Another wedding outfit crisis - dark brown and "retro" please!

Yes, my sister's wedding colour scheme is... dark brown. I need a dark brown, knee-length or longer dress that is, ideally, retro. I would scour 2nd-hand shops but don't have time and anyway there's very little chance of finding what I need in a 14/16. I would be able to make a simple dress (eg a bias-cut linen shift) but not sure how I would make one that looked vintage-y.

Does anyone know of an affordable dress out there - or even an expensive one if I could copy and make it?

Oh and if you suspect you may be one of the other bridesmaids (I know at least one of them is a mum) - help meeeeeee... what are you going to wear?

what do you mean the colour scheme is dark brown? are brides now dictating what guests wear?

omfg

or are you one of the bridesmaids

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:19

It's not a super-formal wedding but yes, basically I'm a bridesmaid, or one of several "helpers" - including DS - who will be up at the front. Not everyone has to wear brown - although I have heard that at some weddings people do actually set a colour scheme for everyone...

So we're not all being given identical matching kit, but are being asked to wear matching colours.

I've just seen this which I love, but it's too short (I don't do bare knees and also they have asked for knee-length or longer)

Would a longer version of that look nice... or has anyone seen anything similar?

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:25

Wow laidback, those are more evening-y than I had imagined, but they're beautiful - thanks. I'll print them all out and perhaps be able to come up with a hybrid/easy to make design.

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:27

I've never been a bridesmaid before... I haven't a clue

wap dress

Tutter · 18/04/2008 10:32

has she asked for retro?

if not, maybe stick to something MOR?

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:33

Thanks naily & badger too.... I'm liking the shorter, knee-length look but without the floppy sleeves (for some reason they look bobbins on me) - probably going for shift-style top half.

Badger your no 2 is fabulous - would upstage the couple! Makes me think of a cadbury's flake too.

OP posts:
Tutter · 18/04/2008 10:33

spotty and summery

Tutter · 18/04/2008 10:34

quite purty

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:34

Yes she has asked for retro and I think needs to be solid choc brown not a pattern.

OP posts:
FYIAD · 18/04/2008 10:34

mine wore short chocolate brown shifts with belts and fur jackets

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:34

And if I could make it in linen or cotton I'd be very happy.
