If you are tall, what is your 'look'?

By tall, I mean over 5ft 8....

Really struggling with my style post babies. I am very slim, size 8-10, but still have a bit of a flabby stomach and small (deflated boobs). I'm 37. I would probably be described as lanky by some and am very pale.

Recently hate all my clothes and how they look on me. Also feel like I've grown out of some of the 'looks' I used to like. I feel like my height (5ft 11) is a bit of barrier to looking good. In the oversized stuff which is trendy - or the Toast looks - I just look like an enormous tent pole in a tent. Equally more fussy/feminine stuff - see Sezane - can make me look a little odd. I used to love a lot of whistles stuff but now it seems to be overpriced polyester and is also usually too short.

Any tall women got any tips, preferred shops, preferred style inspiration?

The only thing I really struggle with is the length of shorter dresses.

JustASquareMoreChocolate · 20/07/2024 08:59

Am 5’11 and a size 12 and long simple lines are great. I wear a lot of Baukjen. Stuff from the USA and Nordic countries tend to fit well, as people a little taller, so I have stuff from brands like Eileen Fisher and boutiques that sell Nordic stuff. Other brands that work are Toast (sorry) plus companies made for sporty people like Finesterre. I am wearing a lot of Finesterre shorts and Toast t shirts at the moment on the casual side, and my favourite work thing at the moment is Baukjen black linen shirt with black trousers. I also love maxi dresses but can be tricky to find.

I’m 5’8” and lanky. Long thin arms and boyish figure. I can’t wear anything fussy - puff sleeves, gathers, oversized (only jackets look good). Floaty dresses make my arms look like sticks and I feel look weird.

I look good in bodycon below the knee stretch skirts, straight bodycon dresses, vest tops. I’ve found as I have wide shoulders, drop shoulder tops & jackets look better on me. Also raglan sleeves. I can wear wide jeans but only if they are fitted on the hips and with a raglan sleeve top tucked in. Vest tops and bodycon skirts are my summer go to. In the winter skinny jeans. I wear oversized jackets as it tones down the bodycon dresses & skirts. Bodycon doesn’t have to be tight - just straight cut.

NewMe2024 · 20/07/2024 09:07

I’m the same height as you but a size 14 so not slim like you are. It depends on your lifestyle, but if I were thinner I would wear slim cut 7/8 length trousers like my life depended on it. I’d team them with great shoes, blazers, and coats. I’d also get some high quality slim cut jeans and leather trousers.

Basically, don’t drown yourself in baggy clothes. Play to your strengths.

'Does my Bum look 40' is Kat Farmer on Instagram.
She is tall and slim and always looks good.

albalass · 20/07/2024 12:42

I'm not tall but I've been admiring the many different outfits that 'Brickmaster Amy' wears on Lego Masters USA. She's over 6 foot and I think she looks fabulous.

CocoDolphin · 20/07/2024 15:35

Have you seen Kat Farmer lately @notatinydancer 😳she used to look good, but I had to unfollow her recently as her overall look and content has taken a real nosedive. I certainly wouldn’t be looking to her for style advice nowadays! A shame because I rather liked her dresses and jackets phase.

gardeningdayz · 20/07/2024 17:52

I'm also 5 foot 11. I used to buy trousers from Long Tall Sally. They were taken over by another company and it's a bit hit and miss but some of the jeans are OK.

There is a Long Tall Sally buy and sell Facebook page if you don't mind buying second hand. I have old company LTS trousers and jeans that have lasted about 10 years

Next long is just about long enough but the tall size is too long for me. I have a 34 inch inside leg measurement.

At our height we can maxi skirts/maxi dresses look good.

If you are on Instagram there are quite a few tall women "influencers" who can give you ideas for clothes and styling etc

Omelettey · 20/07/2024 21:18

I relate to your post OP!

6’0
Size 10
Medium sized boobs (babies deflated them)
Broad shoulders
Sticks for arms

I’ve always loved fashion but have also felt a bit lost post kids. I feel the same as you in that I don’t seem to suit anything especially frilly or girly - it looks lovely on others but somehow silly on me with my limbs hanging out. I think a girlie-ish white blouse can be nice dressed down with looser light denim jeans, so that’s my exception.

