Do people actually wear these outfits?

I’m seeing lots of “autumn outfits” on social media like the attached eg a mini skirt with knee high boots. Generally no tights.

how do people pull this off?

I’m in my 20s and with toned legs, but feel like a mini skirt and knee high boots are like opposing seasons and it doesn’t look right on me. Eg it felt “too hot” to wear an outfit like that during summer due to the massive boots, yet “too cold” to wear an outfit like that now due to the skirts being super short. I also just feel like I’m not sure where I’d wear this to, the combination seems too dressy for daytime but too casual for nights out!

generally I have a hard time styling boots like this - is it certain items/fits that work best together? I’m short which doesn’t help.

I have this for instance

Hardly a teen outfit!

@mitogoshigg but I don’t think knee highs with that skirt you linked is anything like some of the outfits the OP posted?

I used to wear outfits like this until my mid 20s. I used to go for style over comfort or warmth! Now in my early 30s I like to wear clothes as big and long as possible so no one can even guess what shape my legs are. My body looks relatively the same but now I value comfort and warmth over style!

AliceMcK · 21/09/2024 11:24

Looks similar to what I use to wear when I was younger.

I saw an ad a few years ago for leggings that look like sheer tights but they have a skin coloured thermal legging layer for warmth - I can’t remember the brand but maybe they are wearing something like that!

This is perfect weather for that kind of look although with bare legs I tend to go for cowboy boots rather than knee highs. Today I’m wearing a shirt summer dress with sleeves with cowboy boots and a lightweight biker jacket.

I find boots and platform shoes the only heels I've ever been able to get on with.

henlake7 · 21/09/2024 11:37

I think bare legs is just a hard look to pull off if you are older, you either need great legs or plenty of self confidence (ideally both!).
Im over 50 with not so great legs so stick with mid thigh length skirts and black tights....although TBH Im more likely to wear a maxi and then my legs can be as bare (or hairy) as Ilike!LOL

A lot of the younger women are wearing barely there tights or those flesh coloured ones with fleece in, my dd does in winter.

Otherwise baggy top, short mini, boots- it's a lovely look for that age group.

I prefer to adapt it to slightly longer mini (no butt cheeks), tights, below knee high flat boots. I still like the overall vibe though, I am so over midi length but I have been for a long time.

I'm mid forties, tall with quite good legs and really like this look.

I wore tweed wool shorts yesterday with long boots, bare legs, a black silk vest and a cashmere camel sweater over the shoulders yesterday. Works really well for this transitional period between end of summer and early autumn.

Take a look at Sezane for some great inspiration that's not aimed at purely twenty somethings.

I wore this look to death in my late teens/early 20s with black 20 denier tights or opaques. M&S used to do this black stretch pull on mini skirt for about £15 and I had 3 that I wore on rotation with all sorts of tops and jumpers. I used to wear the look with Levi’s shorts as well. Oh to be 22 and eight stone again!

I'm in my 30s and not letting go of this yet. I still feel good in it. Age is but a number

So many of the boots make your legs look like oil drums! A boot that tapers in above the swell of calf muscles is much smoother look. IMHO.

Ahhh I’m just catching up on all the replies!

I have a night out in a couple of weeks and a friend’s baby shower at the end of next month, so might try and order an outfit like this for one of those.

I guess I’m struggling with the boots because I’m short. Do I go for taller or shorter boots? Heels or no heels? I’m not sure what my budget is either as happy to pay for quality but I also don’t know if I’ll get much use!

Short-ish dress, tights and ankle boots is a look that works for a lot of people. I would think at this time of year I might feel a bit hot in long boots once I go indoors.

I'm short too, I have flat boots to the knee, and high heeled boots that come to above the knee

Because they’re young and fit (and freezing). I used to wear outfits like that, years ago when I was size 8.
Even at 35 I was only a 10 and going to spin 5 x a week. I could’ve but I didn’t.
At 47 I would love to, so cool, (I’m peri) but I’m too big now.

JMAngel1 · 27/09/2024 18:09

I’m wearing a thigh high split midi leather skirt today with heeled suede knee high ruched boots. So part of one leg is on show. I wouldn’t do a full on mini though - looks a bit too 60s/70s style for me. Although I do remember wearing it in the 90s too so maybe it’s 90s too!

BedtimeCurtains · 27/09/2024 18:19

I used to wear mini skirt/tights/knee high boots when I was younger. Wouldn't with bare legs. But there look to be tights in those pics.
