Plus size interview outfit - where to start?

llamalines · 12/08/2024 00:25

I have an actual in-person interview coming up. I haven't had one of them in years!

I used to wear trousers suits to interviews, but when I was a bit slimmer. I'm size 24 now and it's really hard to find suits that suit

So, I think I need advice on what else I can wear up and interview. What would you wear?

I'm size 24, with a huge round tum!

Thanks for any help :)

Gosh, Rune looks great, @Heygal. One might wish they offered a few more items but presumably it’s still evolving? The clothes seem really cool. (In both senses.)

The other style I’ve seen slightly younger plus sized professional colleagues embrace is the Skims dress. They look fabulous in them, although the dresses didn’t raise much enthusiasm last time I mentioned them here. Don’t know if you’ve looked at them before, @llamalines? This one could work with a jacket:

Or this one with perhaps an ivory silk sleeveless shirt underneath:

Have a look at Lindy Bop. There are plenty on Vinted (i got one dress brand new with tags). They have a lot of very flattering styles and i have a few of their dresses for work which i wear with either cardy/blazer, tights and heels

EwwSprouts · 12/08/2024 21:53

I would go for something like this based on what you have said. https://www.monsoon.co.uk/mary-monochrome-floral-midi-shirt-dress-black-10002350001.html

BlindedByGrey · 12/08/2024 21:54

That monsoon dress is lovely @EwwSprouts

hohohowheniscmascoming · 12/08/2024 22:00

Live unlimited is my current favourite brand

What's your height? My thoughts are similar to above, but was thinking a smock dress rather than a wrap. With a jacket, either a blazer type or one the same length as your dress that can be worn open. Structured, though, not a knitted one.

The black one's only £16.50! There are some good contenders at ASOS:

That black dress would look appalling at an interview- far too short on anyone , particularly in a size 24.

Hideous and totally inappropriate.

Op, try Jolie Moi. Their dresses go up to a 28 and almost every style comes in different colours. I’m a size 20 and have quite a few of them.

There are some really nice things here.

Yeah, I couldn't see it properly in the picture 😳 I stand by Asos though, their curve offering has really improved.

MayonnaiseOnMyChips · 12/08/2024 22:15

I would go for a midi dress and a jacket over the top?
Good luck, keep us posted on what you wear 👍 xxxx

Ozanj · 12/08/2024 22:34

Uniqlo is where my boss (a size 24) shops. She’s super senior in a male dominated profession

iRatherLikeWombats · 13/08/2024 00:56

@AnnieMcFanny Oh, wow! I'd never heard of them and now I'm hooked! Thank you so much for recommending them to the OP 😁Thursday's my pay day and if they still have it available, I'm going to buy this from them and thank you every time I wear it!
Ruched Sleeve Print Jersey Midi Dress, Red Floral – Jolie Moi Retail

YellowAsteroid · 13/08/2024 07:14

I’d start with a really well fitted blazer style jacket. When I say fitted , I don’t mean into the waist but make sure it fits across the shoulders to give you a smart crisp top line. You might try going up a size. Nothing accentuates size more than something too small, whether you’re a size 10 or a size 20.

Then if you’re worried about your stomach, a straight shift style dress that falls to the mid-knee would work under the jacket. Again, don’t skimp on size - get something that sits well at the shoulder and just touches but doesn’t strain at your hips.

CurlewKate · 13/08/2024 09:50

@AndYesTheWeeDonkeys we have very different ideas of what Very Good Clothes look like!🤣

thinkfast · 13/08/2024 13:18

I'm your size OP and work in a professional environment. Since Covid, office wear is much less formal than previously.
I suggest you look at live unlimited, studio 8 (plus size version of phase 8) and simply be.

I'd wear something like this dress below, but I get my local dry cleaner to put some small shoulder pads in as it makes it a bit more office wear

liveunlimitedlondon.com/products/black-jersey-long-sleeve-shirt-dress

BlindedByGrey · 13/08/2024 15:23

That looks like a very useful dress @thinkfast and I’m nicking your shoulder pads tip for my workwear

GradGirl · 13/08/2024 15:35

Fabulous dress suggestion @thinkfast 🙏.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/08/2024 15:49

Marina Rinaldi looks great to me but I’d definitely wear shapewear like Spanx and M&S or somewhere do shapewear tights.

I’ve done this before and it definitely makes a difference to how you look.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/08/2024 15:53

The Liveunlimited dress does look nice which is why some of the Marina Rinaldii ones seem nicer and more memorable. I’ve found (when a lot slimmer) that a more colourful outfit (not too colourful) has edged the favour in my getting jobs.

BlindedByGrey · 13/08/2024 15:59

I think the marina rinaldi ones look quite old fashioned

MeinKraft · 13/08/2024 17:25

I have this dress, it's great for work and quite flattering for lumpy bits. www.popsyclothing.co.uk/collections/blouson-dresses/products/constance-grey-blouson-dress

AndYesTheWeeDonkeys · 13/08/2024 17:29

Yes, far too many of them are pretty awful, @BlindedByGrey. They never seem willing to commit fully to whichever source it is that provides clothes one might actually want to wear. I wish they’d burn all the polyester and round necked tunics.

But I like the blue cotton frock.
