What do people wear to the office when it's hot?

I normally wear dresses and opaque tights, or trousers and a top most of the year, but in summer I feel daft. I can't wear bear legs though, and although a linen suit sounds great, in reality I'm a crumpled mess. I cycle to work and need to take my clothes with me, which doesn't help. Not looking to be really stylish here, just comfortable and smart.

For me (civil service) it's M&S wide trousers with a silky top, midi pleated skirt with breton top or a floral skater dress with ¾ leggings. Mix'n'match, then it all goes in the wash on a Saturday and repeat next week.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/07/2024 19:04

Dress and sandals usually - civil service

User135644 · 13/07/2024 19:05

Nothing

Magnificentkitteh · 13/07/2024 19:07

Cheers. I'm civil service too. Is a skater dress short? And do you wear sandals? I just find the bare (not bear but may as well be!) thing hard to pull off. My legs are horrible though.

How cold is the air con in your office? Our place is like a fridge so I wear warm stuff all year round

bergamotorange · 13/07/2024 19:11

Linen trousers or a long skirt and a short sleeve top.

FluentRubyDog · 13/07/2024 19:11

It's short (tigh length), but I get away with leggings underneath. I stay away from sandals, Clarks flats are my go-to. I'm a bit shameless about my legs, as my calves are my one good point.

How do you pull off linen trousers and avoid looking like a crumpled piece of paper by lunchtime? Genuine question, I'd love to master that trick.

Our office is OK, can't say temperature ever gave me reason to complain.

I think I am just someone who is untroubled about being mildly crumpled? Also a lot of linen is now actually linen blend and that doesn't seem to crumple much.

I think lighter linen looks more crumpled than darker shades.

Not very cold. Is not really proper air con at all. Some sort of "cooling system" but is stuffy. Obviously this year has not been particularly hot but I have this dilemma every year and getting older and at the same time more senior so would love to crack a better office look!

Massive floaty Palazzo pants and pleated maxi skirts are my best friends in the summer. My office is very casual so I can get away with just wearing them with a vest and trainers or sandals, but they can be snazzed up a bit with nice light blouses.

Oblomov24 · 13/07/2024 19:24

Dress and sandals, bare legs. Or skirt and top, sandals, bare legs.

rainbowbee · 13/07/2024 19:45

Civil service. Linen shirt, plain cotton trousers and espadrilles. I don't like toes in the office but other women wear sandals.

ThePoetsWife · 13/07/2024 19:48

Dresses or wide leg trousers

OooPourUsACupLove · 13/07/2024 20:14

Satin midi/maxi skirt, cotton knit top, bare legs and loafers (chub rub shorts underneath the skirt.

I also cycle in. I roll the skirt and top together to go in my bag. The skirt gets a bit creased but it drops out quickly.

rockstarshoes · 13/07/2024 21:23

Civil service too Maxi dresses & sandals! Sometimes trainers if it's wet or cowboy boots!

Maxi skirt &! Top. As above.

Wide leg trousers sandals & a T shirt!

I do sometimes wear a shorter dress with footless tights & a block heel, my legs aren't a bad shape but they are old & I have a chunk of leg missing from a freak accident!

Air con? lol lol I wish!

CassandraWebb · 13/07/2024 21:26

Sleeveless blouse, linen blend trousers, and sandals

Or a knee length dress

And have plenty of water, don't try and rush about too much.

I hate it when it is too hot, the heat makes my symptoms flare up so I really struggle.

But I struggle if I am too cold too Grin

BigFatSober · 13/07/2024 21:35

So far I honestly haven't needed to give this much thought as it has not been hot enough!

However, I normally do go for dresses when it's really hot. I don't have air con in my office, so needs must! I'm not a dress sort of person generally though and never a short dress as I don't like showing too much leg either.

StarlightLady · 14/07/2024 08:45

Short sleeved summer dresses with smart sandals.

OMGsamesame · 14/07/2024 08:52

What's wrong with your legs?

I would go bare-legged with a hemline on the knee or below

justasking111 · 14/07/2024 08:58

Midaxi dresses are in the yay. I've shortened a lot of maxis previously. Bare legs, flat footwear usually ballerina style. Desk fan, iced water.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/07/2024 08:58

Tidy dresses - Seasalt, White Stuff, Boden, John Lewis - an awful lot of navy - or navy ankle grazers with a drapey top with loafers. The Whistles slimline Jersey jacket (in many colours) or a tidy cardigan. I wear sandals or flats, Birkie knock.offs if it's v hot, and have a pair of dressier black pointy ballerinas under my desk for emergencies.

V relaxed public sector environment with no air con! I'm pretty senior. It helps that I can drive to work.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 14/07/2024 09:02

I just wear normal work pants (Uniqlo wide leg or tapered ankle length) all year round and adjust the weight of the top to suit the weather. On a hot day (it's regularly 30-40 in summer where I live) I'd wear a sleeveless blouse or plain black or white tshirt. Normally with leather or suede casual sneakers.

It's not hot enough in the office or on the early morning commute for me to have to wear summery dresses, linen pants or sandals and I'd feel weirdly unprofessional in those things anyway.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/07/2024 09:09

Sheer tights in nude if you don't want bare legs.

Closed toe sandals and a lightweight dress, or a suit (not linen) or separates, with a silk blouse, if not silk a lightweight loose cotton with no sleeves or short loose sleeves.

This was my plan when I had a stricter work dress code

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/07/2024 09:10

Obviously depends on your workplace but shorts and flip flops seem to be the norm at mine currently

I wear a dress and sandals
