What’s the most soothing thing to put on my face?

Away at the moment and have either managed to sunburn my face (despite careful spf 50 use), it’s also been really windy so that might not have helped, or I’ve used some product that my skin hates.

Skin on cheeks, forehead and chin has gone very red, started breaking out and stings like hell whenever I try to put anything on it even the most gentle stuff. Think I’ve damaged the skin barrier. I have a ‘barrier balm’ I’ve been using but it’s doing nothing and still stings.

Heading home tomorrow - what’s the best thing I can do to try to restore my face to some kind of normality. I already have the Roche effaclar cleansing lotion which I’ve used before when I had a lot of irritation and it was very gentle and good. I feel like my skin needs an absolute boat load of moisture though but I don’t know what, if anything, I should use without doing more damage. Any ideas?

Pure aloe vera gel - keep in fridge for cool touch.

Plain yogurt

Avene extremely gentle cleanser, mineral spray and avene tolerance balm are my go tos. I use their cream factor 50 sunscreen too. The fluid is fine but the cream is more moisturising. The tolerance cream is fine too but the balm is also more moisturising. Boots sometimes have offers on, or Look Fantastic, or similar websites.

Banana boat Aloe Vera gel.I walked in hot tar when my flip flops got stuck, and it really did soothe my poor feet.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 31/08/2024 12:29

Cold black tea.

Jewel1968 · 31/08/2024 12:33

I was going to suggest sudocreme but you can't go out with that on your face. Might be handy at night.

rowanrome · 31/08/2024 13:08

Balneum cream. I get it because my skin doesn't like the sun very much, it sometimes blisters. It was recommended by my dermatologist to replace lost moisture and to soothe the skin.

Stirmish · 31/08/2024 13:10

Vaseline

mynameiscalypso · 31/08/2024 13:12

I use epaderm when my face gets like this.

learieonthewildmoor · 31/08/2024 13:28

Don’t use Vaseline, the oil will block the heat in. Look for something oil free like Clinique moisture surge 100 hrs.

That's not true at all

Vaseline works brilliantly on very sore skin

Mamma283828 · 31/08/2024 17:26

I found Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream used to help me with small burns.

Mamma283828 · 31/08/2024 17:27

But cold Aloe Vera will probably feel better.

Witsend2023 · 31/08/2024 19:01

La Roche posay cicaplast balm is so good on any sore skin

BashfulClam · 31/08/2024 19:03

I had this kind of reaction when I used a soap on my face. Witch hazel dabbed on really helped.,

SuperbOwls · 31/08/2024 19:06

CeraVe advanced repair ointment is great and does the trick every time. Greasy though. One for night time!

AgileGreenSeal · 31/08/2024 19:07

I had very sore red eyelids and evee ed n prescription meds didn’t help much but using Balmond’s SkinSalvation from Holland & Barrett made all the difference. I still use it about one a week as an all-over face mask when going to bed and my skin feels great in the morning.

AngryLikeHades · 31/08/2024 19:08

Moo Goo full cream moisturiser. Very gentle and wash it with Moo Goo milk wash which is very gentle. I use them both.

Aquaphor soothing skin balm . My sister was recommended it when she had a facial chemical peel which left her looking like the Singing Detective and I use it when I've been a bit heavy handed with retinol.

Avene Cicalfate is a lifesaver for sore, irritated skin. I use it if I’ve accidentally annoyed my skin barrier with too many active ingredients or if I’ve caught a bit too much sun. Genuinely cures it overnight - miracle stuff that has so many other uses. I always keep a big tube in the house.

AliasGrape · 31/08/2024 19:34

Thanks all, some great ideas to try. I’m trying the yoghurt before my shower tonight, added a couple of suggestions to my Amazon basket for when I get home. The small chemist I was able to find didn’t have any aloe Vera gel but I’ll definitely try some other places in the morning before heading home!

Yoghurt is the thing here for sure.
If you can find some runny raw honey so it's easy to apply and doesn't stick too much as you apply so it doesn't hurt, that helps as well.
