They’re constantly being recommended on here, for larger sizes.. but I never see this in real life, and would look like a zeppelin.

Extra points if linen or a wrap or jacket is mentioned

I've literally been called to sit on an in person public enquiry and was sat wondering if my shift dresses still fit. And this thread came up.

So me I guess.

natalienewname · 16/08/2024 19:57

I have one that I wear with tights and a jumper in winter. It’s a bit short for summer and is a 1960s style.

HeddaGarbled · 16/08/2024 19:59

I saw a (young, slim) woman out today in a lovely bright orange shift dress and she looked fab.

GoldenPineapple15 · 16/08/2024 20:04

Me ! Have at least 4 and love them .

Doggymummar · 16/08/2024 20:06

I have woollen ones for winter, not in Summer tho

InTheRainOnATrain · 16/08/2024 20:06

The only shift dress I own is a fruity sequin number worn to my 6th form leavers ball. The dry cleaner did a fabulous job of getting the blue wkd stains out. Pretty sure it wouldn’t zip up now but I keep it for the #memories

You are asking on Mumsnet who apart from Mumsnet people where shift dresses.... we can hardly give you the answer. I know plenty of people that wear, but I've no idea if they are on here or not! Yes I wear them, more in winter with tights and boots than summer!

JaneJeffer · 16/08/2024 20:15

I have never seen anyone recommend a shift dress on here. It's usually big puffy things.

PleasantValleySunday · 16/08/2024 20:18

I wear mini shift style dresses. I guess they're a bit 1960s in style. They're not linen or wrap, and I'm not a larger person, I'm size 10 and shortish.

I know they're not really in fashion at the moment but they suit me and my style. I don't suit the midi or maxi dresses that everyone else is wearing.

WickieRoy · 16/08/2024 20:22

I used to love a shift dress when I was slimmer, I'd wear them now (especially for work in the winter with tights and boots) but alas a couple of babies and a couple of stone later and they look awful.

I don't see many women wearing them, but I think they're useful for work wear and can be very stylish (thinking of one friend in particular).

What exactly is a shift dress? Must admit my fashion knowledge is deplorable

I always thought a shift dress was the figure hugging ones ...like a tshirt dress type thing or those dairy maid dresses tic tock is daft for just now.

MsNeis · 16/08/2024 20:27

@Lifelover16 haha! I just googled it 🤭

Josette77 · 16/08/2024 20:36

Icons where them. I do too sometimes. They are classic. If they were good enough for Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn, they are good enough for me.

Dearg · 16/08/2024 20:48

Love a shift dress. And yes I have one in linen. I am a size 8-10, 5’5” so quite short. My basic shape is failed athletic - so boxy with no discernible waist.
They are all knee length or mini. They are sooo much nicer than the wrap dresses which I used to wear

The type Jackie Kennedy used to wear. Sleeveless and just above knee length. Structured.

EwwSprouts · 16/08/2024 20:57

I had a very similar navy version which I used to wear for work. Lined & came to just below the knee. I'm a short size 18 and the style is flattering. I think you have to have a defined waist.

mdinbc · 16/08/2024 20:58

I do. They suit me. I don't think they ever go out of style.

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 16/08/2024 21:11

I like them but do look too safe and simple for todays trends. It's mostly fugly boxy things that seem to be in fashion and mix match styling
Hopefully the shift dress will be able to be styled differently in winter to look a bit edgy.

Fairyliz · 16/08/2024 21:13

I love them, much more grown up than the Bavarian milkmaid look that was popular.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/08/2024 21:14

Love a shift dress. Sorry. So shoot me 🤷‍♀️

GreatDarkWing · 16/08/2024 21:18

I'm petite and quite straight-figured, so they suit me, I think. I have a red, wool tartan one which I wear with a black poloneck underneath, with black tights and boots. (In cold weather, obviously.) It's definitely not fashionable but to my mind it's stylish in a retro sort of way.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 16/08/2024 21:20

Lots of women I work with wear them, but not larger ladies, they don’t really suit anyone with a big belly.

At least the 50s style dresses have stopped being recommended for all plus sized women now.

BusySittingDown · 16/08/2024 21:22

One of my best friends always wears a shift dress. She's slim and looks nice in them.

I've never worn one though.

DrinkElephants · 16/08/2024 21:23

I like a shift dress. They’re kinda fitted but also a bit loose for if I’m feeling a bit bloated that day.
