Please help my sanity and save our relationship. We're going to a wedding in a couple of months.

Basically DD likes anything short and tight which I have vetoed as is not wedding appropriate. Everything she has picked out looks more suited to a nightclub.

She has now gone full flounce and suggesting she wears either a cardboard box or something out of pride and prejudice.

Please can you find something that will satisfy us both. She is slim build 5 ft 5 and it can't be green as that is bridesmaids colour.

so I am much shorter that your DD but I often only wear short skirts and dresses because I am so short and wearing maxis just makes me look silly. When I need something more suitable and formal I opt for a high/low dress, long a the back and either shorter at the front a side.

I am not suggesting this actual dress but this the type of thing I mean Formal Dresses Follow Me High-Low Floral Layered Gown Maxi Dress For Wedding Vacation (shopcider.com)

this is poss too much for a 14 yo but you get the idea

Have a look on asos for something floral or similar. Not black, dont wear black to a wedding

Sallyh87 · 02/09/2024 17:13

Buy her an Elizabeth Bennett costume and call her bluff?

Lilactimes · 02/09/2024 17:29

Hi - I feel your pain.

I reckon there is a lot of choice here

My 14 year old niece wore this to my wedding over the summer, maybe compromise with a longer dress but with cardi or bolero jacket?

My dd has this in green but plenty of colours available. It is very short but because it has a skort it's very secure

Could she wear a bodycon dress with a jacket over the top? There might be a jacket that would be a compromise of sorts. I would look at plt. Recently my daughter chose a long slim maxi skirt with a split up, and a boob tube top, I think if you put a jacket over that sort of style, and some heels, it would look smart enough.

Do you have a specific budget limit, I hope you don’t mind me asking ? If she likes brands (I don’t mean Dior types Ha, for instance several PP have mentioned Hollister, which depends on the teen whether they love or hate really - although the dresses look tiny, their models to tend to be super tall though, so it could be a good try), might be worth negotiating buying a ‘favorite brand’ (and compromise!) dress that she’ll be able to use in the future, could take away from the focus on the wedding, like ‘this is your opportunity to get a nice dress you like, these are my non negotiables’. There should be many options really

Have a look at shein co ord section for long skirt/ body con top type set, in a colour like mocha or royal blue, compromise on a jacket to go over the top, heels bag and hair done. Minimal make up and small jewellery.

My DD, 15, wore this in the flowery blue to a wedding recently. She's only 5ft and petite so the length was quite respectable.

Nothing useful to say, except that I am
old and don’t understand kids today. When I was 14 the look was “dress like a boy in baggy jeans and the biggest black Tshirt available so that no one notices you’ve grown boobs”. I would have DIED if someone had suggested a bodycon dress.

I agree with you. I was a size 6-8 (but they rarely had those sizes only petite older women ranges. I had boobs too. My thighs, hips I thought were huge (they were nothing of the sort). I’m sure I wore an 80s floral Laura Ashley to a family friends blended family wedding. They’re divorced now…

Could it be that she consider this as her opportunity to get herself a nice “party dress “ ? Reassure her that it will be something for family occasions and that you will buy her a nice party dress of her choice for other events.

My nieces both ended up independently wearing quiz dresses to a family wedding we went to earlier in the year - having a look now the mini dresses are probably a bit shorter than you'd want but there are some nice midi dresses that should hopefully work for both of you.

Alternatively for something very different, popsy has some fun dresses that also look comfy to wear... for example if she likes Harry Potter/wizarding, there's a tulip shaped dress that might work as something completely different...

Just let her wear what she wants. No one decent will judge a 14yo's style anyway

Oh dear God. That wizard spell dress - I’m 71 and wouldn’t wear that. It’s hideous.
