“Dressy” dress code

Been invited to celebrate a wedding at a private members’ club in London in November. Drinks and canapés, and dress code for women states “dressy”.

What do we think? Floor length? Cocktail dress? Men are in suits and ties.

Boodles is smart and pretty conservative. But that doesn't mean all the guests will be.

I would probably avoid anything too outre or too polyester from Coast.

sweetpickle2 · 20/09/2024 11:04

Boodle's is conservative, but I think events are different to just every day (they allow women in for a start). I wouldn't worry about being too outre judging by the pictures in the link I posted- bright pink dresses, oversized checked suits, anything goes.

Incredible! Thanks so much. I was shocked at the guest who wore a very bridal jumpsuit, until I realised it was the bride herself, who had changed outfit 🙄

Well, I will have a shop around and see what I can find.

I suggest having a look at Jasper Conran's dresses - they are made for this sort of event IMO.

hmm...sorry the link is to the yellow photo, but this comes in a few colours.

Can people not be ghastly cunts about suburban golf clubs etc. Says more about the person gazing down on the masses than the people enjoying their fabulous outfits and loving life.

The Jasper Conan dresses are beautiful and such pretty colours.
I wore the cobalt shirt dress to Glyndebourne this summer and it felt lovely to wear.

Monket · 20/09/2024 15:58

The Jasper Conran one feels very “safe” to me.

As PPs have said Boodles is the conservative end of clubland. If you think about what guests wear to Royal wedding ceremonies, minus the hats, you'll have a pretty good feel for what to wear. Think Amal Clooney at H&Ms for example. Clubs are usually well heated (too much so often) so cover your arms if you want to but don't worry about the cold. I think this would be stunning so long as you can keep the sleeves out of the canapes https://www.reiss.com/style/SU162376/Q83394?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwurS3BhCGARIsADdUH50sawIP8XNnXKIT2241gLTHKUwx4dGt8ZiVh81AKZYLhGvw729xz_8aAgR3EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#Q83394

The silk Jasper Conrans are lovely and there are bound to be guests in the formal end of Me and Em. Ghost might be worth a look if you have the right shape for it https://www.johnlewis.com/ghost-frankie-cowl-neck-maxi-dress/red/p110972385

If you can get to a shopping centre that has a fair amount of the higher end high street - Reiss, Hobbs, LK Bennett, Massimo Dutti you should be able to find something. Plain colours are probably going to look better than florals.

Do double check the club's footwear code as some can be really weird - one bans women's open toe shoes unless they have a heel for example and the doormen will be really sniffy if you turn up in trainers intending to change into formal shoes in the loo.....

@sweetpickle2 given how judgy you were about other people's suggestions, I was quite surprised to see how cheap and unstylish (I don't like to say chavvy because it's such an awful word) all of your Coast suggestions were. I hope you wouldn't wear those dresses, especially the first horrible shiny pink one, to anything nice because people would judge. Being 60 I think I prefer the lovelier fabrics and styles other posters recommended.

The Jasper Conran one feels very “safe” to me.

Yes - it's cotton so you'd need to make sure that your hair nails jewels shoes were amazing. That said, you would be very comfortable and could look a million dollars. Hard to say without fitting it on.

it’d be easier for posters not to be ghastly cunts if the dresses were less hideous.

There is nothing “fabulous” about this absolute monstrosity
