I got hair like shredded wheat

BlastedPimples · 16/10/2024 13:49

I've tried overnight oils, intensive conditioners, leave in - the lot.

I'd love silky, smooth hair. My hair is also very fine so don't want to weigh it down. I get highlights every six weeks.

Any great ideas?

Redken Acidic bonding - Weleda rosmary hair oil

ByTealShaker · 16/10/2024 14:08

I think it’s likely down to the highlights. Bleach will dry hair out!

TorroFerney · 16/10/2024 14:14

The redken did nothing for me. I have had various keratin treatments at the hairdressers which have worked. More for the frizz than dryness but helps with both. As someone else has mentioned though is it bleached as that won’t help.

Illpickthatup · 16/10/2024 14:16

Are highlights every 6 weeks really necessary? That's probably why it's in such bad condition. I have my highlights done every 3-4 months. I have a balayage rather than just highlights to the root growth isn't as harsh. Ask your hairdresser to use olaplex to minimise breakage but I'd probably give the bleaching a rest for a good while to let your hair recover. Your hair might need protein so try a protein treatment. How often are you washing and styling it? Do you use heat on it often?

BlastedPimples · 16/10/2024 14:20

I have dreadful roots. I can't go longer than 6-8 weeks. I look awful.

I blow dry maybe once a week. Otherwise dry naturally.

I wash it every three days.

ApPHogee (from Amazon).

You might need protein more than moisture.

Crazykefir · 16/10/2024 14:24

I also think it's the bleach. Can you use a root touch up to extend the time between colouring uf you hate your roots. I like colour wow.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/10/2024 14:26

I like milk and light brown sugar on my shredded wheat. Who knows, it might work?

afrikat · 16/10/2024 14:31

Are your highlights being done all over every 6 weeks or just on the roots? If you're having a full head of bleach every 6 weeks that will be making it straw like. I get root stretch bayalage so the roots are kind of part of the look and don't look 'grown out' and can get away with highlights every 9 months. I use purple shampoo/conditioner to keep the blonde bright and occasionally Shrine Drop It mixed into my mask.
Colour Wow Money Mask is a really effective mask I've found

MerryMarys · 16/10/2024 14:33

I'm afraid it's the bleach from the highlights

Tittat50 · 16/10/2024 14:35

Your colours lovely. Against your skin tone I see you'd carry off lowlights really well. Some lowlights would make it last much longer as it grows out. It would help with the dryness from bleaching so regularly.
Coconut oil in your hair overnight can really help dryness but it is a temporary fix and takes a bit of washing out. If you caked it in coconut oil then wrapped in a warm towel to let it penetrate.

Aveda leave in conditioner is fab slso

Bignanna · 16/10/2024 14:37

Is that you,Boris?

Foggytoppy · 16/10/2024 14:41

Are you naturally blonde but mousey - i am and get highlight every 6 months. If not it might be time to think about a colour closer to your natural colour. The bleach is drying it out.

K1ran · 16/10/2024 14:53

Try egg and coconut oil. 1 egg and 2 teaspoon of coconut oil and put it all over your hair. Then wash with cool water. The protein from the egg helps make it smoother. Try this once or twice a month.

Rice water is also really good for adding protein and a bit more pleasant than using egg.

But it's looking awful with all the bleach every 6 weeks. Root drags/shadows are very in and are much easier to maintain.

SBHon · 16/10/2024 15:06

Are you just having your roots done or actual highlights? I’d swap to roots only if it’s the latter.

Donaldfisher · 16/10/2024 15:06

I recommend you find a new hairdresser who understands how to bleach roots without damaging already bleached and damaged hair.

I had exactly the same problem last year and it got worse and worse until I changed hairdresser!

I looked like Worzel Gummidge in photos

You can. You just need a hairdresser who can blend colour properly so that it grows out seamlessly.

piscofrisco · 16/10/2024 15:20

Colour wow kale cocktail sorted mine. I'm keen to give their new spray a try too-money spray or million dolllar spray I think it's called.

AnyFucker · 16/10/2024 15:21

I use Color Wow products and they are brilliant

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/10/2024 15:22

Having highlights done that often (so the colour can look blocky) is the reason why your hair is in such bad condition. I had this until I switched hairdressers and now I get it done either every 3 months or every 10-12 weeks.

Redken All Soft (mostly to soften, this has avocado oil in it) or Redken CAT (to repair) are good shampoo/conditioner ranges for dry damaged highlighted hair.

I actually use a leave in conditioner after I shampoo and condition my hair and try to let it dry naturally afterwards, a hair mask once a week and smoothing cream after the leave in conditioner.

SisterMaryLuke · 16/10/2024 15:30

How does it look when you blow dry it? Mine looks exactly like yours when left to its own devices, but blow dries really well.

goingdownfighting · 16/10/2024 16:51

Olaplex.
