If you are tall, what is your 'look'?

ViolaDace · 19/07/2024 14:36

By tall, I mean over 5ft 8....

Really struggling with my style post babies. I am very slim, size 8-10, but still have a bit of a flabby stomach and small (deflated boobs). I'm 37. I would probably be described as lanky by some and am very pale.

Recently hate all my clothes and how they look on me. Also feel like I've grown out of some of the 'looks' I used to like. I feel like my height (5ft 11) is a bit of barrier to looking good. In the oversized stuff which is trendy - or the Toast looks - I just look like an enormous tent pole in a tent. Equally more fussy/feminine stuff - see Sezane - can make me look a little odd. I used to love a lot of whistles stuff but now it seems to be overpriced polyester and is also usually too short.

Any tall women got any tips, preferred shops, preferred style inspiration?

Following with interest, as you sound a similar shape to me, (although I am a bit shorter at 5 9) and also struggle with my look.

One thing I can pull off pretty well is wide legged trousers, which I wear with a tucked in shirt/blouse. Do these work for you?

Intensiv14 · 19/07/2024 15:44

Wide legged trousers, fitted tops, flared /wide jeans, fit and flare dresses, maxi and midi lengths. Long jackets, slim on top on wider bottom suits me. I like quite a plain style, but good make up and jewellery.
anything fussy or short is a no for me.

AuntieMarys · 19/07/2024 15:49

I'm 6 feet and love a wide legged trouser.

ViolaDace · 19/07/2024 15:52

Thanks. I think wide leg can work for me but all my height is in my legs so can sometimes just look like too much leg swamped in fabric!

Also - where do you buy them long enough?!

Anything from Me+Em - the only retailer that I feel knows my shape and style!

Footbull · 19/07/2024 15:54

I'm not tall but I'd love to be and I'd go very poised Parisian look, navy, clean lines, no busy patterns.

Yes I actually think this might be the key. To go classic rather than fussy in any way.

Love some of Me & Em but it does sometimes go a little bit too quirky for me. It's also so expensive!!

I am tallish at 5'8 but also overweight

weekfour · 19/07/2024 15:58

Yep. Plain lines. No frills. No ruffles. No ridiculous pattern. I've got the added problem of being booby so I like a v Neck but I love a boat neck or anything a bit higher or other women.

CherryMaple · 19/07/2024 16:00

I’m 5ft 10. Next trousers in Long length are a good length on me. I’m heavier than you. I pretty much only wear wide leg trousers.

MinnieMountain · 19/07/2024 16:06

I wear single colour dresses which sit just above the knee. Typically from Uniqlo, second hand Boden tall, M&S or Monsoon. In the winter I add short corduroy skirts with plain black or navy tops and tights to that.

Admittedly not especially stylish, but it works for me (similar shape to you but a solid size 10 and 5ft 10).

Next, M&S long trousers. I’m 5’9 so not quite a tall.
Also yes to boat necks, slash necks, round neck t shirts.

SuperJune · 19/07/2024 16:09

I'm 5 10 and echo the love of a wide legged trouser! Although I do have a relatively large bust so I think a slim fit top plus wide legged trouser helps to balance things out.

I used to really want to wear bright patterns, frills, etc etc but I've realised it doesn't suit me and I don't feel my best in it. Instead clean lines and colours are my go to, plus some gold jewellery to jazz things up a tad. Recently I've been enjoying wide trousers plus an oversize top that is cropped to the waist, or jacket to the hip. I just make sure my wrists are visible so it doesn't look completely tent-like, but I like the willowy sort of effect (at least that's how I feel, perhaps it looks like a tent but I feel great!)

Bonus is that a lot of my clothes now tend to work with each other so it's a bit of a capsule wardrobe Smile

I also saw this brand advertised not just the jumpsuit

Classic, clean lines. No frills or flouncy stuff. Find the colours that suit you.
Next tall is brilliant and their returns is quick and easy so you can order quite a few bits and then send stuff back you don't want.

5.11" all in the leg and size 8-10, bet you look amazing!

You've just lost your way like you say after having a baby.

Bit of gradual tanner maybe? And good posture, shoulder back, chin high, walk with confidence.

I've always loved my height (5.10"). But I lost my way a bit after having kids. Just like you, needed to find a new style. You'll do it and feel good again

Thank you!

I am strangely attracted to all the prairie style dresses everyone is wearing....but I put them on and look like some kind of Victorian urchin/tall child playing dress-up! The thread has made it click for me that clean lines look infinitely better on me.

Long, slow wardrobe update incoming....

I'm 5 11 with big boobs, blobby stomach and very long thin legs. Think lollipop. I love empire style dresses as can't tell how stupidly short my body is. Also love a bootcut and glad they came back in. Pencil denim skirt with a blouse tucked in. Started shopping vintage tops. River island long jeans. Next tall is good.

Definitely clean lines and "classic" styles. Anything oversized makes me look like a marquee (not just a tent!) so I try and stick to tailored / slim fitting silhouettes on top and maybe wide or straight leg trousers. Frills and flounces again add bulk so I try to avoid.

Rachelandmarty · 20/07/2024 06:47

I’m 5’10, size 8, no boobs. I wear a lot of stuff from &otherstories - their stuff fits me really well, occasionally the trousers are a bit short but must be the style as most have been fine. I second what the others say - keep it plain, simple lines - definitely not prairie style!! I look like an emaciated old woman in anything like that! I also look dreadful in short skirts, and dresses often the waist is in the wrong place so tend to go for separates.
it’s much easier than it used to be to get clothes to fit though - I’m nearly 50 and when I was a teen it was so hard to get things long enough, but far easier now. my dd is 16 and 6’1 and she looks amazing, only occasionally finding trousers too short.
Taylor Swift at 5’11 (& looong legs) rocks it in her high heels and always looks incredible - some good outfit inspo from her too, maybe on a slightly lower budget though 🤣

I wear a lot of wide legged trousers - I'm 5ft 8 and have a couple of pairs from Shein which are super long and great with trainers. I wear them with bodies, my length is actually in my body but Tesco have some great bodies in there and are just the right size. I bought one and went back for 3 more in different colours!

Towelmode · 20/07/2024 08:53

I like being tall (only 5ft 9 though) & think it makes dressing easier! I have a short body so have to be careful with proportions.

I think it’s easier to pull off the oversized dresses if you are slim & tall but maybe you look too slim and lost in them if that makes sense. I’m a bit fat now but wear a lot of Cos. Clean lines, basic shapes etc.
