What do people wear to the office when it's hot?

I normally wear dresses and opaque tights, or trousers and a top most of the year, but in summer I feel daft. I can't wear bear legs though, and although a linen suit sounds great, in reality I'm a crumpled mess. I cycle to work and need to take my clothes with me, which doesn't help. Not looking to be really stylish here, just comfortable and smart.

Midi/midaxi dresses or skirts make bare legs easier to carry off.

I think I am just someone who is untroubled about being mildly crumpled? Also a lot of linen is now actually linen blend and that doesn't seem to crumple much.

I think lighter linen looks more crumpled than darker shades.

Edited

Agree. Dark linen trousers (blue, black or brown is my summer work uniform. I do iron them though, I know lots of people don't iron but if you iron while they are still damp its quite quick.

When it is really hot, people stop caring what they look like, or the state of their legs, and it just becomes about survival.

That might be crumply linen, might be big dress and sandals, but there is an atmosphere of just get through the day.

ForGreyKoala · 14/07/2024 09:25

Either a dress, or a skirt and light top, often in linen, with sandals and bare legs. I don't care how crumpled the linen looks - isn't that the point of linen?

ThatBusyFox · 14/07/2024 10:23

Long skirts are your friend! I've bought a couple this year and live in them. I don't actually mind my legs but love being able to throw them on when I haven't shaved.

Much cooler and less sweaty than trousers of any kind

Stressybetty · 14/07/2024 10:27

CS too but office isn't that warm just a bit stuffy. Have CFS and cant bear being cold. Very casual workplace apart from seniors. Tend to live in jeans and hoodies. Summer probably 3/4 length jeans or cotton trousers, t shirts with cardigan or full zip hoodie over.

Magnificentkitteh · 14/07/2024 10:32

Thanks all. I think maxi or midaxi dresses with some kind of smart sandals (possibly not open toe?) is the way to go. I do need to find some that fit properly though, and don't show your bra straps. I ordered a few from Tu actually but none fit properly so I sent them all back. Bought a sleeveless linen dress instead which is nice and I wear it at the weekends but isn't actually very smart and not really long enough to fit the bill

Would never get my legs out at work, partly as they are horrid but also because I never feel the need, heat wise. In summer I switch to light weight chino trousers. You can make them a bit smarter by folding them under not out. I love to wear with sandals but this summer have barely had sandals on so it does leave me a bit of a shoe quandary. I'm thinking of just going into trainers like most people already have.

Meadowfinch · 14/07/2024 10:39

I'm tall so I wear linen dresses - if you buy good quality heavy linen, it doesn't crease and is still cool - or cotton. Mostly calf length, fit and flare styles, so I don't have to worry about legs on show.

Or a long cotton skirt or wide legged cotton trousers, and a fitted top.
Generally with flat sandals or low block heels.

It’s so long since we had a spell of hot with in this country that I have forgotten what I used to wear.

PangolinPan · 14/07/2024 10:48

Have a look at Uniqlo for dresses and tops, they have some great linen at the moment, darker colours look better than light when creased.

I have a work silhouette which I am trying to retain as it gets warmer (shirt with a collar, skirt or trousers). At the moment I'm wearing chinos with a Uniqlo linen blouse. I will only go to dresses when it's boiling but that's looking unlikely now.
.I wear Toms leather closed toe shoes.

MOJ - dresses and sandals or midi skirts , tops and sandals , I tend to make sure dresses are at least knee length, but I work in an environment with sex offenders. Out dress code is smart casual, shorts allowed but only tailored and to the knee, no sports/denim shorts, rubber flip flops etc we also have no stroppy tops/dresses and nothing too short or low cut but that's more about the type of offenders. I have a few t-shirt shape tops from love and roses at next bit smarter than just a t-shirt but cool and comfortable

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 14/07/2024 10:57

Like this, they also work with cropped trousers or loose trousers

Spray starch prevents linen creasing to quickly. Also makes T-Shirts look better. Spray on inside when ironing.

Haven't tried spray that removes creases.

RampantIvy · 14/07/2024 14:57

I think I have worn a summer dress once so far this year. I wore ballet pumps and a cardigan with it as our aircon is ridiculously cold. I always have a jumper or cardigan on in the office, then when I go outside into nice warm weather I take it off.

I usually wear trousers, and as it has been so cold I have been wearing socks and leather trainers. Our heating is thermostatically controlled at home and has been coming on the last few mornings as it has been so cold.

FairviewRosie24 · 14/07/2024 21:00

Denim shorts and vest or T-shirt + converse. I’m an IT tech though so expected to look like a scruff lol 😀😀

I have a selection of seasalt dresses which are handy for traveling too. Smart enough but not too corporate

reallytimetodeclutter · 14/07/2024 21:39

I think the fabrics are key. I wear cotton or silk shirts, and cotton mix trousers - nothing too tight/fitted. As for shoes, I think smart-ish comfy sandals like Birks are fine in a lot of offices. But you can get woven flats that cover your toes but are breathable if you don't want your feet "out".

sentfrmmyiphone · 14/07/2024 21:44

The same as when it's not hot! My uniform
