Black tie event - would you wear trousers?

Just wondering if you got an invite to a black tie event, whether, as a woman, you might wear an outfit that included trousers rather than a dress?

I'm thinking along the lines of a dressy jumpsuit like this or a two piece outfit like this - and I'm wondering if they would be suitable for a black tie event? I really don't enjoy or feel comfortable wearing dresses and haven't worn a dress in about 4 years and avoid wearing them where possible.

I have statement jewellery but does black tie always have to mean wearing a ball gown or dress, or could something like what I've suggested in my links work?

Holly Black Velvet Jumpsuit | Phase Eight EU |

A velvet jumpsuit will always achieve effortless elegance, no matter the event. Our black velvet one piece features short, fluttery sleeves, a wrap around bodice and a matching belt with a gold buckle. It falls to a wide leg silhouette. Pair it with ma...

Either of those options are beautiful, I especially like the black one.

Alicana · 02/10/2024 08:28

Yes definitely! I’m the opposite and hate wearing trousers, but I think they look very smart, I like the tuxedo suits. I think (hope!) society has moved on in terms of sexism and expecting women to be in dresses.

RampantIvy · 02/10/2024 08:33

They are both lovely outfits.

LookItsMeAgain · 02/10/2024 11:49

Oh thank goodness. I really just don't feel comfortable in dresses (I'd be fidgeting all night) if I had to wear one.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm relieved.

The black jumpsuit is stunning!

caringcarer · 02/10/2024 11:54

The second outfit is really nice. I'm short and fat but if I was taller and slim I would love to wear it.

RuthW · 02/10/2024 12:08

They will be fine

KirstenBlest · 02/10/2024 18:13

I wouldn't but both those outfits look smart. Given that you'd not be comfortable in a dress, they'll be fine. Glam up hair, make-up, jewellery and shoes.

Turnitoffnonagain · 02/10/2024 20:21

I've got some wide leg very finely pleated black silky trousers (about 8 years old) that I wear with a variety of sequinned tops. Trousers, but they look and feel "dressy".

notacooldad · 02/10/2024 20:22

Personally no, but I do like your choices.

Doggymummar · 02/10/2024 20:23

I would, but a tux rather than a jumpsuit

amoreoamicizia · 02/10/2024 20:24

I like the ones posted even if I wouldn't look good in them personally.

Businessflake · 02/10/2024 20:26

I would but would make sure it was extra dressy. I’ve got one which is white trouser half and navy top half that I wear with a sequin jacket.

Ilovemyshed · 02/10/2024 20:30

Both fine, the black more so.

What about this too:

TeaHagTeaBag · 02/10/2024 20:45

I'm looking for a tux for a black tie do but can't find one.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 03/10/2024 01:13

Yes you can. I used to have a black tie suit which I wore with a white , double cuff shirt, cufflinks and a black bow tie.

Of your choices yes to the black velvet jumpsuit, although I think a "le smoking" suit or a velvet suit would be "dressier"

NRBY Velvet suits

Absolutely not the JJ's House outfit. Sorry, it's all subjective, personal taste but it's horrible.

I find it very funny how after years of posters telling you that your hectoring style and habit of insisting everything you didn't like was awful and ugly, you're now always doing the same thing but prefacing it with 'subjective, but'.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/10/2024 07:22

I agree with @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle the black velvet one is lovely but I think I tuxedo style suit would be lovely too. The blue one is a hard no from me too. It’s too fussy and mother Of the bride ish for my taste.

I also feel a little worried about your “statement jewellery”. What’s that like?

The JJ's House outfit is "mother of the bride". As for being told clothes are "awful and ugly" , well, do you tick off everyone who says that?

Rocknrollstar · 03/10/2024 07:43

I always wear evening trousers. I feel more comfortable than in a dress. I always get a lot of compliments and I suspect people wish they had worn trousers too.

toenails · 03/10/2024 08:00

Have a look at the Trustpilot reviews for JJ's house. The bad ones are very bad. (I speak as someone who didn't do that for a clothing website . . . )

EerilyDecorated · 03/10/2024 08:08

Yes. But not the JJ's house, too fussy. The Phase 8 is nice but I think the belt makes it look a bit daytime, I really like the John Lewis tux one though.

Coffeesnob11 · 03/10/2024 08:08

What's your budget? I love reiss for jumpsuits there are a few here you could wear to a black tie do www.reiss.com/shop/gender-women-productaffiliation-jumpsuitsandplaysuits-0?p=1#0

I went to a city black tie do last week and women were wearing a selection of dresses, trousers and playsuits.

TheOGCCL · 03/10/2024 08:11

I feel like we must have moved on from effectively requiring women to wear dresses. As long as something is smart/dressy, some effort has been made. Needless to say I would wear trousers.

LookItsMeAgain · 03/10/2024 11:44

I've received further information on this event and it's a black tie ball. Does that change things? I'm hoping that I can still wear some form of trousers to it.
