpest · 05/11/2024 04:12

Thought of this thread on Saturday as I applied my navy blue eyeliner. I looked better with it on - at my shockingly old age of 69, I need the definition.

Workiskilligme · 05/11/2024 05:07

Grey loreal slimliner is the best.

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 05/11/2024 06:07

I wear winged, black liquid eyeliner and I'm in my fifties. Never ever use liner on the lower lid though.

justasking111 · 05/11/2024 08:56

I wear navy, blue, or dark green depending on what I fancy. I've never worn black or brown, but Nars used to do a huge range of colours I liked.

I had to wear glasses all the time so liked some definition. Now I mostly don't need glasses I feel very weird without them.

Autumndayz77 · 05/11/2024 09:00

I use to wear very heavy eye make up for special occasions. I do still wear liquid (pen) eyeliner but top lids only if I can be bothered. I think it makes eye lashes look thicker

BobTheBobcatsBob · 05/11/2024 09:38

I'm 44 and I still love winged eyeliner. It's been a staple for the last 30 years and I'm not going to stop doing it now. If you like it then do it!!!

bananaboats · 05/11/2024 10:10

I'm 35 & used to do winged liner everyday but have stopped but more for fashion purposes rather than because it's aging.