I try and stick to simpler items, and wear a lot of neutral colours - white, cream, beige, khaki, denim blue, navy, black. I hate pattern or anything jazzy, maybe subconsciously because I already stand out a lot! I quite like oversized stuff but it has to be balanced for me, eg. I’m loving balloon trousers (Free People, Me&Em, Citizens of Humanity) with a more fitted top, or a looser shirt (Cos) with slimmer trousers. I think the balloon leg look better on me than wide-leg. Controversially, I quite like dungarees (Toast, but got off Vinted) and a vest for hot days with the kids. Or a plain maxi dress or jumpsuit, usually from H&M or Cos. If Cos closes down I will have nothing to wear.

I still like her , but I'm no fashion expert 😂

WannabeHealthier · 21/07/2024 01:18

Yes @CocoDolphin and @notatinydancer Kat Farmer looks worryingly unwell, it’s really sad to see. The posts from a recent holiday reveal her ribs- they are protruding from her body in a way that would suggest serious physical illness or an eating disorder. The fact she is wearing such revealing clothing suggests she wants us to see the extreme weight loss. I hope she has someone close looking out for her.

(I don’t follow her, used to…but she pops up on my IG feed)

LifeZ · 21/07/2024 01:31

I shrub from 5'9.5 to just 5'8 following an accident but am laughably never without my high heels which make me look much taller. I like single colour or at least single colour to and different colour bottoms as a whole with a few exceptions.
Wise trousers which suit just in the hood not higher can be nice depending on your actual proportions. I always wear a bra with a bit of form in it to balance me out. I like dresses or clothes in general that have fitted top halves for sure to avoid the tent look and ate generally more tailored or close and structured although abetter quality stretch top is nice. A long as it's not stretched to capacity. How do one length dressed look, are they something you'd wear, I'm sure they'd look lovely with long legs?
Farm rio have some longer dresses but they are colourful which, if you are very pale you probably won't like.
A shade of navy( find yours) is good for everyone and everyone has their shade of pink and pale blue and white, but it might be creamy rather than bright white. I don't know what you'd go for.

Barleysugar86 · 21/07/2024 01:35

For summer I love an empire line dress (small boobed and 5ft 9). It's what I feel most elegant in.

Gingerwarthog · 21/07/2024 07:35

I am at the smaller end of your range at 174cm but most of that is leg. I am very short waisted with giraffe legs and broad swimmers' shoulders. Smallish chest. I also have long arms. Size 10 but can be 12 on top if buttons or stiffer fabric is involved (shoulders again).

Anything with frills or fuss (ruffles, lots of pattern) looks like I'm playing dress up and I have to be careful re skirt length. Sleeves can be very problematic and I either go for completely sleeveless or full sleeve. Half or cap sleeves look wrong and can make my arms look like hams.

My SIL is 6'1 and says everything she wears has to be well fitted and tailored or she looks bigger/ wider than she actually is. She won't wear anything baggy or loose.

I wear clean lines, block colours and try to stick to two colours max in an outfit. Tailored clothes suit me best - short jackets and cropped trousers are a good look (Robell is a good brand for slim, long legged women). Scandinavian or German brands also seem to cut for our shape and height eg Gerry Weber and Part Two. Navy and cream is a great combo.

foreverbasil · 21/07/2024 09:20

Can I jump on this thread and ask where you all buy jeans? I'm out of love with M&S Siennas which were always my go to. They seem to have increased the stretch in the fabric and it doesn't wear well. I'd love some classic jeans. I'm with the group that doesn't look good in a wide leg...just so much fabric. Thanks

Gingerwarthog · 21/07/2024 11:32

Arket or Part Two for jeans

StuckintheUSA · 21/07/2024 12:52

I think it depends on your body shape, not just your height. I'm an inverted triangle (5 ft 9) and like wearing knee-length shirt dresses. They just really suit my shape. In the winter, my wardrobe is very boring - jeans and v-neck jumpers. But nothing else really seems to suit me. I have a large chest for my size (8), so can't wear short, wide tops, as they make me look enormous.

Recently, I bought some clothes in Zara and Cos. I'm not normally a fan of Cos, as I find their clothes too boxy, but they did have a really lovely shirt and I bought a dress which was my exact colour (teal). I really noticed the difference in quality between Cos and other High St. brands. I tried some linen trousers on in H&M the other day, and they were like tissue paper.

LondonFox · 21/07/2024 13:05

If you want you can l9ok up Kibble body types.
You sound luke pure dramatic.
So structured, sharp siloueth, no frills and bows etc.

DelurkingAJ · 21/07/2024 13:11

5’10” and my recent jeans have come from FatFace (although their long length does seem to vary, which is frustrating). Very good value in the sale!
