“Dressy” dress code

Monket · 17/09/2024 21:28

Been invited to celebrate a wedding at a private members’ club in London in November. Drinks and canapés, and dress code for women states “dressy”.

What do we think? Floor length? Cocktail dress? Men are in suits and ties.

I would wear this. I bought this dress 7 years ago, in navy, for a wedding in a London club. It's been worn on about "dressy" occasions since.

Midi dress

This is one of my all time favourite wedding guest dresses. Sarah Murdoch at her father's wedding to Jerry Hall.

I wouldn't think "dressy" necessarily meant floor length. I'd go for a nice formal dress. Not too casual.

DancingNotDrowning · 17/09/2024 23:32

I’d assume if the meant either black tie or cocktail they’d have specified so they mean “posh wedding frock”.

the two dresses above are gorgeous.

Garlicnaan · 17/09/2024 23:33

I've been to London winter weddings and it's definitely a different vibe to country house day weddings.

No florals, no pale colours, no cotton / linen.

Love the look from @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

THis comes in several variants and colours

Another view of Sarah Murdoch's dress. It's divine. It would be perfect for your event OP.

My vaguely similar one has been worn on around 20 "dressy" occasions since I bought it.

On the other hand this sorry collection were also at the Murdoch/ Hall nuptials- what the hell were they thinking of?
(It's Suzanne Acosta, Bill Wyman, Jeanne Marine and Bob Geldof)

Thank you - the replies confirm my suspicions, that I should aim for something dark / jewel-toned and go for formal but I don’t think floor length. That dress Sarah Murdoch has on is indeed gorgeous.

Oh mine too. I would go to a Murdock wedding if it meant I could wear a dress like that. I might even consider marrying Rupert.

Floisme · 18/09/2024 07:26

Murdoch.

Dressy means cocktail or full length dress but think silky shiny rather than matt cotton/linen generally and shaped rather than these baggy dresses people wear (prairie?)

This in green is what my dd has just bought. Monsoon sale has a few options that fit the requirements

mitogoshigg · 18/09/2024 07:35

@Defiantlynot41

They are definitely not glam or dressy, look like something my aunt would have worn. I don't get modern fashion (don't get me started on the awful unflattering prairie dresses.)

TheActualAudacity · 18/09/2024 14:48

Sarah Murdoch’s dress has always been my favourite ever wedding guest dress. It’s beautiful. The best example of a dress for a London private members club wedding on the thread.

Verite1 · 18/09/2024 15:00

I would go more towards cocktail (in the modern sense) rather than either wedding day wear or black tie. I also agree the Sarah Murdock dress is fabulous. I would go shopping in Selfridges for a dress if I didn’t have anything that fit the bill. Have fun!

JC03745 · 18/09/2024 15:06

I too would go either cocktail style, or possibly full length. If they wanted black tie, they would have said that. Is there anyone else going that you know and can compare ideas?
DH would always wears a tie/suit to a wedding- unless it stated black tie, or was literally on a sandy beach in Thailand 😄

I think that colour and fabric is too "day". The satin Reiss dress posted below is better.

I would go glam/evening but not necessarily full-length, although if the dress you like is full-length, go for it.

This one is stunning and would fit the brief perfectly.

Monket · 18/09/2024 17:37

Green doesn’t suit me, and I have way too much navy in my wardrobe… but I’ll have a look. I prefer to go in person if possible. 5’4”, dark blonde, was a size 10 but recently had DC3 so… flabby 10, ha. Maybe 12.

I'm imagining the dress in deep mulberry/ fuschia Nicole Kidman wore for the book launch in the Perfect Couple
