Another wedding outfit crisis - dark brown and "retro" please!

Yes, my sister's wedding colour scheme is... dark brown. I need a dark brown, knee-length or longer dress that is, ideally, retro. I would scour 2nd-hand shops but don't have time and anyway there's very little chance of finding what I need in a 14/16. I would be able to make a simple dress (eg a bias-cut linen shift) but not sure how I would make one that looked vintage-y.

Does anyone know of an affordable dress out there - or even an expensive one if I could copy and make it?

I love choc brown - bit odd for a wedding but I'm hoping I can end up with a dress that I'll get a lot of wear out of - that's partly why I probably won't go for anything super-formal or shiny.

Tutter I love that lacy/bobbly look - that dress will be too short and daintiness would be ruined by my galumphing knees hanging out the bottom, but that general feel would be perfect. Am now inspired to see if I can find some fabric like that...

I wore very pale mink silk long dress and cream jacket

hence chocolate brown and fur bridesmaids (was in winter)

could you use it as a pattern to amke in a diff fabric? seems a simple shape...

I think that this is gorgeous and the silk stops the dark brown from looking a bit too (ahem) dull.

Ebay has a couple of dark brown halter neck dresses from Coast - they are trimmed with ivory, with an ivory sash - not sure if they fit the 'vintage' look - but still look v nice and could be flattering???

Do you know what naily - I have the first dress on that link - I splashed out on it earlier in the year, for the upcoming wedding season and planned to wear it for this wedding, until I got the dress code. Should take it back because it cost a bomb but I love it so much and it will do for occasions, holidays and everyday (if we get a summer).

I could make that same pattern in brown linen though - would that be too boring.

Were you thinking of no 4 on the link though? that's lovely - but not sure if I could make it.

Thanks everyone else too - I'm taking it all in...

it woulndnt be boring if you had a plain dress with some accessories or added a really lovely belt or a collar or something?
