Please help my sanity and save our relationship. We're going to a wedding in a couple of months.

Basically DD likes anything short and tight which I have vetoed as is not wedding appropriate. Everything she has picked out looks more suited to a nightclub.

She has now gone full flounce and suggesting she wears either a cardboard box or something out of pride and prejudice.

Please can you find something that will satisfy us both. She is slim build 5 ft 5 and it can't be green as that is bridesmaids colour.

Pride and Prejudice sounds like a good look to me!

Is there anything she has suggested that is less unsuitable than the others? Anything you can find something positive to say? Even if it's just liking the colour or a feature of the dress. Perhaps look at some brands she favours and see what else they have.

We took dd, who was 15 last year to quite a formal family wedding. She wanted to wear something long for the day and change for the evening. This could be a good compromise perhaps for your dd. This is what she wore. We bought the PLT dress off vinted. For reference she’s about 5’6 and slim build.

Day with a cream jacket. https://www.quizclothing.co.uk/en-GB/aqua-satin-cross-back-maxi-dress-p-177531 (I had to pinch the bust fabric together with a little hand stitch under the arms as the bust was too big).

Evening, a lot less revealing btw on the split than those pictures appear. When it came, I would have been ok for her to have worn it with a jacket in the day. Quiz have something similar if you look at their website. https://www.prettylittlething.com/multi-marble-print-satin-ruched-skirt-corset-detail-midi-dress.html

I do understand what you mean about short. Dd went to London with friends the other day. Her dress was so short I had to tell her to pull it down as you could see the bottom of her bum cheek!

edit - if you have a quiz nearby perhaps you could take your dd along to one. This is what I did with dd.

Thanks. Some good ideas about looking for the middle ground. She keeps finding dresses that are bodycon and only just cover your buttocks. I'm not ok with her going out like this and especially not to a wedding. Mid thigh and below I'm ok with.

I think the backless / strapped back dresses could be an idea that appeals to her. Also hadn't thought of jumpsuits but that might be an option.

I will show her the links and see what she thinks. Thanks

Nothing useful to say, except that I am
old and don’t understand kids today. When I was 14 the look was “dress like a boy in baggy jeans and the biggest black Tshirt available so that no one notices you’ve grown boobs”. I would have DIED if someone had suggested a bodycon dress.

Rocknrollstar · 02/09/2024 09:30

Every event I’ve been to in the last three years has had 14 yr olds in short, tight dresses. I remember my dad being angry that I bought a mini dress for a wedding.

Rory17384949 · 02/09/2024 10:05

I would look for a compromise- bodycon is ok but not extremely short for example. Or backless but long and not super tight.
She needs to look appropriate for a wedding.
My DD got a long strapless bodycon dress to go on holiday, something like that maybe?

Or if she wants short there's a lot of empire line regency style dresses around that would look ok short because they're loose fitting

Illpickthatup · 02/09/2024 10:35

Have you tried Oh Polly? Most of the their dresses are body con. There are a few midi and maxi dresses that might hit the spot with your DD.

She will probably like it because Molly Mae wore it.

Also she can wear flats underneath.

MiddleAgedDread · 02/09/2024 11:01

DSD13 is currently sporting a flowery number from Hollister for formal occassions - it's got a tie back and could be worn off-shoulder but she tends to keep it over the shoulder.

DeepfriedPizza · 02/09/2024 11:04

I completely sympathise as we are in the same boat. DD will be 15 at time of wedding and she wants to dress like Sabrina Carpenter doing a show.

I've just realised you said no green so my post was entirely unhelpful, sorry

Moveoverdarlin · 02/09/2024 11:09

Could she not wear a high neck, short, tight black (or autumnal colour like maroon, burgundy) sequin dress with long sleeves BUT with black tights. Surely that’s ok? Whilst it’s short and tight, it’s actually showing very little flesh. If it’s a few months time I assume it’s November, some of these pastel flouncy dresses being suggested are far too summery

Moveoverdarlin · 02/09/2024 11:17

Like this type of thing, but compromise on black tights.

DD 15 was at a wedding this summer. We got two options for her both from Amazon of all places. They were long but gave a lot of options on how to wear it and came up longer than the photo and we put hoops to hold the shoulders up on her bra. Both came in a lot of colours. In the end she went for the second one with some new converse, and the first was used for a school dance and looked great with DM's.

Can you post something that she wanted to wear so we can see her vibe and come up with ideas?

Petal7 · 02/09/2024 14:00

Have you tried Hollister? My dd have worn dresses from there to weddings recently.

Delphiniumandlupins · 02/09/2024 14:09

Don't show her links to clothes that also come in children's sizes, however pretty or suitable they are. All she's going to see is a 10 year old's dress.

jaimelesoleil · 02/09/2024 14:51

We just had several teenagers at a wedding and they all looked lovely.
Some of the dresses came from Hollister. Probably out of season for you but they might have something lovely for your DD.
