Dress/smart casual clothing for funeral

RiftGibbon · 19/08/2024 21:15

I have a funeral to attend soon. Looks as though dress code may be smart casual as there will be a mix of ages present.
Looking for something a very short (4ft 11) dumpy size 14 middle aged woman can wear to this but then possibly wear again.
Just past knee length would be ideal and scoop neck with sleeves preferable but not essential.
Doesn't have to be black but dark coloured would be good.
Budget £50 tops.
Any suggestions please?

Sorry out of stock

Anything but the & other stories, that's completely inappropriate.

This would be appropriate based on the dresses people where typically, I organise funerals, otherwise plain jersey black or navy

I wear this typically

Hmm … This isn’t the right thread for an argument but I can assure you the lacy dress I linked would have been perfectly ‘appropriate’ at any of my family’s funerals over the past thirty years.

Perhaps a different culture pertains at those you’re concerned with, @mitogoshi? At ours, people ‘dress up’ to honour the deceased. Most people would be in traditional robes, those in ‘western’ clothes would be expected to turn up in something considerably more elevated than ‘smart casual’.

heldinadream · 20/08/2024 20:33

I really like the other stories dress and given that OP is only 4ft 11 I imagine it'll be knee length on her and look smart and sophisticated rather than racy, as it might look on someone 6ft, or model height kind of height.

RiftGibbon · 20/08/2024 20:42

I like the Roman ones, and the one from Amazon. They seem like a good starting point.
I think a few of the others, whilst great on someone taller and/or willow would either swamp me or make me look like a (sombre)Christmas decoration.
Please keep suggestions coming. Dark grey, navy and dark green would be my better colours, and I'm not a massive fan of patterns but I won't rule them out.

A mini dress doesn't seem suitable for a funeral.

What would be a mini dress on someone of average height would be knee length (at least) on me.

I once wore a red dress with a navy blazer to a funeral, it was perfectly appropriate to the person whose funeral it was (she would have loved the bright colour). I wouldn't wear mini dresses or anything too casual and that lace dress is far too holiday vibes for a funeral.

I have a simple black, long sleeved, knee length jumper dress that I tend to wear to funerals. I either put on heels or flats, then my smart coat if its cold.

Next have some

This is nice. Smart casual and will go with other things later.

piccolorhinoceros · 21/08/2024 11:17

Sorry for your loss. I think it's useful to have a funeral dress in your wardrobe, unfortunately. Often once I've worn something to a funeral I don't want to wear it socially or to work again. I'd get something like this

It really doesn't matter how nice someone looks at a funeral, you just need something appropriate and respectful. This fits the bill.

Pair of black trousers, possibly linen, black or white top.

Mum2threexx · 21/08/2024 18:56

I am a size 14 bit taller but recently brought a shirt dress from boohoo (cost £24) with a gold detail very smart/casual looking, have a look on boohoo

RiftGibbon · 27/08/2024 13:09

I ended up buying a shorter version of this dress which comes past my knees.

Just unsure what to wear with it. I don't have any formal shoes at present. Do I need a blazer or jacket or something? Also dark or a different colour?

TheOriginalFrench · 27/08/2024 13:17

That looks lovely.

Do you have any footwear that isn’t trainers or wellies?

I’d say you’ll only need another layer if the temperature demands it. Or if you feel a bit exposed and want something to be wrapped in. Your dress is more than adequate in terms of formality.

RiftGibbon · 27/08/2024 20:47

Re footwear- I have winter boots, hiking boots or flip flops (ruined my trainers a while back).
Maybe a low wedge?
