School coat for a 15 year old boy

RosieJosey79 · 14/10/2024 11:17

My son chose to go to school in the pouring rain today as the only coat he has (to be fair a waterproof jobby for hiking) he said he wouldn’t be seen dead in at school. Struggling to find a style he’ll wear. He wants something warm, waterproof and something ‘his friends won’t laugh at’. He’s very tall. Does anyone have any suggestions?

North face, CP Company, Montirex, Canada goose, moncler seems to be all the rage. Also got a 15 year old boy costing me a fortune!

His CP company jacket seems to be a favourite www.flannels.com/cp-company-pro-tek-padded-jacket-608390#colcode=60839003

Does your DS not know what would pass at school? My 14yo asked for a Montbell one this year. He's 6ft 3 and built for the second row, it fits fine.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/10/2024 11:37

@justfirthisboard £460 for a school
coat?! 😲

Digimoor · 14/10/2024 11:44

Look at H&M
Here wearing North Face = getting stabbed for your iphone

RosieJosey79 · 14/10/2024 11:49

I think H&M is more my budget!

Have you tried vinted? My son has bought loads of good quality clothes very cheaply but it is a risk I guess.

@Digimoor "Look at H&M

Yep. Happens all the time. 🤔

CurlewKate · 14/10/2024 12:26

@RosieJosey79 get him to sit down and come up with some suggestions. What does his best friend have?

Mydogsleftearishalfcocked · 14/10/2024 12:26

Don’t spend a lot of money op. Imho he won’t wear it. Even when you suggest that he chooses it!

CameronStrike · 14/10/2024 12:27

Why are you asking mums and not asking him? There is zero point buying a coat that he won't wear and if he's not involved in the buying you'll definitely get it wrong.

Redcrayons · 14/10/2024 12:30

Take him shopping and let him choose. You will most likely get it wrong.

Most of the kids here don’t wear coats for school no matter what the weather is.

MabelMaybe · 14/10/2024 12:31

My DS wears one to this www.sportsdirect.com/jack-wills-long-quilt-parka-sn34-608855#colcode=60885503, but a bit thicker. I think it came from Sports Direct but I can't find it online.

Having seen kids in their blazers in all weathers round here, I'd take him to somewhere like T K Maxx, ask him to choose from what's there and otherwise leave him to it. Buy him a hat or a brolly.

BeaLola · 14/10/2024 12:34

My DS 16 used to wear a North Face at secondary , now he's at 6th form with a much longer walk either end he bought something off Vinted - I can't even tell you the name but I'd never heard of it Grin he has happily worn it lots

leia24 · 14/10/2024 12:47

Only parajumpers are cool for school here so you definitely just need to speak to your son about what he would wear

Comefromaway · 14/10/2024 13:02

Most of the 15 year old lads round here would rather wear 2nd hand CP/Stone Island/Moncler than anything else. They'd prefer to be cold/wet.

BlueChampagne · 14/10/2024 13:16

Give him a budget and ask him to do the research.

craigth162 · 14/10/2024 13:21

My son wears a padded black adidas jacket. I said he could get what he wanted as long as warm, semi waterproof and has a hood.

Verite1 · 14/10/2024 13:24

They all wear black puffa jackets at my DS' school. His is from Uniqlo. It's relatively lightweight but he won't wear anything thicker and at least he's wearing a jacket!

Hoppinggreen · 14/10/2024 13:24

DS is 15 and has a dark grey Helly hanson.
Its only a short walk to school so he needs waterproof more than warmth and it can be screwed up in a bag easily, decent quality but not nickable (not that that seems to be an issue here).
If it gets VERY cold he has a padded black uniqlo one that he can screw up in his bag

HairyToity · 14/10/2024 13:24

We have Montirex coat.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 14:08

I'd have been told I wear the coat I have or get a cold!!! He'll soon realise he should wear the coat when he's getting cold/soaked everyday

Do you think that was good parenting?

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 14:11

@CameronStrike yes.

My parents didn't want to (understandably) waste money on getting me a new coat just because the one I had wasn't in fashion.

Ok. Do you have more than one coat? Or if not coat, shoes maybe? I do. I have a warm waterproof one for cold walks and I have a stylish one for days out in dry weather. I have a thinner jacket for spring and autumn. And shoes - I have smart ones for work and several pairs of comfortable ones for walking. I have pretty shoes for nights out. The OP's DS has a hiking jacket that doesn't fit with the image he wants to have at school. The idea that everyone should just have one of everything and wear the same in every context might be a worthy one but if it's not a principle you would apply to yourself why should you apply it to your child who is probably far more image conscious than you in the first place, and might face actual unpleasant consequences in the form of teasing or bullying for wearing the 'wrong' clothes?

I buy my son Northface but usually spend around £180 - too much for a coat I agree but its down so stuff's easily into his bag and he wears it 7 days a week for the best part of a year or two so works out OK value.
