School coat for a 15 year old boy

My son chose to go to school in the pouring rain today as the only coat he has (to be fair a waterproof jobby for hiking) he said he wouldn’t be seen dead in at school. Struggling to find a style he’ll wear. He wants something warm, waterproof and something ‘his friends won’t laugh at’. He’s very tall. Does anyone have any suggestions?

In Scotland, a jobby is a 💩
I burst out laughing when I read your post 😂
Sorry, OP. Not helpful.

(from now on, I’ll be telling DS2 to get his waterproof jobby on when it’s raining. 😂
I won’t actually, I HATE that word 🤮😂)

@CameronStrike but that's not due to vanity and bought out of your own money.

Overconsumption is also an issue. One other coat fine but it would be functional, not fashionable! I now only have three coats and each one has a distinct use and purpose b

I'd have been told I wear the coat I have or get a cold!!! He'll soon realise he should wear the coat when he's getting cold/soaked everyday

Based on the high school kids I saw when ds was at school and who I still see, they would (stupidly I know) prefer to get cold/wet. My son lost his coat part way through Year 9 and refused to wear another. The most he woud put on was a hoodie. He finally bought a new one in his first year of uni.

Redragonoteal · 14/10/2024 14:47

DS(14) usually refuses to wear a coat. He wears a hoodie and occasionally a gilet and takes an umbrella. He has a rain coat that he will wear under protest if it's really windy and raining when he leaves the house so can't use the umbrella but it usually comes home stuffed in his bag. I've no idea if he wears it to school or takes it off at the bus stop. He has a plain black (men's) puffa jacket from next which he will wear if it's really minus temperatures cold.

itwasnevermine · 14/10/2024 14:52

@Comefromaway then that's their choice. They're old enough to make that decision and demanding an expensive coat from your parents is insanity when you have a perfectly good one at home.

lateatwork · 14/10/2024 14:58

Black. Puffer. Slightly shorter. But very 'puffy' ideally north face.

Above is criteria for my kids. They all agree thought that whilst they would like north face, it makes them a target for it to be nicked. Get your son to choose. Agree re vinted. almost seen as better to buy off vinted than to buy new according to my kids.

I buy my son Northface but usually spend around £180 - too much for a coat I agree but its down so stuff's easily into his bag and he wears it 7 days a week for the best part of a year or two so works out OK value.

I agree, ds1 had a Columbia one for a similar price (minus the blue light card discount) which he still wears now, but £180 is nowhere near £460!

Kids Love Vinted & Depop

Maddy70 · 14/10/2024 15:14

You need to take him shopping. If he won't wear it. It'll be a waste. Itll have to be "cool"

Zahariel · 14/10/2024 15:22

I got a new, 3 in 1, jack wolfskin for my secondary school son for £50, £150 off, on ebay. look there

timetogarden · 14/10/2024 16:38

My son recently got a Napapijri coat on Vinted that he is happy to wear to school. When it is colder he also has a Pull and Bear black puffer type jacket.

newyorkbreakfast · 14/10/2024 17:59

TK Maxx if you can get there

raffegiraffe · 14/10/2024 18:33

My 15 year old wears Napa juri and arcteryx both second hand from vinted

HoobleDooble · 15/10/2024 19:04

Have a look on M&M direct, I get my son's underwear and socks from there because he likes to have somebody else's name on them!

Dunk19 · 15/10/2024 21:55

Vinted is the way forward, I just got my ds one for £12, still retails in JD for £90.

Ribenaberry12 · 15/10/2024 22:05

North face puffers are everywhere in the school I work at.

justfirthisboard · 14/10/2024 11:27

North face, CP Company, Montirex, Canada goose, moncler seems to be all the rage. Also got a 15 year old boy costing me a fortune!

His CP company jacket seems to be a favourite www.flannels.com/cp-company-pro-tek-padded-jacket-608390#colcode=60839003

These are the brands my 14yr old would wear. But if they're out of budget try Lyle and Scott for something similar but slightly cheaper.

Although good luck getting a teenage boy to wear a coat! Mine won't entertain it and we live in Scotland 🥶

Elizo · 15/10/2024 22:22

Uniqlo is good.

Elizo · 15/10/2024 22:23

£500 on a jacket for a school child. Next level insanity

Sparsely · 15/10/2024 22:34

I was going to say try Uniqlo. They are very pared back and Japanese. My son (14yo) - who likes nothing - likes these!

minipie · 15/10/2024 22:56

Hilarious that Moncler is fashionable with teen boys, to me it’s what well heeled Chelsea ladies of 60+ wear.

My teen wears a black North Face one I bought him last year and it's still in great condition. He always used to lose his coat/leave it somewhere so I was pleased he took better care of this one. In autumn he sometimes wears just a hoodie if it's not raining/cold.

Newbieatthis · 16/10/2024 01:45

My 16 year old and some of his friends like Uniqlo, just got a water resistant jacket that seems acceptable! Made of block tech, or something like that, very lightweight and not padded, but fits over blazer, jumper, shirt, vest on the cold days and keeps out the wind. About £70 and squishes up really small.
