They’re constantly being recommended on here, for larger sizes.. but I never see this in real life, and would look like a zeppelin.

Extra points if linen or a wrap or jacket is mentioned

Can we have some examples please?

These are two of my most recently bought/most worn ones. Dressed up or down.

I wear them. I am small busted and have good legs. They look better on me than the puff sleeved monstrosities with yards and yards of material.

For those who wear them in the winter, do you then have to wear a cardigan over it?

I can’t imagine that looking very nice on anyone unless you’re a supermodel.

I haven't got shift dresses, but no you don't have to be a supermodel to wear one with a cardigan.

General aside-the "only look good on a supermodel" trope, which seems to be applied to almost everything is boring and over done and wrong.

Google "Princess Diana shift dress"

I actually think they look better on short people rather than Amazons! They have a gamine 1960s vibe.

Lentilweaver · 16/08/2024 23:32

Mine aren't as clingy as the Princess Di ones. What I like about them is that the waistline isn't right under my bust. Which is the problem with all the more fashiony dresses.

RenoDakota · 16/08/2024 23:43

I love a shift dress and they look good on me (size 12). I have three linen ones, all in different colours/patterns, from Next. They are practically my summer wardrobe.

I really like these! Especially the one on the left.

The tank top shape is unflattering on my arms in reality so I don’t wear them. But I like them.

You're getting plenty of different takes - and they're all shifts! Here's mine, courtesy of Nobody's Child.

Whenever I hear shift dress I think of the rails of them that they have in Next every summer - same shape, various patterns. There was a woman in our holiday hotel once and I think she had a whole suitcase of them. I don't like them.

I lovedddd my shift dresses. Then I became too busty for them and they fit weird. It was my go to in my 20s - love them but I admit that they fit a particular body type (I can say that because I got to a point where I could no longer get in and out of mine and when it was on the darts didn’t fit in the right places and the length stopped working for me).

DreamTheMoors · 17/08/2024 01:18

My Nana and her sisters all wore the 1900’s versions of the shift dress. They were born in the 1880s & ‘90s.
I never saw them in anything else until my grandparents started going to the mountains and Nana started wearing pants.
Wear what you want.
Be what you want.
Do what you want.
Think what you want.
Say what you want.
But don’t shame another woman when she does the same.
Christ almighty we’ve climbed too far to slide all the way back down.

mouseyowl · 17/08/2024 01:22

Politicians and the like always seem to wear them, I guess because they are tailored and not 'girlie'

To the poster going to a select committee in one, definitely on brand!

I have arms like a quarterback

Shift dressing I ain't

coxesorangepippin · 17/08/2024 01:24

Diana wore them well

(Like most stuff)

Justkoko · 17/08/2024 01:44

@PerkyMintDeer this is just the shape a shift dress should be, and they are lovely. Tailored to the waist and usually above knee. Structured and flattering.
@sausawyee I see those dresses more as trapeze shape. I know they get sold every year as a shift but without the waist shaping I just think it's a different dress.

Love a heavier fabric shift in the winter with opaque tights. Love clothes that have a little structure. As pps have mentioned, so much stuff in the shops is so baggy and long.

MonsteraMama · 17/08/2024 02:00

They don't suit me, they make me look like a linebacker in drag.

Plenty of women look fab in them though.

Inlaw · 17/08/2024 02:24

Love them!

tribalmango · 17/08/2024 03:53

I'm tall and slim and have a deep red linen shift which is fab for warm days as it's loose. It IS rather shapeless and not really the best style for me (makes it look like I'm hiding my body) but I don't mind.

SecretWitch · 17/08/2024 04:44

Loved them when I was much thinner. Now I stick to long and flowy in the summer.

Caspianberg · 17/08/2024 04:58

I have one I wore yesterday. It’s about 20 years old, and just a simply light blue linen. It’s looser and casual, not super fitted. It’s my beach or summer pottering around the garden dress.

it’s a bit like this picture but minus the fancy embroidery

I look GREAT in a shift dress but haven’t had one for ages. Think I might buy one after this thread!

There there Dear. We’ve noticed you. 😘

Mirakolo · 17/08/2024 06:56

Shift dresses are straight short dresses knee length or shorter. They don't suit plus size or "models" it's about the body shape than size. I think apples, broad shouldered and boyish/straight bodies look best in them. If you're curvy hourglass or pear with a small waist they can make you look bigger because they skimp over the tummy, great if you have a bit of a belly, but if your curvy losing the waist definition makes you look wider however sometimes that doesn't matter and you just fancy the elegance and ease of a shift dress, i suppose you coupd add a crossbody bag or waist belt for a bit of definition

I see all ages and shapes wearing shift dresses not just an work

Linen is a great fabric and jackets make sense in UK climate so I think this thread is unreasonable.
Are you under 30, op?

Josephinesnapoleon · 17/08/2024 07:24

I wear them also. I’m surprised at the question. They are fairly common and basic attire.
